Traces of Time . . . September 17-23, 2018

Traces of Time . . .

THIS WEEK - SEPTEMBER 17-23, 2018
Summer will turn to  Fall

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 172018
Today went to Ridley's in The Ranches
to mail a package at the post office
there at Ridley's.

Tonight Steve and Natale, Kimble and Carter brought us a treat - Lindt Lindor Milk Chocolate Truffles.
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 182018
Today after supper...
...was chosen as the time to pick
the first of...
 ...the pumpkins.
 Julie grows pumpkins.

She tried growing other
things, but it didn't work,
 so she grows pumpkins.
Riggy picked out his.
Maddie, Jackson, and Jacee picked out theirs.
 John helped carry them
to the front of the house.

Grama 'n Grampa picked out theirs.
Now, the rest of the pumpkins--
except for the
Cousins' Pumpkin Carving Night--
will be sold.
 Then the boys practiced golf.
We watched the sun set from the back yard.
 And so did Max.
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 192018
Jacee is on her way to a practice
for her BYU Teen Ballroom Team
This evening we met Gary at the
Family History Center by the Mt. Timpanogos Temple.
I learned more about sharing Life Stores
on familysearch.org
Walt and Gary worked on
Grama Jane Prescott Petersen Hashman's line.
On the way home we stopped at JCW'S.
It reminded us of Central and South America....
It was almost 9:00 at night and a
lot of families were eating supper
that late on a school night!
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 202018
Today Walt had an appointment with Dr. Foster. David met us at the University of Utah Neurology and Cognitive Center.
Here is David's summary:
"I wanted to update you on the appointment Dad had today at the U of U
cognitive disorders clinic today, with the Chief of the Division, Dr. Norman Foster
(a fellow Wash U. Med school alum!)* It was a great visit, that really clarified the
issues and gave us a path forward.  It was very thorough, and lasted from
1:00 to 4:30 pm, with almost no waiting time.
To get to the point, Dad does not have Alzheimer’s disease as was
previously thought.
He has “Lewy Body Dementia”.
This is a form of cognitive impairment that is related to the same
underlying process of Parkinson’s Disease.
Dr. Foster put together the seemingly unrelated symptoms of visual
hallucinations, being very restless
in REM sleep, and the type of mobility issues Dad has as
classic for this syndrome.

So, the first step is that he referred us to one of the geriatric specialists
at the U, who works closely with
the cognitive center.

Also, he really stressed the importance of social interaction and exercise.
He thought it was a very good thing
that he had moved down to have more regular interaction with family,
and he recommended social
interaction outside the family twice a week.  He encouraged Dad to
get 30 minutes of physical exercise
every day, such as walking a mile.

We scheduled a Family Coordinating meeting at the U for Thursday,
11/1/18 at 2:00 pm.
As many of us as are available to attend, the better.
Those who cannot attend physically can be conference called in.

I think this appointment was a huge step forward, making a diagnosis
that is often overlooked and
just called Alzheimer’s, except for those subtle clues Dr. Foster was
able to pick up on,
but it explains so much and fits perfectly with Dad’s overall symptoms.
And it gives better and more specific treatment options.
At the end of the appointment, dad asked what the chances of
improvement are, and
Dr. Foster said “I think the chances of improvement are excellent!”
As long as we really take the recommendations to heart and work on it.
It gave me great hope!"

*Walt graduated from Washington University School of Medicine
in St. Louis in June 1963; David graduated from the same
medical school in 1998; Dr. Foster in 1977.
It stays ranked the #3 top medical school in the nation.
I think it's Harvard and Johns Hopkins that trade the #1 and #2
spots from year to year.
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 212018

Happy Birthday, to our granddaughter,

Kelsey Taylor. Hope you have a great day!
Today I had an appointment at the University of Utah Center for Endocrinology and Diabetes follow up.
We are slowly finding physicians here
in Utah to help us with our health problems.
On the way home I drove by the house on
Skyline Drive just a block up east
from Foothill Drive.
I lived there a year helping the Badger
Family with their seven children
during the year after
Business College when working at
First Security Bank
before I entered BYU in Sep 1959.
It helped me save money to return to college.
John and a couple other scout leaders
took the scouts on an overnighter
to Little Sarah, the sand dunes west of Nephi.
John loves that his son Jackson
is in the Troop.
 Kimble took Rigdon, Maddie, and
Maddie's friend swimming at the
natural hot springs pool at their
residential area.
And now we bid Summer farewell....

...and for our Tennessee kids--Brian and Jennifer and family,
WE SAY:
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 222018

Early this morning was the annual Yard Sale for Julie and John's neighborhood.
David and Julie's neighbor at Fox Crossing in Draper, puts flags on the lawns for both the "Y" fans and the "Ute" fans on the home game days.
It's hard to see... it's on the right side of the driveway.
It was fun to see all the "Y" flags as we drove
in and out of their neighborhood.
This morning we went with David and Julie to do sealings of family names that David and Julie and kids had done baptisms, initiatory, and endowments for in the Draper Temple.
And it was a wonderful SERENDIPITY (happy surprise) when
we came out of the temple the same time our good friends from
Burley did.
Scott and G'lenn were here to go to the American Fork High School soccer game for his granddaughter (Darren's daughter) on Thursday night.  Then Friday they had done sessions at the Payson and Provo City Center Temple, and this morning the Draper Temple.  They had never been to any of these three temples before.
And, then, of course, they were planning to go to the BYU vs McNeese football game.  Scott has had season tickets for many years.
Julie and John, Steve and Natalie, and Gary did a pot luck supper as we gathered for the BYU game.
C
The first quarter McNeese - a university in Lake Charles, Louisiana - played really well and took a 3-0 lead.  However, in the 2nd quarter BYU played much better and took the lead, ending with a 30-3 win.

BYU Cougars vs  McNEESE Cowboys.
BYU was ranked 25 after their win over Wisconsin last Saturday.

RISE AND SHOUT THE COUGARS ARE OUT!
Way to go Cougars!
Nice to be close to family.
Fun to be together to watch BYU football!
Another game was going on...
Rigdon had a Bey-blade Tourney with his Uncle Steve,
with a type of top that you spin.
Riggy was very in to it, and won almost every game.
He did have a kind lesson from his Dad
when after 17 straight wins, he lost.
He didn't take it well.
After a time out, his Dad asked:
Do you know what you do when you lose?
"No," replied Riggy.
You give the winning person a high five and
say: "Good game."
Hard lesson for a 4-year-old little boy.
Today Riggy learned about sportsmanship.
Julie added the final touch to her
Fall decorations outside.

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 232018

It was Stake Conference for the Saratoga Springs Utah Stake.

We learned:
From Sister Bennion, how she as a teenage girl relies on the Atonement of the Savior to help her face each day.

From Brother and Sister Jeffrey's who said they were not seeking a Church 32 years ago, but when two young Elders from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came to their door, they discovered truths they had never known about.

Anne Bills said she had always loved Jesus and now she loves Him even more. The "rod" in the Book of Mormon represents Christ to her and the "path" is the Way. Most of the time when we "minister" it isn't at Church. True followers listen to the Holy Ghost and we should not be surprised to hear our Heavenly Father say when we leave this life on earth: "Good job! Welcome Home!"

President Dale Matson, 2nd Counselor in the Stake Presidency shared why the Book of Mormon and "Strength of Youth" are so important to him as he hopes they are to us.

President Mark Beecher, 1st Counselor in the Stake Presidency told us how the hymn "I Need Thee Every Hour" became a turning point in his young life.  He shared each verse as he gave examples. He said Satan sells sin as some kind of satisfaction for the verse "...temptations lose their power when Thou art nigh." Instead of running away from sin, RUN TO THE SAVIOR.
"Prioratize" is not a word he has seen in the scriptures, but "SACRIFICE" is! Take His yoke...burdens will seem lighter, joys will seem greater.

President Mark Wilkinson, Stake President, focused on loving the Lord with all our might, mind, and strength.  Be grateful for adversity. Aspire to put the devil at bay by putting walls up at home to keep Satan out.  He gingerly and gently counseled that perhaps the pattern of our prayers could be in a different paradigm to what I do I do out of a sense of love for all Heavenly Father has done for me.

This is not even a tenth of all we were taught, but just a biscuit compared to the whole loaf.

We came away well nourished for having attended these two hours of our first stake conference in our new Saratoga Springs Utah Stake Conference.

We are thankful for our stake and ward leaders and all they do and all the time they give in leading and guiding us with all their might, mind, and strength.

We had a short nap and then watched the BYU Idaho Devotional given September 4th by Joe McWilliams about three weeks ago.  The title is "Bits, Bytes, and Blessings."
I highly recommend it.

 www.byui.edu/devotionals
We watched a Mormon Tabernacle Choir program, then left at four o'clock for Draper.
Today we could see the "Y" flag better.
Today we had dinner with David and Julie, Josh, Anna, Sam, William.  When I said to Julie: "You always set such a beautiful table, she replied: "Today David was in charge of the table."
So I said: "Oh, David, you set a beautiful table."
The family was busy in the kitchen with the final preparations for dinner.
Anna helped get the tossed salad served.
Sam putting the frosting he made onto the Texas chocolate sheet cake he baked.
The roast beef dinner was delicious as always!
Sam was all smiles when Grampa and I told him how good his chocolate cake was.
Walt had fun retelling the experience he had as the physician on a Coast Guard Cutter back in Aug-Nov 1964,,,
The Chataquaua...a really small cutter was next to a huge Navy
Carrier at the Harbor in Yokuska, Japan where they were on a two-week RandR before heading back to their station between Midway Island and Japan.
The Coast Guard guys were challenging the sailors on the huge carrier...
Walt said the little cutter would fit sideways on the huge Navy vessell.  He said sometimes the Coast Guard and Navy guys don't see eye to eye.
We love being by family.  They are all so good to us and make us feel loved and well cared for.
 FAMILIES ARE FOREVER!
As the sun sets on this second day of Autumn,  we pray you have had a restful, peaceful, and spiritual Sabbath Day.

We testify that...
God lives and loves each one of us. He knows us by name.
As President Wilkinson closed his message this morning:
"Every person is a child of two grand Heavenly Parents."
He then left a blessing as our stake president that Heavenly Father will expand our love and our  capacity to be prepared to see Him again with joy.

Jesus Christ is the first-born Spirit Son of Heavenly Father Who also knows each one of us by name and loves us.  He is the Only Begotten Son of God Who came to Earth to sacrifice His perfect Life for us to be our Savior and Redeemer.

Joseph Smith is the Prophet of the Restoration.
"The appearance of God the Father and his Son Jesus Christ to the boy prophet [Joseph Smith] is the greatest event that has occurred in this world since the resurrection of the Master. [Ezra Taft Benson, “Life Is Eternal,” Ensign, June 1971, 34]"

The Bible is the Word of God as far as it is translated correctly. It is a Testament of the Divinity of Jesus Christ.

The Book of Mormon is Another Testament of Jesus Christ.
As President Matson quoted from the Introduction to the Book of Mormon this morning: "Joseph Smith said: '...the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth, and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get closer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.' "

President Russell M. Nelson is the Living Prophet today for the entire world.  We are grateful for him and his inspired leadership and guidance.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true Church on the Earth today.  If you do not belong yet, as one of our recent Prophets said - paraphrasing: Come bring all the good you have in your Church and we will add more good...

Of these truths we testify, in the Name of Jesus Christ, amen.
