On this blog I share with family and friends my daily thoughts, doings, what interests me, and--at times--tributes to my eternal sweetheart, Walt, who graduated to heaven on 8-21-2020.

Daily Scripture: Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. - Romans 15:13
Daily Quote: Hope is not knowledge, but rather the abiding trust that the Lord will fulfill His promise to us. It is confidence that if we live according to God’s laws and the words of His prophets now, we will receive desired blessings in the future. It is believing and expecting that our prayers will be answered. It is manifest in confidence, optimism, enthusiasm, and patient perseverance. - Dieter F. Uchtdorf

Family is Everything…
Today I had cataract surgery.
David picked me up at 5:45 and we
were at the Physicians Surgery Center
at
Dr. Paul Jeppsen, Lisa, Laura, Cristelle were the surgery team at the Physicians Surgery Center. I was surprised how fast the surgery was--under 30 min.

I was also surprised that there was no pain nor discomfort ever.

David took me to breakfast at Denny's when we got to Saratoga Springs.

"On the evening of November 14, 1970, the Thundering Herd football team, along with coaches and fans, were returning home to Huntington from Kinston, North Carolina. The team had just lost a game 17–14 against the East Carolina University Pirates at Ficklen Stadium in Greenville, North Carolina. The chartered Southern Airways Flight 932 crashed on approach to the Tri-State Airport after clipping trees just west of the runway and impacting, nose-first, into a hollow. All 75 people on board were killed, including 37 players and five coaches. Thirteen members of the team, as well as the members of the freshman football team, who were not eligible to play varsity under NCAA rules at that time, were not passengers."

 Go Cougars!

The No. 10 Baylor Bears and No. 25 BYU Cougars meet up in Week 2 at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah. Kickoff is set for 10:15 p.m. ET and the game will air on ESPN.

Both programs are coming off blowout victories, and this should be one of the most competitive matchups featuring strong programs of college football’s Week 2. Baylor smoked Albany 69-10, and Blake Shapen played well as he gets going in his first season as a full-time starter, completing 17-of-20 passes for 214 yards with two touchdowns.

BYU ran all over the USF Bulls with 312 rushing yards in a 50-21 victory to open its season. Jaren Hall completed 25-of-32 passes for 261 yards with two touchdowns and an interception as both teams will see much tougher tests in what should be a fun one late on Saturday night.

This was posted on face book the day after this game
by one of our missionaries who served with us in
the Mexico Merida Mission 1995-1998m Braxton Schenk.

*Stolen from a post I found on LinkedIn. And I couldn’t agree more with his message.

"LEADERSHIP: Please read to the end! This isn’t about football. And it’s not about my alma mater, BYU. It’s about leadership, and I hope this post gets shared by all and gains traction. Context: #21 BYU played #9 Baylor yesterday in a late night football game broadcasted on ESPN. It was a hard fought game by both teams on both sides of the ball. The game was tied 20-20 with just under 2 minutes left in the 4th quarter. BYU had the ball and put together an impressive drive with QB Jaren Hall using his arm and his feet to move the ball downfield for the game-winning field goal with 13 seconds left on the clock. Unfortunately, kicker Jake Oldroyd missed. What looked to be an easy field goal sailed wide left. Overtime. BYU makes another impressive defensive stop on Baylor, and BYU QB Jaren Hall sets kicker Jake Oldroyd up perfectly for redemption - another chance to kick the game-winning FG. Wide right. Not even close. Double OT. BYU offense gets the ball first and puts together a nice touchdown drive. The BYU defense then proceeds to make several impressive stops on Baylor, securing a 26-20 victory in the double OT thriller. BYU fans storm the field. Players, coaches and fans dancing and “high-fiving” on the field, with ESPN broadcasting the celebration.

Here’s the best part, and the point of my post: where was BYU QB Jaren Hall? He wasn’t out on the field celebrating with his teammates. He wasn’t being swept up by the fans that were storming the field. And he wasn’t discussing his MVP performance with an ESPN reporter. He was on the sidelines hugging BYU kicker Jake Oldroyd. Not just a “chin-up, bro, we won!” hug, but a consoling, compassionate embrace. ESPN cameras panned 3 times from the crowd on the field back to Jaren and Jake on the sidelines, still embracing, with Jake appearing to even be getting a little emotional. But the broadcasters said NOTHING. Missed opportunity. So I am posting it here. This is leadership! Searching out a teammate - one who was clearly devastated after letting down his teammates and coaches TWICE - rather than running off to celebrate your own late game heroics?!? That speaks more loudly of Jaren Hall as a leader than anything else he did in the stadium that night. I am a devoted BYU fan, but today I am an even greater fan of Jaren Hall. Thank you, Jaren!"

Eileen's note: I feel the same way about this game. When I saw this as we were watching the fans storm the field, it was the best part for me when the TV camera man showed it several times. What character this shows for the outstanding BYU  quarterback, Jaren Hall. As for the announcers not saying anything about it on the air, in their defense, perhaps it was too tender to even talk about. The camera men were touched enough to show it, and the seeing of it spoke volumes without any words said. Thank you, Braxton, for sharing these comments. I would not have seen them otherwise.

"We Each Have a Story"
by Elder Gerritt W. Gong

 Francine Johnson taught the lesson
As Elder Gerritt recommended in his talk, Francine had us all go to our "Family Tree" app and see how we in the room are related to each other: Julie and Sue are cousins 13x removed. Julie was also related to Monica Buchan, our next-door neighbor.

Everyone had a good doing this. Nadine and Francine tried loading the app for me but it wouldn't work.
Julie got it installed when we got home.
I'm thankful to Francine for this lesson.
I didn't even know about this app.
I wore red, white, and blue today in
honor of 9/11.

I love when our leaders and
'young men put the flags out
for these special days.
Thanks, John, for another
delicious Roast-beef

** *I am so thankful for The Plan of Salvation and the Atonement of  Jesus Christ that makes this Great Plan operational.
At the end of this September 11th,

I pray you have had a

restful , peaceful, and spiritual

Sabbath Day...

I share these truths as my testimony to you...

Heavenly Father lives and knows us each by name. He loves us and wants us to return to Him and Heavenly Mother when we leave this mortal existence.
He loves us just
as we are at this very moment.
He knows what our potential is.

"Our perfect Father does not expect us to be perfect children yet. He had only one such Child. Meanwhile, therefore, sometimes with smudges on our cheeks, dirt on our hands, and shoes untied, stammeringly but smilingly we present God with a dandelion—as if it were an orchid or a rose! If for now the dandelion is the best we have to offer, He receives it, knowing what we may later place on the altar. It is good to remember how young we are spiritually." - Neal A. Maxwell, "That Ye May Believe," p. 100

I am thankful for the guidance of the Holy Ghost as the third member of the Godhead.
Walt said to me once: "I look forward to thanking the Holy Ghost in person when I get to Heaven. I don't think we give Him enough credit for all He does."
