How do these Spring and Summer months
zoom by so quickly?!

Happy Fourth of July

July 7th 125 years since my

Grandfather Huffaker born

July 24th - Happy Pioneer Day

July 25, 2016 - Monday
We were invited to a bar-b-que FHE at the home of Jose and Crystal Herrera, with neighbors and friends in photo below, left to right:
Walt Petersen, Russ Hale, Crystal Herrera with their son, Mindy Hale, Bryce Hale, MaKenna Hale, Byron, Lori, and Madison "Madi" Barrett, Donna Westergard with her daughter Heather, and they are pushing two of the triplets--the two little boys, and the little girl is in a baby pack on Donna's back (whom you can see in the next photo).

Donna and Heather were walking by with the tripletes, Donna's son's children, so we asked them to please be in the photo.  Heather is as beautiful as ever! And a proud aunt of these triplets.  She took this second photo so I could be in it.
Donna was turned so we could see her granddaughter. She is smaller than her brothers.  Eric and Rachel's triplets are Marcus, David, and Katherine.  They have two other children. Donna's other daughter, Diana and her husband have three children. So Donna has 8 grandchildren.
The Russ and Ashley Ludlow Family--Jossilyn, Mason, Logan, and Ethan--were also there but had to leave before I got my camera out of the car.
They get to go on a fun family vacation to Disneyland this week.  We are so excited for them!  We think Disneyland is a wonderful place to be together as a family.
Walt Disney built it to have a clean amusement park to take his children to.  When he was in the planning stages, he asked his friend, Art Linkletter, if he would like to be a partner.
Art said: "Walt, you are crazy, who's ever going to come here to Anneheim where all these orange groves are to go to some amusement park?!"
Art later said: "That was the biggest mistake of my life!"

Jose had to work late and had come just as everyone had left. We went back, after hometeaching, to get our bowl and spoon from the potato salad we took.
We were lucky to get to see Jose.
We became friends with Jose and Crystal when we had the opportunity to teach them temple preparation classes.
We love Jose and Crystal!

Tuesday - July 26, 2016

We get to go see "Calamity Jane" tonight at the Oakley Opera House.

Calamity Jane

DIRECTED BY LIZA KOZIOL

Performance dates are July 14, 15, 16, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23 (2pm Matinee), 25, 26, 28, 29 and 30.

In the wild-west outpost of Deadwood City, 1876, we find the sharpshooting tomboy, CALAMITY JANE surrounded by cowboys, townsfolk, and the famous Wild Bill Hickok. After a mix-up in the talent pool at Deadwood’s saloon-theater, Calam goes to Chicago to import to Deadwood the glamorous actress, Adelaid Adams, but returns by mistake with her maid, Katie Brown instead. Back in Deadwood, Katie’s inability to perform is overcome as she wins the heart of the young Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin, and when Calam sheds her tomboy persona at a ball at the local Fort and becomes a true woman, she realizes that she loves Wild Bill Hickok..
It was wonderful!! So much talent in our Mini-Cassia Area!
Tesha Broderick was a natural Calamity Jane. And Dane Broderick (her husband in real life) did a great portrayal as Wild Bill Hickock.
HannahSarah Cameron was great as Katie Brown, and Nathan Cameron (?her brother) was also great as Lt. Danny Gilmartin.
Here's the three photos we got coming out of the theatre.
Bud Presba made a great Doc Pierce and Peg Presba was crazy as Crazy Indian.
Here is Dane as Wild Bill Hickock.  I tried to get Denny Davis in the photo who always does superior is each production he is in!  Tonight he was the owner of The Golden Garter saloon where most of the action takes place.
Here I got a photo of Denny Davis with Walt.  I think Denny and his wife, Jan Davis, have played a big role in the many years of successful productions at the Howells Opera House!
We admire them so much! We are thankful for them and the many others who have brought such high culture to our valley through these many productions brought to life throughout most of the 50 years that we have lived in Burley, Cassia County, I D A H O!

The only criticism I have of the play tonight is that they didn't give us enough time after the curtain call to give them the STANDING OVATION they all deserved!!
We say thanks to all who have made this part of Southern Idaho the wonderful place to raise our seven children that we feel it has been and continues to be!

Walt opened his General Family Medical Practice in Burley on  July 1, 1966.  This--coincidentally--was the very day that Medicare began.  He retired on January 14, 2005--39 1/2
years later.

And he had been a physician and surgeon at the Public Health Indian Hospital in Talihina, Oklahoma, for two years before we came to Burley.  This fulfilled his military obligation.  Before that he had done his internship at the Minneapolis General Hospital, which changed names in the middle of the year to Hennepin County General Hospital.

When we moved to Burley we were really coming "back home to Idaho" because we both grew up in Wendell, Idaho.  When Walt graduated in 1952, I was just a 7th grader.  How did we get together you ask?  Well, that's a whole other blog post.

Walt and Eileen Petersen - in our 82nd and 77th years.

Our son, Brian, and his four darling daughters are flying in to Salt Lake City tonight from Nashville, Tennessee. They land about midnight. We are so excited to see these granddaughters whom we haven't seen for a long time!  They get to be here four days.
We will go down tomorrow.
The above is what was scheduled to happen.
What actually happened was their flight was delayed so they flew out Wednesday morning.
Wednesday - July 27, 2016

Driving down this morning to Utah to spend the next four days with Brian, Emma, Taylor, Avery, and Lizzy.

We got to Saratoga Springs about 1:00.  Brian and his daughters got there about 2:00.  Happy time!
Cousin time is fun time!
Which photos turned out the best?
Rigdon not sure what to think about his Uncle Brian.

Trying to capture Rigdon's scowl look.
Now I think I got some of the scowl look.
We got  Rigdon's best quizical look in this photo when Emma was holding him.  Soon he was all smiles with his darling cousins, Emma, Taylor, Avery, and Lizzy.
Lizzy getting her crayons ready so she can color something.
She starts first grade next Monday, August 1st in Tennessee!
Then to Smith's Marketplace in American Fork before heading up to American Fork Canyon for a hot dog roasting picnic.
Julie was stressed about finding a good camp site but she found a perfect place!  And the scouts--young and old--got an excellent fire started!!
Of course, Gary always comes prepared for most everything!

As does Brian!
During the ongoing game of tag up the slopes and through the trees, Gary and Brian each took a tumble in the loose rocks.  In their 40's and 50's now, these brothers can still keep up with this grandchildren generation.
The kids had fun exploring around the creek next to our site.
(need Julie's photo or maybe it's Brian's photo of kids at the creek.)

I got a photo of each family together.
Brian, Emma, Taylor, Avery, and Lizzy -- visiting us in Utah from Tennessee.
Gary, Abbey, Jacob, and Isaac now live in Pleasant Grove, Utah.
Julie, Jacee, Jackson, Maddie, and Rigdon.  Oh, I forgot, Rigdon was home with John.  He's a handful in the mountains at age 22 months.  They still live in Saratoga Springs, Utah.
Grampa and I are loving being with our family this week.  And especially with Brian, Emma, Taylor, Avery, and Lizzy whom we haven't seen for a  long time.
We were all tired out when we got back to Julie and John's home in Saratoga Springs where Brian and family are staying. Grampa and I are staying with Gary in Pleasant Grove.

Thursday - July 28, 2016
We will be in Utah with Brian and his four wonderful daughters.  We drove over to Julie and John's home and spent the morning with kids and grandkids.
Julie taught the Tennessee Petersens the fun card game that David and Julie "The Jupiter Petersens" had taught them: "Cover Your Assetts."
Emma was taking an online Harvard class from 10:00-1:00.
The rest had fun learning this new card game.
Lizzy checked out some strategy for the game with her Dad.
It was a fun time for all ages.
After a mac 'n cheese lunch, it was rest time, then off to hike up to the Battle Creek Falls to cool off in the small waterfall.
They needed to cool off on this 100ยบ summer afternoon!
Grampa and I had already decided that this was not a hike for us "senior citizens," as we waved goodbye to them before we drove back to Julie and John's air conditioned home to download our photos and catch our blog up.
They were planning to get 'King Kong" ice cream cones after the hike, then back to Julie and John's for a pizza supper before going shooting with Uncle John in the early evening.
I guess no one got a photo of the King Kong ice cream treats.

6:37 p.m...they're back...to be continued...

After a pizza supper...
Emma doesn't like to have her picture taken, but here's a good one I got of her and Taylor and Lizzy.
John explained to those going shooting some of the precautions and rules... This was the only event we got to have Steve and Natalie come for.  Kimble and Carter are having their Youth Conference at Bear Lake.
Some who were together for the "Shooting Night"...Abbey, Gary, Jacob, Grampa Walt, Steve, Brian, and John.
Here are three of Brian's daughters shooting...

Emma, Taylor, and Avery. (Taylor is on top left and bottom right.)

Friday - July 29, 2016

We will still be in Utah with Brian and his four charming daughters, and with our other wonderful children and grandchildren who live in Utah.

This morning we drove with Brian, Emma, and Taylor to Evanston, Wyoming.  It was fun to hear the girls reminisce about their home town of two years (2009-2011).
First stop was for a photo at their Unita Meadows Elementary School.
Next we had lunch at the Suds. They make their own root beer.
My "ultimate grilled cheese" actually had a little too much cheese!
A photo in front of Suds as we were leaving.
Emma and Taylor started out to hike up the hill behind the house they lived in...
...but half way up there was a "No Trespassing" sign at a new gate, so they didn't venture any further.
Brian posts two photos together. So the bottom is the girls hiking up the hill.  The photo on top is of Emma and Tahylor stganding by their Uinta Meadows Elementary school.

They stopped in to see Dr. Barton--general surgeon in Evanston--and his family.  The Barton's oldest daughter had that very day received her mission call to the Mexico Mexico City East Mission.  That's why Dr. Barton was home in the afternoon.
Brian and family have lived in Tennessee for five years now...and love it there.
However, they have loved being back here in the midst of the mountains. Below is Brian's photo of 2 sets of mountains--one below the other.

When we got back to Saratoga Springs - we divided into three groups - Julie, Rigdon, Maddie, Avery, and I went to "BFG" (Big Friendly Giant) movie which was excellent. So well done!
Emma, Taylor, and Jacee went to "Lights Out," which was scary.

The guys - Walt, Gary, Steve, David, Brian, John, and Jackson went to "Star Trek."
Jackson, age 11 (almost 12), who had not seen any Star Trek before said: "Now I'm obsessed with Star Trek!"
Gary--who's been a "Trekkie" since the TV series in the 70's, said this is his favorite "Star Trek" movie of all.  I think he said there have been 12 Star Trek movies.
Then Julie and I took the girls, Rigdon and Jackson thru the Taco Bell and Wendy's drive thru's and ate back at the house.
Before the guys got back from their Burger Place, Julie took Jackson, Maddie, Avery, and Lizzy to their residential hot springs pool for a quick swim.
When the guys got home, they were elated that each of the five of them had been able to name Dad's top five favorite movies: Fiddler on the Roof, Sergeant York, The Fighting Sullivans, Tora! Tora! Tora!, and Chariot's of Fire.

Fiddler on the Roof - 1964 on Broadway; 1971 Movie.
A lavishly produced and critically acclaimed screen adaptation of the international stage sensation tells the life-affirming story of Tevye (Topol), a poor milkman whose love, pride and faith help him face the oppression of turn-of-the century czarist Russia.
Release dateNovember 3, 1971 (USA)

Walt is still miffed that the Topol didn't get the academy award for best actor that year. (Gene Hackman got it for The French Connection.)
Sergeant York 1941 movie Prize-winning Tennessee marksman Alvin York (Gary Cooper), a recent convert to Christianity, finds himself torn between his non-violent beliefs and his desire to serve his country when recruited to fight in World War I. Kindly Major Buxton (Stanley Ridges) convinces York to engage in battle, where the pacifist's prowess with a rifle earns him honors as he continues to struggle with his decision to kill. Howard Hawks directs this adaptation of the real York's memoirs.
Release dateSeptember 27, 1941 (USA)

The Fighting Sullivans - true story of 5 brothers on same ship in Navy in World War II -- In this dramatization of a true story, five brothers from Iowa grow up in an inseparable family during the Great Depression. When World War II strikes the country, the brothers feel compelled to serve their nation in its time of need. After joining the Navy, the siblings request to serve on the same ship -- a decision that turns out to be devastating for the family when their vessel is attacked at Guadalcanal.
Initial releaseFebruary 3, 1944

Tora! Tora! Tora! 1970 movie This dramatic retelling of the Pearl Harbor attack details everything in the days that led up to that tragic moment in American history. As United States and Japanese relations strain over the U.S. embargo of raw materials, Air Staff Officer Minoru Genda (Tatsuya Mihashi) plans the preemptive strike against the United States. Although American intelligence agencies intercept Japanese communications hinting at the attack, they are unwilling to believe such a strike could ever occur on U.S. soil.

Chariots of Fire - movie 1981 True story of 1924 Olympics in Paris, France. In the class-obsessed and religiously divided United Kingdom of the early 1920s, two determined young runners train for the 1924 Paris Olympics. Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson), a devout Christian born to Scottish missionaries in China, sees running as part of his worship of God's glory and refuses to train or compete on the Sabbath. Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross) overcomes anti-Semitism and class bias, but neglects his beloved sweetheart Sybil (Alice Krige) in his single-minded quest.
Release dateOctober 9, 1981 (USA)

Here's another poster from Chariots of Fire that our family will like because he has the #7 on is shirt.
And here's another poster showing the friends who went to the Olympics together. The two main runners -- Eric Liddel is on the shoulders of the others, and Harold Abrahams is on the far right.
We have watched this movie many times!

Actually, we said good bye to Brian and his daughters tonight because we don't feel we are up to being at Lagoon all day in 100 degree weather tomorrow.
It has been so wonderful to be with Brian, Emma, Taylor, Avery, and Lizzy for these three full days!

We look forward to seeing them again when they come skiing at Park City the day after Christmas--December 26, 2016 to New Year's Day - January 1, 2017!

Saturday - July 30, 2016

A nostalgic day since it's our last day with Brian and his four delightful daughters.  I think the plan for today is to go to Lagoon.
That was the plan but we didn't feel up to being outside all day at Lagoon in 100 degree weather.
So we let the "young ones" -- our children and grandchildren have the day to themselves at Lagoon.

Here's a few photos - hope to add more later.
First photo Brian posted:
In line waiting to ride the Colossus!
Clockwise from lower left: Isaac, Jackson, Taylor, Brian, William, David, Gary, Avery, Sam.
This is about 2:30 in afternoon when Janie and Shawn drove down from Rexburg as a surprise.
Another with Janie and Shawn...
I guess the group photo with everyone didn't turn out.
Here are the families and kids that could come:
Janie & Shawn - Sam and Michael
Gary - Isaac
David & Julie - Joshua, Anna, Sam and William.
Brian - Emma, Taylor, Avery, and Lizzy.
Julie & John - Jacee, Jackson, Maddie, Rigdon.
Total of 23!
As Brian wrote by these two photos he posted together on face book yesterday: "So fun visiting family!"

We got home at 1:15 and were so exhausted that we just hung out at home, had a nap, then used the rest of our gift card for the Upper Crust to have a late lunch/early supper.
Then after we watched The Lawrence Welk Show, we just hung out some more.
Sunday - July 31, 2016

Brian and his four dashing daughters flew back to Tennessee today. What a grand time we will have had with them.
Brian posted on face book a photo of his tired daughters napping when they were in their home in Tennessee.  So we know they got back safely.  We are thankful for no one being seriously injured while they were here and during their travels to and from Utah.

We renewed our baptismal covenants when we partook of the Sacrament this morning.

We had an inspiring lesson #29 in Sunday School with the purpose "to teach us about Alma's cousel for remaining faithful in the Gospel and to help parents understand how to teach and counsel both righteous and unrighteous children."

It was the fifth Sunday, so we had a combined Priesthood/Relief Society time taught by our first counelor, Eric Pierce.

He took his topic from two General Conference talks: Elder Boyd K. Packer from the October 1991 Conference on "Reverence Invites Revelation" and from the April 2009 Conference talk by Margaret S. Lifferth, First Counselor in the Primary General Presidency entitled "Respect and Reverence."

What stood out to me was this paragraph from Elder Packer's talk:
“When we return for Sunday meetings, the music, dress, and conduct should be appropriate for worship. Foyers are built into our chapels to allow for the greeting and chatter that are typical of people who love one another. However, when we step into the chapel, we must!—each of us must—watch ourselves lest we be guilty of intruding when someone is struggling to feel delicate spiritual communications.”
--“Reverence Invites Revelation,” Boyd K. Packer,
General Conference, October 1991

Brother Pierce did a great job of teaching and imploring each of us to be more reverent.  He invited discussion from the members and many great comments were made. One I especially liked was Christine Kemp quoting the first two lines of this primary song:
      Rev'rence is Love
Rev'rence is more than just quietly sitting:
It's thinking of Father above,
A feeling I get when I think of his blessings.
I'm rev'rent, for rev'rence is love.

When I'm rev'rent, it shows in my words and my deeds.
The pathway to follow is clear.
And when I am rev'rent, I know in my heart
Heav'nly Father and Jesus are near.

Words and music: Maggie Olauson, b. 1949

I have been guilty of talking to friends in the chapel, even after the prelude music has begun.  Sometimes I talk with my visiting teaching companion--LaRae Crane--to set up the time we are going visiting teaching for the month.

I need to repent today and not intrude "when someone is struggling to feel delicate spiritual communications.”

I need to also seek more 'to feel delicate spiritual communications' in the chapel and only talk to others in the foyer. I am thankful to Brother Pierce for the wake-up call today in the fifth-Sunday message he shared with us.

We pray you have had a restful and a peaceful Sabbath Day.

Walt and I are thankful for the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ.
We know that God lives, loves us and knows our names, the names of our children, our grandcildren, our great-grandchildren, and everyone's names.
We know that Jesus Christ is our Redeemer and Savior.
We know that Joseph Smith is the Prophet of the Restoration.
We know that President Thomas S. Monson is the living Prophet for the entire world today.
We know that the Bible is true as far as it is translated correctly.
We know that the Book of Mormon is true and is Another Testament of Jesus Christ.
We know that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true Church on the earth today.

Of this we testify on this Sabbath Day - July 31, 2016.
