Elden Leigh Wood

BURLEY – Just before noon on Monday, April 27, 2020, Elden Leigh Wood, age 94, passed away peacefully in his home in Burley, Idaho. He was blessed to be surrounded by his eternal companion Picola, his three oldest daughters, a son-in-law, and caring nurses at the time of his passing.

The family would like to express our deepest appreciation to each of the hospice workers and nurses from Minidoka Home Health & Hospice whose expert, gentle, and loving care always brought an added measure of relief, comfort, and much-needed reassurance to Elden and his family.

Elden Leigh Wood was born on July 18, 1925, in Kimberly, Idaho, the sixth of seven children born to Roy Wood and Stella Permelia Sudweeks. Roy served as Elden’s bishop for 15 of his growing up years. From his father, Elden learned to work hard on their 160-acre farm, and from his mother he developed a loving, gentle, and poetic heart.

Elden served in the Army of Occupation as Combat Engineer Staff Sergeant in Seoul, Korea, and Okinawa, serving from March 1945 to January 1947. Following his military service, he attended Brigham Young University where he studied music and French. He sang the leading role of Faust in the opera Faust, Canio in the Opera Pagliacci, Bastien in the opera Bastien et Bastienne, and Don Jose in the opera Carmen. It was during an opera workshop rehearsal for the opera Carmen that Elden first met and eventually married the beautiful Picola Grant Hatch on June 6, 1949, in the Salt Lake Temple. At the time of his passing, Elden and Picola had been married for nearly 71 years.

From 1966 until his retirement in 1990 from the Cassia County School District, among other things, Elden was the choral director of the famed Burley High School Bel Canto choir. He and Picola also owned the Wood Music Store in Burley for many years which began a legacy of music and teaching throughout the community.

In 1983, Elden received the very prestigious Idaho Music Educator of the Year Award. He served as bishop of the Burley 7th Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Burley West Stake from 1982-1987. Each Christmas Eve, Bishop Wood drove past every home in his ward and tried to think about the dear people who lived there and what he could do to help them. It was like a father tucking his children in bed at night. He loved his ward members and they felt it.

In addition to serving seven full-time missions for the church, one as the president of the West Indies Mission, both he and Picola served in the Boise Idaho and Twin Idaho Temples 12 years, for a combined total of 28 years of service to the Lord all across the globe.

Elden is survived by his beloved wife, Picola Grant Hatch Wood; their six children, Alan Roy Wood of Tooele, Utah, Ann Leigh Harper (Teague) of Burley, Janine Green of Provo, Utah, Renee Packer (Stephen) of Syracuse, Utah, Claire Lynne Prigmore (Steve) of Syracuse, Utah, and Lucie Grant Gibbons (Barry) of Bountiful, Utah; 43 grandchildren; 147 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren, with a total posterity of 244. Elden was preceded in death by his parents; each of his siblings; and recently a grandson, Seth Teague Harper, who passed away on January 3, 2020.

Sometimes a man comes into this world with such innate purity, steadfast integrity, and unwavering devotion for God and all mankind that the world is made infinitely better because of him. And when that man is at last called home, those left behind cannot help but be better for having been touched by his Christlike goodness.

The lives made better by Elden and his beloved eternal companion, Picola, are incalculable. He has now returned home and is rejoicing with dear loved ones who have gone before to await that glorious day when “this mortal must put on immortality” (1 Corinthians 15:53), when all things shall be made whole again through the grace of Christ Jesus. As with Paul speaking to Timothy, he can also say, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). Elden can now enjoy all that God has in store for those who love Him and keep His commandments.

From one of his favorite poems by Robert Frost, The Road Not Taken:

"Two roads diverged in a wood and I—
I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference."

Your life, Elden, has made all the difference.

A private family viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until noon, Monday, May 4, at Rasmussen-Wilson Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley.

A private graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 4, at Gem Memorial Gardens, 2435 Overland Ave., in Burley.

All services will be held in accordance with state-mandated social distancing practices.

nice day outside.
Jacee is getting ready to trim
Christian's hair into a "bowl cut."
This is the 7th week since Institute 
was cancelled on March 17.
But only the 6th lesson missed 
because of Spring Break.
The lesson scheduled for today
was Saints,  Chapter 44.
"The Martyrdom of Joseph
and Hyrum Smith."
Camie would have taught.
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 29, 2020
Family is Everything... 
Wednesday ...just hangin' out in
the Walt and Eileen Family Reunion
"WEPR" shirt that
Brian and Jennifer brought to
Grampa from Tennessee..
"WEPR" is the acronym the
kids have named our family reunion.
Riggy asked Maddie to give him
a streak of purple hair. The only
catch is that he forgot to ask
his mother if it was okay.
Wednesday is 
Movie Night with Gary.
Tonight we are watching 
a favorite movie of Eileen.
"Calamity Jane" from 1954.
Actually, most any Doris Day 
movie is a favorite of mine.
 Gary took a selfie of him while he
watched the movie at his home...
Maddie came and took our photo
since Gary is not joining us for
one more week.
Next week we get to resume having
Gary come to our cozy cottage to
watch the movie with us.
Hip! Hip! Horray!!!

The CNA came... 
Looks like another nice day...
We waited from 1:05 to 1:37 for
the fly over by the F35A
Demonstration jets from...
...Hill Air Force Base, but they
didn't fly over Saratoga Springs
for us to see them...
Julie came to tell us goodbye at
3:30 before she headed to Burley
for the semi-annual gathering of
some of her Blueberry gals. 
 There she pulls out for Idaho...
Karen checked on Walt today...
blood pressure 120/74 is good,
but pvc's have returned after
none on Monday's check.
Walt asked Karen about a mask,
so she left him with one.
About the time John got home
from work, a  big rainstorm started.
We did get to see the F35A jets
flyover on the KSL News...
The sun came out after the
cloud burst...
...and the mountains came
more and more back in to view.
 John is watching out for
us tonight.
 The fly over was to honor the
front line care givers...
doctors, nurses, all who are
keeping the hospitals going
during this Covid19 Pandemic.
 The lead pilot was a gal.
 The care givers were out taking
photos of the fly over...
 All their patterns are impressive!
 ...
 ...unity in care giving.
 I think this is the young man 
whose last name is "Corona."
 Max is scouting out our supper...
 Now we can see the mountains...
Lone Peak, and Mt. Timpanogas.
 A bunch of boys were waiting
for someone outside...
 ...but Pepper was guarding us today.

We had an interesting experience closing 
from our car this morning. 
We have been so excited for this day

We are so grateful to be able to be in this home 
and only hope we can be as amazing

hard to find these days. Julie
found it at a farm store. It was
only at CalRanch in Burley that
I could find it.

The CNA comes three
times a week...
 Jackson mowed the front lawn
early this morning.
 Walt didn't last very long watching
this 1968 sci-fi movie... 
 I didn't get the beginning or 
ending 52 years ago...
and I still don't...
Gary said this about 
2001: a space odyssey
"It does run a little slow, and some strange imaging
....but still the most true to life space travel movie ever made." 
 Gary, that's what some of the critics say about it: "No greater science fiction movie was made before this one, and no greater has been made since."
Eileen's note: It did help me a little more to read in Wikipedia that it depicts four phases:

An update on our grandson Kimble:

Just a quick update on Kimble: He is at AST school in North Carolina. 

This is an invitation only school. 

Last month, He had to go to a week long assessment 
to see if he would qualify to matriculate.
A few weeks ago, he started his class with 28 guys.
As of this morning there were only 11 guys left!!
Sounds like the "water-con" (water confidence) training is brutal and stressful.

Hope he makes it the rest of the 5 months!!

I asked Steve what AST meant:
Aviation Survival Technician
 He will be known as a "Rescue Swimmer"
if he graduates AST School
in September or October 2020.
It's also known as A-School.

Weather looks good today.
Another delicious Sunday dinner...
John's sister, Geni, her two daughters,
her son-in-law and soon-to-be son-in-law
came. John and Jackson helped Geni
move yesterday.
Nothing better than Texas Chocolate 
Sheet Cake and Ice Cream for dessert!
 We enjoy being together.
