Traces of Time . . .Aug 29-Sep 4            {Last week: Scroll to end and click "Older Posts" at bottom right.}

On this blog I share with family and friends my daily thoughts, doings, what interests me, and--at times--tributes to my eternal sweetheart, Walt, who graduated to heaven on 8-21-2020.

Dedicated to our seven children--Janie, Gary, Steve, David, Julie, Brian, Jen, their spouses, our 39 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and posterity to come.

Daily Scripture: Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. - Romans 15:13
Daily Quote: Hope is not knowledge, but rather the abiding trust that the Lord will fulfill His promise to us. It is confidence that if we live according to God’s laws and the words of His prophets now, we will receive desired blessings in the future. It is believing and expecting that our prayers will be answered. It is manifest in confidence, optimism, enthusiasm, and patient perseverance. - Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Family is Everything….
I've been typing Walt's missionary journal.
When he left Salt Laker City--Saturday, August 21, 1954--on the train-- "after just four days' training in the 'mission home' which was in a hotel in Salt Laker City,
his family was at the train station to tell him goodbye, but he said he "called Barbara" from a payphone booth to tell her goodbye. So I copied her photo from the high school annual to show our posterity who Walt's girl friend was when he left on his mission.
She was 17 just starting her senior year at Wendell High School (Idaho).
The rule then was a young man had to be 20 years old to serve a mission, so Walt had completed two years of college, majoring in civil engineering.

Barbara was pretty, talented, and smart. I feel really blessed that it didn't work out when he got home from his mission 2 1/2 years later (March 1957).
I was just starting my 9th grade when Walt left on his mission in 1954.
In photo of class officers I'm second from left. I'm first in the single pictures, because
my maiden was Albertson.
I am loving typing his journal. I'm up to November 1954. It's a spiritual journey seeing what he was doing and feeling each day
as he served.

Ladies' Lunch was at Magleby's in Springville. I think this is our third
annual trip to go there and then
do a tour at the Springville Museum of
Art to the Quilt Festival this time of year.

 Tammy, Kathie
 Carol, Jen.

 Jen, Sue's darling daughter

 had fun telling

us that she was born when

her Mom was in Egypt.

Doc's Wednesday buffet

two fish choices, ravioles,
two potato choices, two

daughter, Emma, who has
recently graduated from
BYU Idaho and will soon
be student teaching

Sue, Eileen.

Eight were able to come today.

Katy, Emma.

 This enlarged photo won't
show everyone but will
show our fun round table

at Magleby's, this
elegant restaurant
we go to once a year.
From there we went to the...
...for the 48th Annual
Utah Quilt Show.

daughter, Jen, who are
both quilters and
great seamstresses.

"His Majesty the Tree"
which got Best of Show.
It had many shiny jewels
and tiny gold chains sewn
into it.

Cousins happy to
be together...
Katy took a photo of me
by the Tahiti quilt because
I love palm trees.

We served  9 1/2 years on
4 missions in countries
that have palm trees.

(Actually, Walt served
12 years because
his mission as a young
man was in Uruguay-
Paraguay for 2 1/2 years.)

This beautiful book
about Springville
was only $16 with tax.
We got to stop by
Mark's impressive
FlowMax Manufacturing
Company that is in
Springville.

 Thanks for driving
us, Tammy.

We enjoy having
lunch at Magleby's and
going to the Quilt Show.

We always miss those
who can't come.

   Our Wednesday night movie...

To end our "Back to School"
theme for
August we watched

the 1955 "Blackboard Jungle."

Our son, Gary, started this tradition
in December 2018. after we'd been here 4 months. We watched Christmas movies.
We've seen a lot of great movies each Wednesday since then.

The last movie Walt saw with us was Walt Disney's Pinnochio on July 19, 2020. I'm
thankful Gary still watches movies with
me on Wednesdays.

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – Utah Jazz All-Star Donovan Mitchell is saying goodbye to Utahns after a trade to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The basketball star took to social media Friday to give a farewell message to fans, as well as long-time Jazz Head Coach Quin Snyder.

‘The Nature of Color': Presented by the Natural History Museum of Utah

“Thank you for the memories and the incredible times…” Mitchell states. “You guys watched me grow up on and off the floor…”

The goodbye comes after the Jazz traded the all-star guard to the Cavaliers in exchange for three players and three first round draft picks.

Judge each day not by the harvest you reap

but by the seeds you plant.

William A. Ward  In today’s hustle culture it’s easy to feel sometimes that achievement and productivity are the only standards by which our value is measured. But it’s crucial to remember that every success starts with a small step, an initial investment, a simple plan. With this quote, motivational writer William A. Ward speaks to the importance of patience, urging us to find satisfaction and pride in even our smallest strides.

                    Family is Everything…

I just saw this poem about
the Book of Mormon.

 ONE SOLITARY MAN
The battle was finally over.
Silence filled the air.
No more sounds of conflict.
Just one Nephite had been spared.
Where before there was a battle
With fervor and with might,
Now nothing but the fallen.
Moroni was left to see the sight.
Just one solitary man.
Just one soldier in despair.
He roamed the gory scene
And mourned the fallen there.
His own father fell in battle,
Brave until the end.
Now Moroni stood alone
Without family or friend.
What was it like to wander
The promised land alone,
Seeing such a tragedy
Destroy his beloved home?
Just one solitary man
In whom God could trust;
Just one man to keep the record
That he guarded just for us.
He proved to be dependable,
For now millions of all ages
Know the Nephites and the Lamanites
From Book of Mormon pages.
Now Moroni is loved by many
Who hope to meet him if they can,
For their whole lives were changed,
Thanks to one solitary man.

Football Season begins

We moved a lot when my children were younger. It was hard but they always had one constant…this home. It’s hard to believe that this modest, small house could possibly hold so many memories; so much laughter, a measure of tears, some family arguments but mostly lots and lots of love. We moved my mom out of this home yesterday…and said goodbye to the heart of our family. This home, this place, this feeling, that we all love so much. It sheltered us when we needed to go there and heal…it held countless Thanksgiving dinners and backyard campouts, and family reunions. It was where my dad took his last breath and it gave us strength and held us up. I know it’s only a place. I know there will be new adventures and many more reunions and family gatherings, but I will always miss this little, quirky house with its bright orange kitchen countertops and outdated bathrooms…and the tangible feeling of peace and love that radiated to all of us when we opened the front door. It feels like such a loss…but as with any loss, you have to be so grateful you had such a wonderful place to call home. #idahome #grateful

Heavenly Father lives and knows us each by name. He loves us and wants us to return to Him and Heavenly Mother when we leave this mortal existence.
He loves us just
as we are at this very moment.
He knows what our potential is.

"Our perfect Father does not expect us to be perfect children yet. He had only one such Child. Meanwhile, therefore, sometimes with smudges on our cheeks, dirt on our hands, and shoes untied, stammeringly but smilingly we present God with a dandelion—as if it were an orchid or a rose! If for now the dandelion is the best we have to offer, He receives it, knowing what we may later place on the altar. It is good to remember how young we are spiritually." - Neal A. Maxwell, "That Ye May Believe," p. 100
