Today Walt worked on taxes and I cooked potatoes and eggs to make potato salad for our FHE tonight at Gortons.

They have been called to the Martin's Cove Mission, leaving May 1st.

They asked us to share a story about a pioneer ancestor coming across the plains.

They also invited us to dress as pioneers or in Western gear.
Roskelleys, Gibbons, Bloxhams, McCalls.
Petersens, Hansens.   Dan Black was in the hospital; Fronks were with their daughter Victoria who surprised them coming early from Kentucky. Ormonds have another committment on the fourth Monday.

Scott took Eileen could be in the photo.
Jacque always sets a beautiful table.
Gortons served delicious bar-b-que spareribs.

Sister The rest brought potato salad
Hansens brought an apple bread pudding.

Each couple shared a story about an ancestor.

We loved hearing each experience.
Dave has a lot of pioneer ancestors.

Ken and Bonnie each had great stories.
George and Jacque have many pioneer stories to learn for their mission at Martin's Cove.

We thank the Gortons for another great family home evening.
We will miss them, but look forward to their return in October.

FRIDAY, MARCH 30, 2018
On Friday mornings we normally do FamilyHistory with Kathleen, but she was unable to come today.  I did do some more work on Byrum Prescott's life story and trying to find out more about his father's being hit by a falling tree and being killed instantly.  This was Feb. 5, 1874 - three months before Byrum was born on May 21, 1874.
(Actually, there are two dates for John's death--the death certificate has a different death date--Feb. 14--than the date of Feb. 5 that is on this tombstone.   So we don't know if the tombstone was put up years later and someone didn't have the accurate death date.  Or if the person filling out the death certificate made a mistake.....  The verifying of all these dates takes a lot of research sometimes.)

Here's a wedding photo of Byrum Heber and Maria Smith Prescott I found on familysearch.org recently.

goodbye, march.
yes, came in like a lion,
going out like a lamb...
We saw friends the Barkes when we went to Stokes to
get a ham for our Easter dinner.
Dixie said: "There will never be a doctor as good
as you were for us, Dr. Petersen!"

We also saw another friend and former patient,
Mary Jane Jolley from Albion.
She said she is living in the home in Albion
where she was born.  She and Lee have sold
most of their land, but have kept 20 acres,
where they raise some cattle and
still have their horses.

Mary Jane was also looking for a ham for
Easter dinner -- a Falls Brand bone in ham.

WE have heard from our new prophet,
his counselors, the apostles, the sevenities, and other leaders...
Today
Here  are just a few highlights from
the Sunday sessions of
General Conference today.

P      President Nelson Gives 13 Challenges
to  To Help Church Members Unlock the Secrets and Mysteries of God
byDanielle B. Wagner | Apr. 01, 2018
During his first talk as prophet speaking to all Church members in general conference, President Russell M. Nelson bore a powerful witness of our Savior, Jesus Christ: "Without our Redeemer’s infinite Atonement, not one of us would have hope of ever returning to our Heavenly Father. Without His Resurrection, death would be the end. Our Savior’s Atonement made eternal life a possibility and immortality a reality for all."
President Nelson told Church members of the sacred experiences he witnessed in the temple when he was sustained as our new prophet, as well as the process he underwent to select his counselors in the First Presidency and our new apostles. President Nelson assured Church members of the care he took interviewing each member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and listening to the Spirit while in the temple. He testified that, "[Jesus Christ] lives. It is He who directs and guides this Church. . . . I am humbly grateful for your sustaining support."
President Nelson shared a little of his life, of his conversion to the Church as a young boy seeking the Lord's will. With a laugh, he told about the moment he wanted to encourage his family to live the Word of Wisdom and "smashed on the concrete floor every bottle of liquor" in his home. This seeking for the Spirit helped President Nelson as he raised his children, pursued his career, struggled with the "almost immobilizing" grief he felt with the passing of his first wife, Dantzel, and in his decision to marry his second wife, Wendy.
Using these personal examples, President Nelson demonstrated "how willing God is to reveal His mind to us," saying he prayed for revelation and to thank the Lord every day of his 34 years as an apostle.
President Nelson then promised Church members that if we will truly seek for the influence and guidance of the Holy Ghost, we will be guided in matters large and small.
"How can we become the men and women, the Christlike servants, the Lord needs us to be?" President Nelson asked. "What will your seeking open for you?" He then gave us these challenges and instructions to better ask of God and seek personal revelation:
1. "Follow the example of the Prophet Joseph."
2. "Find a quiet place where you can regularly go."
3. "Humble yourself before God."
4. "Pour out your heart to your Heavenly Father."
5. "Turn to him for answers and for comfort."
6. "Pray in the name of Jesus Christ about your concerns, your fears, your weaknesses—yes, the very longings of your heart."
7. "And then, listen."
8. "Write the thoughts that come to your mind."
9. "Record your feelings and follow through with actions you are prompted to take."
10. "Repeat this process."
11. "I plead with you to increase your spiritual capacity to receive revelation. Let this Easter Sunday be a defining moment in your life."
12. "Choose to do the work needed to hear the voice of the Spirit more frequently and clearly."
13. "Come unto Christ. Lay hold of every good gift, including the gift of the Holy Ghost."
"I urge you to stretch beyond your current ability to receive personal revelation," President Nelson said. As we repeat and refine this practice "day after day, month after month, year after year," our prophet promised us that we can know the mysteries of God, that which brings eternal life.
"There is so much more that your Heavenly Father wants you to know," President Nelson taught. He then quoted Elder Neal A. Maxwell, saying, "God is giving away the spiritual secrets of the universe, but are we listening?"
Along with these challenges, President Nelson shared how scripture study, temple attendance, expressing gratitude, honoring God's timetable, and accomplishing family history work can increase personal revelation by bringing us closer to God.
"Every blessing the Lord has for you, even miracles will follow," President Nelson promised, assuring members that miracles that attest of God's magnificence and glory still await the Church in the future.

President Nelson announces 7 new temples

P    President Nelson Announces 7 New Temples to Be Built
byMormon Newsroom | Apr. 01, 2018

What a historic conference:
As the final session of the Church’s 188th annual general conference came to a close, Russell M. Nelson, president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, announced plans to build seven new temples. These temples will be in the following locations: Salta, Argentina; Bengaluru, India; Managua Nicaragua; Cagayan de Oro, Philippines; Layton, Utah; Richmond, Virginia; and a major city yet to be determined in Russia.
“We want to bring temples closer to the expanding membership of the Church,” President Nelson said. “My dear brothers and sisters, construction of these temples may not change your life, but your time in the temple surely will. In that spirit, I bless you to identify those things you can set aside so you can spend more time in the temple. I bless you with greater harmony and love in your homes and a deeper desire to care for your eternal family relationships. I bless you with increased faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and a greater ability to follow Him as His true disciples.”
These seven announced temples bring the total number of operating temples (159) and temples announced or under construction (30) to 189 worldwide. There are two temples scheduled for dedication this year, including the Concepción Chile Temple (October 28) and the Barranquilla Colombia Temple (December 9). The Jordan River Utah Temple will be rededicated May 20, and the Houston Texas Temple, which needed interior repairs due to flooding last year, will be rededicated April 22. Nine temples are being renovated, including the Asunción Paraguay Temple, Baton Rouge Louisiana Temple, Frankfurt Germany Temple, Memphis Tennessee Temple, Oakland California Temple, Oklahoma City Oklahoma Temple, Raleigh North Carolina Temple, Tokyo Japan Temple and the Washington D.C. Temple. The Mesa Arizona and Hamilton New Zealand Temples are scheduled for closure this year for renovation. Temples under renovation are considered operating temples.

Our granddaughter, Heidi Fisher Weimer, posted these locations of the 7 new temples on face book this afternoon.
Thanks, Heidi, for this great visual for the new temples.

Here's a map showing where in the world these new temples will be...

We love to see the Brethren greeting each other.  One of these Apostles once told a group of senior missionaries: "There are no other 15 men anywhere who know more what's going on in the world than the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles."   We believe it!

General Conference is a sacred time of teaching and being taught by the Spirit.  Walt nor I have never seen so many changes in any other General Conference during our lifetimes.  We sustain and support our Prophets, Seers, and Revelators as we go forward into a bright future in the Church.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints...

We pray you have had a peaceful and restful
Easter Sabbath Day.
We add our testimonies to those
shared this day in General Conference.

God knows and loves each one of us.
He sent His Beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to the earth to become our Redeemer and Savior through His Infinite Atonement.
"He has risen as He said..." Matthew 28:6
We want to follow the Savior.
Joseph Smith is the Prophet of the Restoration.
In addition to the Bible, the Book of Mormon is Another Testament of Jesus Christ.
Russell M. Nelson is the living Prophet today for every human being on the Earth.
Of this we testify, in the Name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Today we drove to Twin Falls for Walt to have an MRI.
A small, benign cyst was seen on his pancreas.  That is
very good news.

We had lunch at the Sizzler...using the gift card Janice and Jeff gave us at Christmastime.

We Tonight we had a great Burley 3rd Ward
Relief Society Birethday Dinner.

Bonnie Fronk and her committee served delicious salads,
thai chicken dish, rolls, and strawberry short cake.

They also had a fun quiz for which several sisters received
fun prizes for knowing all about the origins of the
longest-standing women' organization in the world--

The Relief Society - organized March 17, 1842

Bishop Steve Gerratt came in at the end
and gave us some pertinent closing remarks.

The sisters sat at the table of their birthday month
for which they had brought an item to decorate that table.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH21, 2018
We went to Andy Wilson's funeral today.  His sons and grandsons were very powerful in sharing Andy's love for the Savior, Jesus Christ, and His Atonement.

Then we drove to Twin Falls and did a 3:00 p.m. session at the temple.  A couple who were visiting here from California took a photo for us (my camera battery was dead). He had grown up in Murtaugh but had not been back for 40 years.
He was delighted to have learned that there was a temple in Twin Falls now.  I told them it had been dedicated in August 2008.

I had not realized that our Twin Falls Temple will have it's 10th anniversary in August of this year.   So we have had four temple presidents in that time: President Rex Gerratt, President Karl Nelson, President Brad Hobbs, and now President Paul Young.  What great blessings we have had to be so close to this beautiful Twin Falls Temple during the past ten years.

After the session we had dinner at Shari's where they serve a free piece of pie on Wednesdays.  Walt chose berry, I chose cherry...(and, yes, I figured it into my daily carbs, etc.)

We got home at 7:30 and had a peaceful evening. Walt and i watched the 1953 movie: "The Last Time I Saw Paris."  We had forgotten it had a tear-gerker ending.  (March has had Elizabeth Taylor as the Star of the Month.)

TODAY WE BOTH HAD

SaturDAY, MARCH24, 2018
A serendipity today was that we got to talk with a
good friend while grocery shopping at Smiths.
Margo Williams was in our ward for several years.
She has been a widow for a while, but still
lives at home here in Burley.
We drove to Oakley this evening to see "Walking Happy."
Wendell Wells was one of the main characters who was over a shoe shop in Salford, an industrial town in Lancashire, England in 1880.
Each part was very well cast.
Several older men were also in the cast and did an excellent job.
Here Alan Nelson is reaching to shake hands
with that little boy.
Of course, anytime John Craner is in anything, he is GREAT!
Gary Jones, on the right, helped get our car parked right out front to make it easier when we came out.
Deborah Jones was the director. Anything Deborah is over is always outstanding!
We were so happy that we could see this fun Oakley Valley Arts Council spring production.  We look forward to "Annie" which will be July 12-28. Then for the fall they are going to do "White Chrismas" November 1-10.

SunDAY, MARCH25, 2018

We went to see Dan Black in the hospital.
His lungs are clear from the pneumonia.
But now there's some problem with his heart.

He introduced us to his intended.
Sarah Elizabeth Hughes came in just as we were ready to leave.
Her son, Sylas, or "Sy" is beside her.  He goes to Mt. Harrison School in Heyburn.

Dan told us he knew he would be criticized for marrying a gal so much younger than he is, but that is his choice.
Sarah is 45, Dan is 81.
We hope Dan will be happy.
He told us they are planning to have the Mayor, Steve Ormond,
perform the marriage as soon as possible when Dan
is out of the hospital.
He said he would even have it performed in the hospital
if they can get their marriage licenses.
