Family is Everything…
Went to the dermatologist today. Dr. Harris froze some pre-cancerous growths from my face and arms. Then he took a biopsy of a suspicious growth on the side of my nose. I'll know in two weeks if it's cancerous or not. That was from this morning.
This afternoon: I went to the dentist. Now my teeth are turning bad on the right side of my mouth. The incisor bridge I've had since age 12 in 7th grade, has to come out because the tooth it's anchored to has a cavity and some infection going up into the gum. With one good tooth next to that, but then a gap from a pulled tooth, and a problem with a tooth below that has a cavity underneath a crown. All the repair work will
come at a very high price--$10,000.
We've never had dental insurance. Need to make some decisions soon about which teeth to pull, then implants to anchor the bridge to again because I'm in pain on both the upper and lower teeth on that right side.
Supper: Pork Chops, scalloped potatoes,
pineapple, French bread.

Tonight is movie night with Gary, but since he's been picking up Isaac from play practice (Isaac's Toad in "Frog and Toad" for their Jr. High class) and he was informed he's been exposed to Covid-19 at school and is now quarantined, Gary didn't feel he should come over tonight.
We are going to watch our last Sep movie with the theme of how Hollywood depicted death and life after... tonight is my Mom's favorite movie from the 1930's -- "Topper" with Cary Grant and Constance Bennett - 1937
It wasn't as fun watching it without Gary here to laugh with me. It was so fun watching it with Grama A because she liked it so much and laughed a lot watching it. It was so popular they did two sequels but they weren't as good without Cary Grant and Constance Bennett.
Gary, I can't remember what theme we chose for October. ?Maybe Halloween movies. Julie & John have a tradition of watching "Hocus Pocus" every October. (I'm catching this up Sunday night and we all watched it Friday night. It's the most Halloween-ish movie I've ever seen; a fun one!)

Yesterday, the Thursday before General Conference would have been a Central America Mission Presidents Reunion Dinner if it hadn't been this "pandemic shut-down" year. I sent some photos from our past reunions, along with telling those that may not have heard about Walt's passing (six weeks ago today).
Thank you for condolences received from: Scott and Janis Farrell, Elder Hugo and Sister Nuria Martinez, Lynn and Bonita Justice, Marcia Ogden, Don and Virginia Cazier, Denis and Michael Morril...

There is some interesting news today in the Twin Falls Times News about our hometown of
Wendell, Idaho - founded in 1909. In 1959 they had a 50th Year Celebration for the town. Clyde Petersen (no relation, but a friend and father of one of my class-mates) was the Chairman. The Committee chose Jane Petersen--Walt's Mom--to write a direct the Pageant for the Celebration which was on July 4, 1959. They honored those who had moved to Wendell before 1916 and had several Old Timers come whom they called the "Gold Citizens of Wendell."
ROAMING THE MAGIC VALLEY: Part 5 in a 5-part series
Go Wendell Trojans!
For many communities in the state, football is the pride and joy of the fall season. Everyone gets to see the games, but not many people are allowed to go behind the scenes and see these student athletes training for the next game.

Wendell didn’t
live up to the expectations of the founders, who dubbed it “Hub City, the town
of opportunity.” Early settlers could pay “colonist fares” on the Oregon
Shortline Railroad, where they would book space in a special immigrant car and
ride the train with their family and livestock to Wendell. Nowadays, the
economic boom of the city has dwindled, but the people who stayed serve as a
reminder of their optimistic ancestors.
Wendell, I D A H O
Population: About
2,700 in 2020. In 1934 to 1957 when Walt and I grew up in Wendell, Idaho, the population
was only about 1,300.
Incorporated: 1909
Fun Fact: Because of its centralized location between Gooding, Jerome and Hagerman, Wendell was dubbed “The Hub City” in 1909. Twin Falls tried to dispute this and claim the title of Hub City, but it was discovered that the naming of Wendell as the Hub City had been read into congressional record during Frank R. Gooding’s term as senator, so Wendell got to keep the designation.
One of my favorite photos from Wendell has to be the Magic Valley Portuguese Hall's ornate display for the Magic Valley Dairy Days Parade back in 2014. It was astonishing to see how intricate their float was.

While finishing a hike
to Pillar Falls back in May, I noticed BASE jumpers gliding down into the
canyon during golden hour. I quickly stopped and checked to see if there were
others on the bridge. Luckily, there were two more BASE jumpers ready to leap
and I snapped this image. It quickly became one of my favorites of the year.

From
the Magic Valley Dairy Days in Wendell to the Magic Valley Folk Festival in
Rupert, Nash and Sutphin bring insight from their perspective to capture the
spirit of the valley for our readers.
These
cities are the lifeblood of this area. Had early settlers not recognized the
agricultural potential of the land, there would be no Magic Valley. The
decisions they made shape who we are and pave the way for who we will become.
From
fishing to hiking, fine dining to shopping, there’s something for everyone to
enjoy. Each city offers attractions that diversify the area. If you’re looking
for adventure, all you have to do is explore.
This
installment of Roaming the Magic Valley takes us from the snow-tipped peaks of
Sun Valley to the farm fields of Rogerson. Each city [including Wendell, Idaho--our hometown] throughout this series is
unique in its own way and all contribute to the identity of the Magic Valley.
“It’s amazing to see how truly diverse the area that we cover is,” Sutphin said. “From the landscapes to the communities, each city has its own unique identity that deserves to be celebrated.”---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Julie and John have a fun tradition for October....to watch "Hocus Pocus" with their kids. When I just googled it on Wikipedia it says Disney may be working on a sequel in 2020. Who knows??? We all watched Hocus Pocus tonight.
"Hocus Pocus is a 1993 American fantasy-comedy film. The film stars Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker... The film follows a villainous comedic trio of witches from the old days of Salem who are inadvertently brought back to life by a teenage boy in Salem, Massachusetts, on Halloween night." --Info from Wikipedia

190th Semi-Annual General Conference -- I posted several quotes and photos from today's General Conference sessions, but I guess I hit a wrong key and they didn't save. I'll work on it again tomorrow.
It's always great to be uplifted by our senior Church leaders. President Russell and Sister Wendy Nelson arrive at the Conference Center Theater for the opening session of General Conference.

190th Semi-Annual General Conference
"Christianity is comforting, but it is often not comfortable. The path
to holiness and happiness here and hereafter is a long and
sometimes rocky one. It takes time and tenacity to walk it. But, of
course, the reward for doing so is
monumental.” —Elder

President
Nelson at October General Conference: Let God Prevail, Embrace the Future, Live
‘a New Normal’
Prophet
reminds Latter-day Saints that racism is “morally wrong” and contrary to God’s
plan of happiness and His purpose of the gathering
Moving forward,
embracing the future with faith, seeing turbulent times as opportunities to
thrive spiritually and choosing to let God prevail in our lives. Those were
some of the key messages shared by President Russell M. Nelson during the 190th semiannual
conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
While President
Nelson expressed joy for the opportunity and ability to gather virtually for
the conference, he also expressed sorrow to all those impacted by the ongoing
COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters and other hardships.
“Through it all our
Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, love us! They care for us,” he said.
“They and Their holy angels are watching over us.”
President Nelson
added that despite the current commotion in the world, we can look to the
future with joy as we turn to our Savior Jesus Christ.
“Let us not spin our
wheels in the memories of yesterday. The gathering of Israel moves forward. The
Lord Jesus Christ directs the affairs of His Church, and it will achieve its
divine objectives.”
Are You Willing to Let
God Prevail in Your Life?
During the Sunday morning session of the conference,
President Nelson taught about the gathering of Israel and how that is related
to our willingness to let God be the most important influence in our lives.
“The only way to
survive spiritually is to be determined to let God prevail in our lives, to
learn to hear His voice and to use our energy to help gather Israel,” he said.
During the address,
President Nelson reiterated that God loves all of his children and emphasized
that racism in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints cannot be
tolerated.
“Let me be clear,
brothers and sisters, any discrimination because of race is morally wrong and
contrary to God’s plan of happiness for His children. It is also contrary to
His very purpose of the gathering.”
As President Nelson
taught saints to see themselves participating in the gathering of God’s
children taking place right now, he issued this prophetic invitation:
“As you study your scriptures during the next six
months, I encourage you to make a list of all that the Lord has promised He
will do for covenant Israel. Ponder these promises. Talk about them with your
family and friends. Then live and watch for these promises to be fulfilled in
your own life.”
Embrace
the Future With Faith
Speaking during
the women’s session to women and
young women ages 11 and up, President Nelson expressed his love and
appreciation for all they have done to be everyday heroes during these
difficult circumstances. He also reminded them of the Lord’s promise that “if
ye are prepared, ye shall not fear” (Doctrine and Covenants 38:30) and urged all to
take steps to be more temporally, spiritually and emotionally prepared.
He shared three
principles to consider:
1. Create places of
security
2. Prepare your mind to
be faithful to God
3. Never stop preparing
President Nelson
taught, “Our ultimate security comes as we yoke ourselves to Heavenly Father
and Jesus Christ! Life without God is a life filled with fear. Life with God is
a life filled with peace.”
Live ‘a New Normal’
In his
concluding address on Sunday afternoon,
President Nelson acknowledged in today’s world we often hear the term “new
normal.” But he invited disciples of Jesus Christ to embrace “a new normal”
that includes turning one’s heart to God, repenting daily, ministering to and
serving others, keeping an eternal perspective and living each day to be better
prepared to meet God.
President Nelson announced plans to build six new temples
The prophet announced Sunday afternoon, October 4, 2020, plans to build six temples in the following locations:
A temple in Tarawa Kiribati!!!
Even though
has been home from his mission for over a year, he is overcome with emotion and joy about this announcement!!!
President Nelson ended
the conference with this blessing of peace:
“I bless you to be filled with the peace of the
Lord Jesus Christ. His peace is beyond all mortal understanding. I bless you
with an increased desire and ability to obey the laws of God.” He continued, “I
promise that as you do, you will be showered with blessings, including greater
courage, increased personal revelation, sweeter harmony in your homes and joy,
even amid uncertainty.”
