John Ernst Steinbeck Jr. (/ˈstnbɛk/; February 27, 1902 – December 20, 1968) was an American writer and the 1962 Nobel Prize in Literature winner "for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humor and keen social perception."[2] He has been called "a giant of American letters."[3][4]

During his writing career, he authored 33 books, with one book coauthored alongside Edward Ricketts, including 16 novels, six non-fiction books, and two collections of short stories. He is widely known for the comic novels Tortilla Flat (1935) and Cannery Row (1945), the multi-generation epic East of Eden (1952), and the novellas The Red Pony (1933) and Of Mice and Men (1937). The Pulitzer Prize–winning The Grapes of Wrath (1939)[5] is considered Steinbeck's masterpiece and part of the American literary canon.[6] In the first 75 years after it was published, it sold 14 million copies.[7]

Most of Steinbeck's work is set in central California, particularly in the Salinas Valley and the California Coast Ranges region. His works frequently explored the themes of fate and injustice, especially as applied to downtrodden or everyman protagonists.

Houston... ...The Eagle Has Landed!

Today in History -- On todays date 53 years ago, Sunday July 20, 1969, the Apollo 11 astronauts landed on the Moon, becoming the first men on the Moon, & with Neil Armstrongs immortal words Houston, Tranquility Base here -- the Eagle has landed, Republic of Texas President Sam Houston’s name became the first word ever spoken by radio from the surface of the Moon directly to Mission Control back on Planet Earth.

Armstrongs immortal words were spoken by radio to Mission Control at the Manned Spacecraft Center (present-day Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center) at the city of Houston, Texas, which was named in honor of the first President of the Republic of Texas Samuel “Sam” Houston (1793-1863).

Note: Approximately thirty words were spoken between the two astronauts in the Lunar Module during the period of time between when the module’s contact probes first touched the surface of the Moon & when the landing-procedure checklist was completed, & although some people contend that various ones of these words were the first spoken back to Earth, it is a fact that whilst Mission Control did monitor & acknowledge what the astronauts were saying to each other, the first word of the first sentence spoken directly from Tranquility Base to Mission Control back on Earth was indeed “Houston.”

Some quotes from the Bible
about the moon...
Genesis 1:16-19

"And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

“And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

“And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

“And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.”

 Psalm 136:7-9 -- also says the sun to rule the day and the moon to rule the night.

1 Corinthians 15:41

"There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for one star differeth from another star in glory."

   Our Wednesday night movie with Gary was:

"Damn Yankees"

from 1958

In the United Kingdom they
renamed it
"Whatever Lola Wants"
so they wouldn't have to
put a swear word on their marquees.

I really enjoy our Wednesday
night movies with my son Gary.

We've enjoyed the July
theme of baseball movies.
+++ +++ +++ +++ +++ +++ +++
We're ending the movies about
baseball for July with
the 1942
"Pride of the Yankees"
about Lou Gehrig
who died in 1941
of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, [ALS] an incurable neuromuscular illness; it is now commonly referred to in North America as
 "Lou Gehrig's disease".

" Henry Louis Gehrig (born Heinrich Ludwig Gehrig;[1] June 19, 1903 – June 2, 1941) was an American professional baseball first baseman who played 17 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the New York Yankees (1923–1939).

Gehrig's consecutive game streak ended on May 2, 1939, when he voluntarily took himself out of the lineup, stunning both players and fans, after his performance on the field became hampered by an undiagnosed ailment subsequently confirmed to be amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, an incurable neuromuscular illness; it is now commonly referred to in North America as "Lou Gehrig's disease".[10]

The disease forced him to retire at age 36, and claimed his life two years later. The pathos of his farewell from baseball was capped off by his iconic 1939 "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech at Yankee Stadium

In 1969, the Baseball Writers' Association of America voted Gehrig the greatest first baseman of all time,[11] and he was the leading vote-getter on the MLB All-Century Team chosen by fans in 1999.[12] A monument in Gehrig's honor, originally dedicated by the Yankees in 1941, currently resides in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium. The Lou Gehrig Memorial Award is given annually to the MLB player who best exhibits Gehrig's integrity and character.' --wikipedia

 Today Janice texted me about
this little, light-weight,
colorful child's size
jacket she has saved in
her memento boxes.
She asked if that's the
one I brought her from Mexico.

(It is.)
The end of June 1953 my
best friend, Ramona Jensen,
invited me to go with her
and her Dad and Mom--
Carl and Nina Jensen, to
visit her sister Colleen and
husband, Don Nichols in
Victorville, California.
On July 3, we all drove to
San Diego, then across
the border into Mexico--my
first time being out of the
U.S.A.
We got a photo with Ramona's
brother-in-law, Don, with
us in sombreo's.
I think Don was there to
protect us.

That's when I bought matching
'jackets for my sister Janice
and me.
Ramona and I were 14 and
had just finished 8th grade.

Blake Lloyd blessed his
baby daughter, Regan.
I had not heard this in a
baby blessing before:
"...bless you to follow
the guiding light to see at
least one step in front of'
you and to have the courage
to take that step."
He gave his new baby
daughter a nice blessing.
Then he held her so high

the congregation, I
wondered if her mother,
Kathleen got nervous.

Bonnie VanOrden spoke on

Elder Gerrit Gong's
April 2022

General Conference address:

We Each Have a Story

By Elder Gerrit W. Gong

Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles

{Here are the first three paragraphs...}

Friends, brothers and sisters, we each have a story. As we discover our story, we connect, we belong, we become.

My name is Gerrit Walter Gong. Gerrit is a Dutch name, Walter (my father’s name) is an American name, and Gong of course is a Chinese name.

Experts estimate some 70–110 billion people have lived on the earth. Perhaps only one has been named Gerrit Walter Gong.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ {The inbetween is well worth reading!}
{...here are the last two paragraphs.}
We each have a story. Come discover yours. Come find your voice, your song, your harmony in Him. This is the very purpose for which God created the heavens and the earth and saw that they were good.
Praise God’s plan of happiness, Jesus Christ’s Atonement, continuing restoration in His gospel and Church. Please come find your family, all your generations, and bring them home. In the sacred and holy name of Jesus Christ, amen.
Relief Society
Rebecca Sterrett taught
from Jean Bingham's
General Conference talk:
Covenant
She shared the true story
from 1923 about
"The Wonderdog Bobbi"
It's an amazing story
of love and keeping on
the path to get to a
desired destination.
President Jean B. Bingham: ‘Covenants With God Strengthen, Protect and Prepare Us for Eternal Glory’
President Jean B. Bingham, the Church’s Relief Society general president who will complete her service on Aug. 1, spoke during the women’s session of April 2022 general conference. She implored women of all ages to keep their covenants. The following is a summary of what she said.
Notable quotes from President Bingham
“Keeping our covenants allows the Savior’s power to cleanse us as we learn through experience — whether it is a minor misjudgment or a major failing.”
“With Jesus Christ as our anchor and perfect partner, we are assured of His loving strength in trial and of eventual deliverance through Him.”
“There is nothing more important to our eternal progress than keeping our covenants with God.”
Summary of President Bingham’s talk
Women who make and keep covenants with God share spiritual bonds that help meet the challenges of today. Keeping covenants allows women to stay on the covenant path, draw upon the Savior’s power, be strengthened in trials and receive protection from the adversary.
Rappelling requires the right equipment, and confidence and trust in one’s partner. Jesus Christ is the anchor and perfect partner. The spiritual equipment is the covenants one has made. “We can rely on these supports to guide and carry us to safety. As our willing partner, the Savior will not allow us to fall beyond His reach.”
Humble prayer, scripture study, taking the sacrament with a spirit of repentance and reverence, keeping the commandments and following the prophet’s counsel will all strengthen that anchor with Jesus Christ. “Happiness is hollow if we exchange the blessings of eternal joy for momentary ease.”
Women who keep their covenants are looking to the Lord and His prophet for guidance, rather than popular media. Women who have made covenants with God have “the ability to hold up the Lord’s light and lead others to Him.” As they go to the temple often, they will feel sweet reassurances and have the courage to continue.
I share these truths as my testimony to you...
Heavenly Father lives and knows us each by name. He loves us and wants us to return to Him and Heavenly Mother when we leave this mortal existence.  He loves us just as we are at this very moment.
“ The Standard of Truth has been erected; no unhallowed hand can stop the work from progressing; persecutions may rage, mobs may combine, armies may assemble, calumny may defame, but the truth of God will go forth boldly, nobly, and independent, till it has penetrated every continent, visited every clime, swept every country, and sounded in every ear; till the purposes of God shall be accomplished, and the Great Jehovah shall say the work is done.~~ Joseph Smith
