Traces of Time . . . September 24-30, 2018

Traces of Time . . .

(To see last week's blog post--scroll down to the end of this week, then the Week of Sept. 17-23 will be there. If it's not
hit "Older posts.)
THIS WEEK - SEPTEMBER 24-30, 2018
SUMMER will turn to  FALL

monDAY, SEPTEMBER 242018
Walt had a swelling around a tooth and some pain.
Julie had us go to a dentist here in Saratoga Springs.
It needs to be pulled.
Then Walt took me to breakfast.
 Julie's been helping us with
our revised budget.
We saw the harvest moon
from the front porch.
The first full moon after the
Fall Equinox is the "Harvest Moon."
 I took this photo at 8:52 p.m.
when KSL News said was the
exact time of the
moon at its fullest.

tueSDAY, SEPTEMBER 252018
Walt's ready for the consult before his tooth is pulled.
Now ready for the tooth to be pulled.
Dr. Rasmussen is taking
the tooth out.
Dr. Greenwood--the dentist from yesterday--
referred Walt to the oral surgeon to
take the tooth out because
Walt's blood pressure was
a little high.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 262018

I had my teeth cleaned this morning.
Then we drove to Rexburg
Michael was the goalie for the Madison High School soccer game vs Rigby.
Michael played a great game. Madison beat Rigby 3-0.
We love being with our children and grandchildren.

Michael with his Mom and two sisters.
This photo shows up better with
Janie, Aimee, Michael, and Ashley.
thurSDAY, SEPTEMBER 272018
 We've loved talking with Aimee.
 Aimee has Michael's Jeep here.
We did a 45-minute walk to the Nature Park
and back to Janie and Shawn's home...
about a mile total.
Janie and Shawn had a few minutes
to talk to everyone before they
cooked dinner for 10, then had a couple
of meetings to go to: one for school,
the other for their Idaho Ballroom Academy.
We took turns holding Katie and Parker's
new baby boy, Diesel.
 Katie is nursing, but also
suplements with a bottle.
New baby's are so precious.

Aimee is a wonderful Aunt to Taitum and Diesel.
Katie drove Parker over to
football practice.
He is an Assistant Coach for
the 8th grade team.
Janie is putting the finishing touches
on the pork chop main dish.
 It was a delicious dinner.
The cooked carrots were from Heidi's garden.
Parker, Katie, Diesel, Michael, Aimee
 Taitum came over to play.
She's still figuring out who that new person
is in their family.
Heidi and Jordan came over just as
ice cream was being served
Heidi and Jordan said their garden
froze last night. They brought over some
cucumbers and apples.
Michael tried getting some whipped cream
in his mouth after lobbing some into the air.
He made it on the second try.
Michael baked a 1/2 batch of
chocolate chip cookies for everyone.
friDAY, SEPTEMBER 282018
This morning they canned pears that
Heidi had bought from a fellow who
brings them into town.
 Such a darling couple.
Jordan is farming with his Dad on
the west side of Rexburg, and also
taking classes at BYU-Idaho.
Heidi is one of the managers at
an apparel shop at a Mall in Idaho Falls.
She is planning to also continue
taking classes at BYU-I.
One batch is ready to take out.
A new batch is going in.
They got 12 quarts out of
the box of pears that cost $25.00.
I told them we didn't know how good we
had it back in the day when we were
canning about 100 quarts of peaches
and probably half that many pears.
A bushel of peaches was $1.98, and
a bushel of pears $2.98.
We then went to the beautiful Rexburg Temple.
It's always nice to go to the temple.
Someone called the stairway behind us
"The Stairway to Heaven."
A crack was discovered in the roof,
and they are repairing it,
Janie cooked spare ribs and
baked potatoes for supper.

It was delicious.
She also cooked cauliflower
with cheese sauce.
Michael eats like a typical teenage boy.
We came to watch Ashley cheer.
She is second from the left.

There are fourteen on the cheer squad.
 Ashley is in the center
They did a neat thing.
For every touchdown their team makes,
two guys hold up this big banner with
the school song and everyone in the bleachers
sings the school song along with
the cheer squad.

 Katie and Taitum are
standing in the background.
This is Diesel's second football game.
 \Diesel and his Grama Janie.
 Taitum was unhappy
when her stuffed animal monkey
fell under the bleachers.
But Katie went to
retrieve it.
Ten of us came out to see Ashley cheer.
Katie and Parker, Taitum, Diesel (Aimee is
holding him), Aimee, Shawn, Janie,
Grampa Petersen, Grama Petersen,
Michael.

 Parker and Katie with
Diesel and Taitum.
Ashley got to take a break at half-time.
She came up in the bleachers to hold Diesel.
Diesel - 6 weeks and 1 day old.
 Micheal, a 15-y-o sophomore,
loves holding his 2 1/2-y-o niece, Taitum.
  Grampa Shawn loves holding his
grandson, Diesel.

We all agreed that Ashley was the best
cheerleader out there!
Of course, each family feels that their
daughter/granddaughter is the best.
(But Ashley really is the best!}
 Madison wins big - 48 to 14.

SaturDAY, SEPTEMBER 292018
This morning we drove back to Utah.
We rendezvoused with Dale and Connie
at 3:15 this afternoon.
We ate supper at Sean's Smokehouse.
We all liked the spare ribs,
baked beans, and cole slaw.
They got a new Honda last week.
They watched the BYU Game with us
6:30 to 9:30.
BYU played Washington in Seattle.

During the 3rd quarter when
BYU still hadn't scored and we
were getting whipped, Connie said:
"Maybe there's a good movie on
another channel."

Headlines after the game:
"Washington Huskies rout
BYU Cougars 35-7"

We got some photos before Dale and Connie
headed back to Layton.
They will go to Dale's grandsons Mission report
tomorrow in Clifton.
Elder Jacob  Lee served in the
California Long Beach Mission - Spanish speaking.
He is Heather and Nate Lee's son.
Nate's mother is a Beck from Burley.
She may be Bob and Joe Beck's sister, but
I'm not sure of that

SUnDAY, SEPTEMBER 302018
Today our Saratoga Springs 3rd Ward
block was from 11:00a.m.-2:07 p.m.

It was Fast Sunday in our stake.
(Each stake can choose when Fast Sunday
will be -  the Sunday before or
after General Conference.)

There were 8 testimonies shared from
11:25 a.m. to 12:10 noon in
Sacrament Meeting.
I was #8.
I remember from my two years at BYU, the
ward members I felt like I knew the best
were the ones that bore their testimony.
Bonnie Benson--the daughter of the
Apostle Ezra Taft Benson--was in
my BYU Ward, and I loved
hearing her testimonies.
I think I was only brave
enough to bear my
testimony once during
my time at BYU.
So I felt like if the ward
members in our new ward here
were going to get to know Walt
and me, I should bear my testimony.
We want the members here to know that
we do have a testimony.
And as Bishop Ted Mardesich
said in the 5th Sunday class:
"Testimony is found in the bearing of it."
Before Sunday School class started,
 the couple behind
us asked what our name was.
In my testimony I had mentioned that
we had lived in Burley, Idaho, for 52 years.
They said they had lived in Twin Falls for
about 5 years, between 1981 to 1986.
He was a drug rep and had gone
to a Dr. Petersen's office in Burley often.
I replied that there were two Dr. Petersens
in Burley.  He said it was the older one,
and that his receptionist-secretary was
Velma Jean Mabey.
said to them: "This is that Dr. Petersen."
They were totally amazed~!
As we often say: "Small world in the Church."

Our Sunday School lesson was #36, Isaiah 1-6.
"The Glory of Zion Will Be A Defense"
Purpose: "To encourage us to avoid the evils
of the world by standing in holy places
and to help us draw strength from Isaiah's
willingness to serve."

Some of Isaiah's prophecies about the
last days sounded just like the
world we are living in now, especially
"...calling good evil, and evil good."

This is just our teacher's second week as
the Gospel Doctrine teacher.
She mentioned she had studied these
6 chapters of Isaiah for 11 hours to
prepare for this class.
She moved to the United States from
Brazil in 1992.
She loved how patriotic it was then,
and misses that now.

Then because it is the 5th Sunday--
in place of Priesthood and Relief Society,
everyone combined to hear messages
from the Bishopric.
The theme they had chosen was:
"Revelation.  We should continually
seek for our own personal revelation."

The question was asked:
"Would anyone like to share a
revelatory experience you have had in the past week?"
I couldn't hear the two answers from the

other side of the room.
I think the batteries in my hearing aids are dying.

John had a wonderful Sunday dinner ready
soon after we got home from Church.

We knew Steve and Natalie were having us
come to dinner in the early evening,
but because of my diabetes, I
can't go that long without eating.
So we had dinner with Julie and John.
We take only small portions, however.
John's tri-tip roast is always so tender.
And today he cooked potatoes and carrots
with the roast.
He also makes gravy, and had the
green beans that he and his Mom
pressure canned in Burley
from his garden plot
by Julie's pumpkin patch
here in Saratoga Springs.

Kimble and Carter came to drive us
over to their home in North Saratoga Springs.
Steve and Natalie had prepared spare ribs.
Along with the ribs they had prepared
chicken wings, funeral potatoes,
green beans, tossed salad,
fruit salad with strawberries, blue berries,
and green grapes, plus a separate bowl
of watermelon, and hot, homemade rolls.
A special treat was Missionary Punch.*
For dessert was banana bread,
zucchini bread, and pumpkin bread.

*Recipe for Missionary Punch...
(originally from Grama A)
Cherry Kool Aid -- Add 1 cup sugar and
2 quarts water.
1 can frozen orange juice - reconstituted
1 can frozen lemonade - reconstituted
Mix this together
(Since I never had a pitcher to hold 6 quarts,
I mixed half of each of these together...
then the other half.
When ready to serve, add a couple cans of
Sprite to a half batch.
A yummy tangy and sparkly drink.

The reason it's called Missionary Punch:
The first time I made this punch after having
it at my Mom and Dad's home in Gooding, Idaho,
we had the missionaries come to dinner in Burley.

One of the missionaries loved it so much, he had
several glassfuls.
So our kids called it "Missionary Punch" ever after.

The dinner was delicious.
It was fun to also have Cortney and Tomas
and Cortney's little Yorkie there.
The puppy's name is Nugiya but
Kimble and Carter call him Midget.

The photo above is better, but Cortney added a
glamor pose in the one below.
Steve is putting a book on their heads.
First tie Carter has been taller than his om.
We thank Kimble and Carter for picking us up
and driving us back home.
Steve and Natalie live about 10-15 minutes from
Julie and John's home.

Walt wore his lavender tie today.
As it is past bedtime, we pray you have had
a restful and peaceful Sabbath Day.

We bear testimony of these seven truths:
Heavenly Father lives and loves us. He knows Walt and me and you by name.  He wants us all to return to our Heavenly Home with Him and His Eternal Sweetheart--our Heavenly Mother.

Jesus Christ is the Firstborn Spirit Child of our Heavenly Parents, and the Only Begotten Son of Heavenly Father.  He
lived a Perfect Life here on Earth and then sacrificed His Life for us.  Because of His Atonement, we can be forgiven of our sins when we repent.  We will each be resurrected because of His Atonement.  We can never thank Him enough for His Great Gift to us.

Joseph Smith is the Prophet of the Restoration.  Under the direction of Heavenly Father who introduced Our Savior, Jesus Christ to Joseph, The Gospel was restored to Earth once again after The Great Apostasy.

The Bible is a Testament of the Divinity of Jesus Christ as the Son of God.

From the Book of Mormon, translated from gold plates buried in the ground on Hill Cumorah by the ancient Prophet Moroni, we have Another Testament of Jesus Christ.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true Church on the Earth today.

President Russell M. Nelson is the true and living Prophet for the whole world today.

Of these truths we testify, in the Name of Jesus Christ, amen.
