Traces of Time . . . August 7-13, 2023

 TRACES OF TIME . . .

"Time moves slowly, but passes quickly."
“The Color Purple” by Alice Walker, 1982

{Last week: Scroll to end and click "Older Posts" at bottom right.} On this blog I share with family and friends my daily thoughts, doings, what interests me, and--at times--tributes to my eternal sweetheart, Walt, who graduated to heaven on 8-21-2020.

Dedicated to our seven children--Janie, Gary, Steve, David, Julie, Brian, Jen, their spouses, our 39 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and posterity to come.

  Lunch Bunch was going to

be at

   Black Bear Diner

in American Fork...

as we were going in, the

family parked next to us

said the food was good,

but the service was very, very slow.

We went in and when we told the gal

we had 14 in our group, she said

"We only have one server."

Jeanie said: "Let's go to Jim's."

So we went to Jim's instead.

Our fun, no-nonsense

waitress, Michelle, had

our food orders taken and

served lickety-split.

A lot got "Jim's breakfast"

Eggs, hashbrowns, ham,

bacon or sausage (2);

toast, pancakes, or

biscuits 'n gravy.

Some got Denver or

other omelette, or

Philly Cheese Steak sandwich.

Fourteen came today...

Clockwise from bottom left:

Linda H, Nadine, Faye,

Jeanie, Kaye, MaryAnn,

Tori, Tammy, Linda B,

SuzAnne, Shauna, Carol,

Sue, Eileen.

We always miss those

who can't come.

 Our Wednesday night movie

for a movie was

from 1953

"Roman Holiday"

Gregory Peck - age 37

Audrey Hepburn - age 24

Roman Holiday was not Hepburn's first acting role, as she had appeared in Dutch and British films from 1948 and on stage, but it was her first major film role and her first appearance in an American film. Wyler wanted an "anti-Italian" actress who was different from the curvy Italian stars of that era:
 "She was perfect..." .

Peck's contract gave him solo star billing, with newcomer Hepburn listed much less prominently in the credits. Halfway through the filming, Peck suggested to Wyler that he elevate her to equal billing—an almost unheard-of gesture in Hollywood.

Originally, the film was to have had only Gregory Peck's name above its title, with "Introducing Audrey Hepburn" beneath in smaller font. Peck suggested Wyler elevate her to equal billing so her name appears before the title, and in type as large as his: "You've got to change that because she'll be a big star, and I'll look like a big jerk."

Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn star as Joe Bradley and Princess Ann

Wyler first offered the role to Hollywood favorite Cary Grant. Grant declined,[8] believing he was too old to

 "Harvey"

"The Parent Trap - 1"

"The Parent Trap - 2"

The Barbie Movie"

We thought the first half was weird.

Then the second half redeemed it.

Both women and men

are of worth!!

Ruth Mosko Handler

{1919-2002]

is the lady who created Barbie

in 1959.

Barbie's "birth date" is

officially listed as March 9, 1959.

Handler developed colon cancer in her 80s. She died on April 27, 2002, at the age of 85. Handler was survived by her husband, who died on July 21, 2011.

Legacy

Handler created one of the world's most successful toy companies, Mattel. Her Barbie doll is one of the most popular and iconic toys in the world. In 2016, the Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris had a Barbie show featuring hundreds of dolls alongside artworks inspired by Barbie.

While some people thought that a scene with an old woman sitting on the bench was Barbara Handler, it was not her. Barbara does not appear (in real form) in the movie. That's actually Oscar-winning costume designer Ann Roth that you're seeing in that scene.

Ann Bishop Roth (born October 30, 1931 --age 91) is an American costume designer. She has designed the costumes of various prominent films, and has been nominated five times for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, winning twice for The English Patient (1996) and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom (2020). In the 2023 movie Barbie, Roth shares a "pivotal"[2] scene with Barbie (portrayed by Margot Robbie).

Gary drove me to Burley today

to see my dear friend, Kenna.

She was hospitalized ten days

ago after falling which caused

a hair-line fracture in her pelvis.

a gash on the top left of her

scalp, and other  bruises.

She is in rehab at Parkview.

When we would infer we should go,

Kenna quickly said: "Oh, please

don't go yet."

After the nurse gave her some

medicine and Kenna got drowsy,

she said: "I don't want to go

to sleep because then you

will leave."

We were there an hour and a half.

We then went to see

Tom & Irene Blayney.

Mary Francis was so

surprised to see us.

She said her Dad was

just back from

Ilene Mai's funeral.

Joe Sagers was one

of the speakers.

I asked Tom if they would be

riding in a wagon as the

Grand Marshall's of the

Fair Parade next Wednesday.

He said Irene wasn't able to get

up and he wasn't going to

be in the parade without her.

Mary Francis said she and her

sister Jane would be representing

their Dad and Mom and

had photographs enlarged

of them that would be on display.

"We're practicing 'waving'," she added.

When we went in to see

the bedridden Irene, she

tried to say something to me,

but I couldn't hear her.

When Gary went over to

her bedside, he could tell

she whispered faintly:

"Thank you for coming."

She has had Parkinson's

for several years.

We then got a photo of

"our house" next door

to the Blayney's.

It looks different without

the shutters.

Ross & Karen Taylor's home...

They moved to Burley in 1968

and built their home

within a year.

They moved to Riverton, Utah

in 2004 after 36 years in Burley.

Guess where we went then...

Lunch at DQ...

Drove down the road...

to see the progress of...

the Burley Idaho Temple...

Good thing Gary remembered

we needed gas before the

last gas station until Snowville.

Blue skies all the way...

Always a moment of silence

for the barn...exactly 100 miles

from Burley.

Home again, home again,

jiggity, jig!

3 1/2 hours up, 3 1/2 hours there,

3 1/2 hours back

No regular meetings today in

Saratoga Springs 3rd Ward

The Answer Is Always Jesus Christ

By President Russell M. Nelson

President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

April 2023

“Jesus Christ is the reason we build temples. Each is His holy house. Making covenants and receiving essential ordinances in the temple, as well as seeking to draw closer to Him there, will bless your life in ways no other kind of worship can. For this reason, we are doing all within our power to make the blessings of the temple more accessible . . . . around the world.”

(Currently there are 315 Temples dedicated and operating, announced, or under construction)

August 13, 2023
At the conclusion of the open house, the Saratoga Springs Utah Temple will be dedicated in two sessions (10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. MDT) on Sunday, August 13, 2023, by President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency. The dedication will be broadcast to congregations throughout the area.Apr 10, 2023

DEDICATION OF THE

SARATOGA SPRINGS TEMPLE

I went to both the morning and

afternoon  sessions of the dedication.

It was very peaceful to arrive an hour

early for the ten o'clock session

to not be rushed, to read scripture,

and just soak in the Spirit of the

sacred occasion.

I was blessed to sit by these

dear sisters from our ward.

Barbara, Sandy, and Heather.

Wish I'd been quick enough to

think to take a photo.

Here's the latest photo

** *I am so thankful for The Plan of Salvation and the Atonement of  Jesus Christ that makes this Great Plan operational.
At the end of this August13th,

I pray you have had a

restful , peaceful, and spiritual

Sabbath Day...

I share these truths as my testimony to you...

Heavenly Father lives and knows us each by name. He loves us and wants us to return to Him and Heavenly Mother when we leave this mortal existence.
He loves us just
as we are at this very moment.
He knows what our potential is.

Jesus Christ came to earth as The Only Begotten of the Father and fulfilled the Atonement. He is the Redeemer of all.

I am thankful for the guidance of the Holy Ghost as the third member of the Godhead.
Walt said to me once: "I look forward to thanking the Holy Ghost in person when I get to Heaven. I don't think we give Him enough credit for all He does."

***  *** *** *** ***
Joseph Smith was foreordained to be the Prophet of the Restoration.  He is the Restorer of all things.
*** *** ***
President Russell M. Nelson is the Living Prophet today for all the world.

The Bible is "the Word of God as far as it is translated correctly" and is a Testament of the Divinity of Jesus Christ.
*** *** ***
The Book of Mormon is the Word of God and is Another Testament of Jesus Christ. It is the most correct book of any book on earth.
*** *** ***
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the True Church on the earth today.  Because of the restored Temple Ordinances families can be sealed for eternity.

Of these truths I testify in the Name of Jesus Christ, amen.
