Far out: NASA space telescope's 1st cosmic view goes deep – 2022 Jul 11

This is the first composite image of the #JamesWebbSpaceTelescope with the highest distance and resolution in human history.

We’re looking at galaxies 13 billion light-years away, a past very close to the Big Bang.

This image was presented a few minutes ago by the President Joe Biden from the #WhiteHouse

Our view of the universe just expanded: The first image from NASA's new space telescope unveiled is brimming with galaxies and offers the deepest look of the cosmos ever captured.

Family is Everything…
What did your dad do for a living
when you were growing up?
I just saw this question on face book.
I have never thought of this in order before.
My first inclination was to just put
"carpenter,"
but as I started to type the answer, this is
what I came up with:

{All the towns are in Idaho except for Jarbidge, Nevada; Long Beach, California; Halfway and Oxbow, Oregon and Kemmerer, Wyoming.}

"My Dad was a cook in the Wendell Sport Shop, and also a card dealer in the back room. Then he bought a pool hall in Hagerman with a partner. Then he cooked in two different restaurants in Ketchum, Idaho. Then was the skip tender at the Guggenheim Gold Mine in Jarbidge, Nevada.

Then he built ships at the Long Beach, California Ship Yards during WWII. He became a carpenter when we moved back to Wendell, Idaho.  He helped build schools, business buildings, condos, and homes all over the Magic Valley from Twin Falls to Sun Valley. For several years he helped build dams, like the Hell's Canyon Dam from 1966-1968 where he lived in Half-way and then Oxbow, Oregon, and other dams, and for a few years was helping build the Interstate near Kemmerer, Wyoming. His last several years before retirement he was the Chief Maintenance Carpenter at Tupperware in Jerome, Idaho--driving the 20-miles each way every week-day from Gooding.

He also collected antiques at auctions all over Magic Valley and was going to open an Antique Shoppe when he retired, calling it 'Arnold's Antiques' but he died of colon cancer at age 69 before he got to do that. He kept building on to our little home in Gooding till it was a big, beautiful home, like he had done with our little country-school teacherage in Wendell. Thanks for all your hard work to provide for us. Hope you are happy with whatever calling you have in heaven, Dad. You were a great Daddy to Janice and me. We miss you."

Arnold G. Albertson
My Dad, Almost Age 50
Their 25th Wedding Anniversary
September 29, 1962
Dad, Mom, Janice, and me
in June 1962

Now I will add what he did for a living before he married. His single-parent Mother (Arnold, when he was 15, had helped her get a divorce because his Dad beat her--after he had a brain injury) was living in Hagerman with him and his seven younger siblings, when their tiny shack in the country burned down. Arnold helped rebuild a small home for them. He worked for farmers to earn money to help his Mother during his school years. After he graduated from Hagerman High School, he joined the government program of the CCC's (Civilian Conservation Corps) and sent most of the monthly earnings home to his Mother. They were in the Idaho mountain forest ranges building roads. He was mainly a cook for the crews.

At the time he eloped with my Mom in 1937 (he was 24, she was 17) he was working at the Wendell Sport Shop. [Mom said in her life story: 'He drew a week's salary in advance to buy a wedding ring, the marriage license and gasoline to drive the 70 miles to Hailey and the 70 miles back to Wendell.' Then she added: 'Seemed like we were always a week behind in wages after that.']

We were talking about our dogs...
We have Max - a Maltipoo.
I think they got him in 2012 or 2013
--a year or two before Riggy was born.

I think his full name at first was
"Max -- the one-eyed bandit"

The Maltipoo –

Maltese Poodle Mix

"The adorable Maltipoo dog breed is a result of crossing a Maltese and a Toy Poodle. These playful and intelligent dogs are an excellent family dog and the perfect companion, also making them great for couples, individuals and seniors who live on their own.

These pups are also low maintenance and can also suit those who have never owned a dog before.

The Maltese Poodle Mix is bred to be hypoallergenic and is known as a designer dog. They remain very puppy-like in their appearance even as they age, and their tiny size makes them perfect for taking everywhere you go."

MaryAnn said her new Snhauzner's

name was Teddy Bear at first, but
they've changed it to Mr. Chips which is what her Snhauzner's name was when she was a little girl.

So I asked if they'd seen either of the

"Goodbye, Mr. Chips" movies.

Most had not. I recommended both to them.

The first from 1939 is...

...and the second thirty years later
is from 1969, which is a musical.

It has the wonderful song:

I highly recommend both of them!

We're ending the movies about
baseball for July with
the 1942
"Pride of the Yankees"
about Lou Gehrig
who died in 1941
of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, [ALS] an incurable neuromuscular illness; it is now commonly referred to in North America as
 "Lou Gehrig's disease".

" Henry Louis Gehrig (born Heinrich Ludwig Gehrig;[1] June 19, 1903 – June 2, 1941) was an American professional baseball first baseman who played 17 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the New York Yankees (1923–1939).

Gehrig's consecutive game streak ended on May 2, 1939, when he voluntarily took himself out of the lineup, stunning both players and fans, after his performance on the field became hampered by an undiagnosed ailment subsequently confirmed to be amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, an incurable neuromuscular illness; it is now commonly referred to in North America as "Lou Gehrig's disease".[10]

The disease forced him to retire at age 36, and claimed his life two years later. The pathos of his farewell from baseball was capped off by his iconic 1939 "Luckiest Man on the Face of the Earth" speech at Yankee Stadium

In 1969, the Baseball Writers' Association of America voted Gehrig the greatest first baseman of all time,[11] and he was the leading vote-getter on the MLB All-Century Team chosen by fans in 1999.[12] A monument in Gehrig's honor, originally dedicated by the Yankees in 1941, currently resides in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium. The Lou Gehrig Memorial Award is given annually to the MLB player who best exhibits Gehrig's integrity and character.' --wikipedia

I liked this from a list of quotes that changed history:

"I hold the sun to be situated motionless in the center of the revolution of the celestial orbs while the earth rotates on its axis and revolves about the sun.
— Galileo Galilei

Heliocentrism — the idea that the Earth and planets revolve around the sun at the center of the  universe— had been around since the ancient Greeks. But it was Galileo who first provided proof using a telescope. In 1615, he was investigated by the Roman Inquisition of the Catholic Church for his supposedly heretical beliefs, and spent part of his life under house arrest. Today, he is considered the father of observational astronomy, modern physics, and the scientific method.

*** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** ***   Tonight I was able to pull up Walt's Missionary Journal with the right margin adjusted so I could see a whole line to continue typing. I'm on page 10 of 192.

There are  164 days till Christmas. So I better get crackin' if I'm going to have it
typed by then for my gift to the family.

I'm on the part where Walt is still on the ship "Argentina" from New York City to Montevideo, Uruguay. They have just stopped for the day at Rio de Janeiro

[Boarded ship "Argentina" in New York City on August 26 Thursday.
He will dock at Montevideo, Uruguay, on Tuesday, September 14, which makes it 19 days on board = 2 weeks 5 days.]

From Journal:
September 9, 1954   Thursday.
We docked this morning in the harbor at Rio de Janeiro. The two missionaries that are working in the city met us and spent the day with us. This city is very fabulous—just as it is known as.

The first thing that we did was take a trolley and a cog railway to the top of Mount Corcovado where there is a gigantic statue of Christ.  From there the whole area could be seen.  The hill is about 2,200 feet high.  We couldn’t take many pictures because of the fog.

Mount Corcovado
Christ the Redeemer, Portuguese Cristo Redentor, colossal statue of Jesus Christ at the summit of Mount Corcovado, Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Celebrated in traditional and popular songs, Corcovado towers over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's principal port city.
Then we went over to the Copa Cabana beach and visited with Sister Corleon from Virginia.  The beach is semi-circular and a few miles long, with the ocean on one side and modern hotels, night spots, and apartment houses on the other. Someone told us those apartments rent for $150 to $200 a month!
[Normal rent would be $30-$50 or under.]
Copa Cabana Beach
in Rio de Janeiro
From the ocean inland...

In the late afternoon we went to the famous Sugar Loaf Hill and watched the sunset. It is a mountain of nearly vertical solid rock walls and we reached the top by means of a cable car supported by two large cables—very exciting and interesting.

The Sugarloaf Cable Car (PortugueseBondinho do Pão de Açúcar) is a cableway system in Rio de JaneiroBrazil. The first part runs between Praia Vermelha and Morro da Urca (at 722 feet (220 m)), from where the second rises to the summit of the 1,299-foot (396 m) Sugarloaf Mountain.

The cableway was envisioned by the engineer Augusto Ferreira Ramos in 1908 who sought support from well-known figures of Rio's high society to promote its construction. Opened in 1912,[2] it was only the third cableway to be built in the world. In 1972 the cars were updated, growing from a capacity of 22 to 75, and in 1979 it featured in an action scene for the James Bond film Moonraker. Today it is used by approximately 2,500 visitors every day. The cable cars run every 30 minutes, between 8 am and 10 pm.

Our Eternal Home

“In my Father’s house are many mansions,” Jesus taught.

President Oaks said,

“From modern revelation we know that those mansions are in three different kingdoms of glory. “

He continues,

“In the restored Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we have a unique understanding of our Heavenly Father’s plan. This gives us a different way of viewing the purpose of mortal life, the divine judgment that follows it, and the ultimate glorious destiny of all of God’s children.”

1 Corinthians 15:40

40 There are also celestial bodies, and bodies terrestrial: but the glory of the celestial is one, and the glory of the terrestrial is another.

41 There is one glory of the sun, and another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars: for one star differeth from another star in glory.

I’m grateful that our Heavenly Father has a place for all of His children. None are forgotten, none are lost. I hope and pray that all will choose to live there lives and make the covenants needed to make it to the Celestial Kingdom because that is the only place that families can be sealed together forever. I #givethanks for the family that I have.

"The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane."

At the end it all becomes clear.
So the second time, it's fun
to see how everything makes sense.
