Traces of Time . . .
(To see last week's blog post--scroll down to the end of this week, then
the Week of August 5-August 11, 2019 will be there.
If it's not, hit "Older Posts." at the bottom right.)

Family is Everything…
 It's Fair Week in
Burley, Idaho
Gary and Steve are driving
us there on Saturday, Aug 17
for the last day of the Fair.
We will be staying at the
Marriott Fairfield Inn.
August 10-17, 2019
I took no photos of what we did today, and since I'm
typing this Thursday night, I can't even really remember
what we did.
TUESDAY, AUGUST 13, 2019
Family is Everything…
  Marci here...
She helps Walt start the day
on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and
Saturdays.
 Karen here...
She is a wonderful R.N.
who checks on Walt each week,
from Utah Health and Hospice.
 We went to the club house...
...to bicycle.
We biked for 20 minutes...

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 14, 2019
Family is Everything...

Gary comes each Wednesday
for "Movie Night."
We have chosen "classic movies"
to watch in August.
For tonight we watched
"High Society" from 1956
starring Grace Kelly, Bing Crosby,
Frank Sinatra, and Louis Armstrong.

We always enjoy these
Wednesday night movies
with Gary.
The two other classics we
have chosen to watch
for August are
"Casablanca" and
"Citizen Kane."
Gary has seen neither of them.

Family is Everything...
Janie helped Heidi move into her new apartment today...
Darling apartment for a darling girl...
Welcome to Utah and UVU, Heidi.
~~~
Marci helped Walt begin
his day...
Today was an additional
Saratoga Springs 3rd Ward
Lunch Bunch
Outing to the
Springville Museum of Art,
Driving with Tammy Ballard,
Linda Hartley, and Judy Dunston.
We had lunch first at Magleby's
in Springville.
So many delicious entrees
on the menu...
We could see the statue of
Mark Twain across the street.
This art piece has the famous author
sitting on a bench.
Tammy said Springville is
known as the "Art City."
We enjoyed being in this elegant
building that had once been
an art museum.
 It has walls covered with art,
and decorative painted ceilings.
  The painting on the left is of
"Doc Magleby," who started
this high-end restaurant.
On the left is Mrs. Magleby
who perfected the recipe
for this famous chocolate cake.
 I ordered the "Wonderful Halibut"
that Tammy recommended.
The gourmet food is expensive,
so this is not a place to go
for lunch when it isn't a
special occasion.
 Our special occasion today was
to gather to go to the
annual quilt exhibit at
the Springville Museum of Art.
Left to right: Judy, Tammy,
Linda, Kaye, and Eileen.
Judy needed to get back to make
sure Cliff was okay, so she was
not able to stay any longer.
We took a photo by the beautiful
glass doors out front.
Linda, Kaye, and Tammy.
 Tammy took a photo with Eileen in it.
Then we drove to this famous
Springville Museum of Art...
which Tammy describes as
one of the best kept
secrets in Utah.
Each quilt was breathtaking,
a real work of art.
This one had bling throughout it.
It received one of the special awards.
Tammy is very knowledgeable
about the different techniques
of quilting, and explained a
lot of the details to us.
 Some quilts are pieced,
some are applicaded ...
Some are hand quilted,
some are machine sewn...
all were spectacular.
I can't believe I didn't get a
photo of the one I voted
my favorite. It was a scene
by the coast of Ireland, called
Queen of Beren...
or something like that.
 I thought this piece of machinery
looked intriguing.
I don't even know what it is.
The quilt display will be there
until September 21.
It is worth the drive to
see these unique quilts.
A couple of guys from the U.K.
were coming in as we came out,
so we asked one to get a photo
of us. His accent sounded
more like an Aussie, than a Brit.
The dinosaur behind us was
interesting.
We had a great time.
Tammy, thank you for planning
this outing for us.
*** *** *** ***
We bicycled early evening tonight,
but didn't get any photos.
Walt did 20 minutes, I did 25.
FRIDAY, AUGUST 16, 2019
Family is Everything…
The only photo I took today
was our healthy breakfast:
Bacon, eggs, toast, and orange juice.
SATURDAY, AUGUST 17, 2019
Family is Everything…
 Gary and Steve drove us to
Idaho today. We first stopped
in Garland to go to the funeral
of Eli Misrasi at the
Garland Tabernacle.
Grampa Ray's brother, Stan Petersen,
lived in Garland, Utah. Uncle Stan
had Walt come and work for him
on his farms for two summers between
Walt's 5th and 6th grades...
so at age 11 and 12.
Walt bonded with
Uncle Stan and Aunt Vida and
the 5 children they had in
1945 and 1946 when Walt worked there.
Audrey 8, Beth 6, Glenn 4,
Gayle 2, and the baby...
I don't now who is older--
Lester or Jean.
Three more children joined
their family: Lareen, MaryKate,
and Karla.
Beth married Eli in 1958, and
they had two daughters--
Denise and Elizabeth.
Beth died at age 48 in 1987.
Eli was a widower for 14 years
then married Buqe in 2001.
  Eli made unique bird houses.
 Eli liked Pepsi...
they had a can of Pepsi in his
hand in his casket.
Their family tree. Eli probably made
the barn-wood frame.
Eli's family and friends paid
great tribute to him at
his funeral today.
We were blessed to be able
to be there.
His eulogy ended with...
"If he could tell you one last thing
it would be:
'Keep going 100 miles an hour
so you don't have time to get old or die.
Be safe, be healthy, be happy.' "
On the back of his funeral program were
four photos of him at different ages
with the caption:
"On the move again with places
to go and people to see...
with the windows down,
the radio up and
a Pepsi in one hand."
Here's some photos of this beautiful
Garland Tabernacle built in 1924 that
Karla took today after the funeral.
Can you believe this is in the
small town of Garland?
A closer up view of the center...
Beautiful stained class windows...
To the side...
Then Gary and Steve drove us to
Burley, I D A H O , for the
last day of the
Cassia County Fair and Rodeo.
August 10-17, 2019
We missed seeing
David and his wife Julie
who drove up yesterday for a mini-
class reunion with a few friends.
They drove back to Utah this morning.
Janie drove to Burley from Rexburg.
We rendezvoused at the Fair in
the late afternoon.
We loved going to the Cassia County Fair
every year while we were raising
our 7 precious children in Burley.
We were married June 14, 1961
in the Salt Lake Temple.
We honeymooned on our way back
to St. Louis, Missouri, where Walt
began his third year of medical school.
I worked as secretary to the
Hematologist at the Jewish Hospital
for those two years. We were in
Minneapolis one year, then
Talihina, Oklahoma two years.
When we moved back to Idaho in 1966,
we had Janie and Gary, and were
expecting Steve.
Janie was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota
on the day he began his internship just having
graduated from Washington University
School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.
Gary was born in Ft. Smith, Arkansas,
while Walt did his military duty at
the U.S. Public Health
Indian Hospital in
Talihina, Oklahoma.
Steve, David, Julie,
Brian, and Jennifer were all
born in Burley, I D A H O.
Walt was born in Wendell, Idaho,
and I was born in Twin Falls, Idaho,
even tho my Mom and Dad were
living in Wendell, she went to
a doctor in Buhl, Idaho.
My Dad--Arnold Albertson--
 was born in Jackson, Idaho,
which is in Cassia County.
His Mom was born in Salt Lake City, Utah,
and his Dad was born in Albion, Idaho.
My Mom--Verna Huffaker Albertson
 was born in Rigby, Idaho.
Her Mom, Ella Morris Huffaker,
was born in Salt Lake City, Utah,
but her Dad, Dave Huffaker was
born in Mill Creek, Idaho, near Menan.
Walt's Dad was born in Garland, Utah,
and his mother in Smithfield, Utah.
So we're Idahoans--with a little
Utahan mixed in.
It's sure good to be back in
I D A H O --
even if just for a couple of days.
And especially at the
CASSIA COUNTY FAIR and RODEO
Walt and Eileen
Janie, Gary, and Steve
Cassia County Fair
We saw lots of friends and ate
delicious food at the Fair booths.
First we got to spend some time
with our close friends,
Neal and Kenna Wyatt.
We saw them last on Dec. 15
last year when they had driven
from Burley to Saratoga Springs
for my 80th birthday open house.
That was such a fun surprise
and a great serendipity!
Kenna and I have a special pact.
We've been friends for
many years.
On our way to see the 4-H cows,
pigs, and sheep, we saw this sign.
Janie couldn't believe they actually
had "deep fried Twinkies," so
she took a photo.
Gary bought one later for us to
share, and it wasn't half bad.
Janie even forced herself to
take a tiny bite and agreed
that it wasn't so bad.
Next we saw...
June Tilley, also a good friend.
I can't remember how long
it's been since
her great husband, Jay Tilley,
passed away.
We hadn't seen Glen and
Marie Hanzel Larson since they
were married two summers ago.
 Janie just missed seeing her good
friend and BHS classmate, Corrine--
Glen's daughter--who had returned
to her home in Washington D.C.,
at noon today, after having been
at the Fair Wednesday and
Thursday.
Great friends and Burton Avenue
neighbors...D. and Karen Taylor
Friends Jeff and Joyce Kirk...
What sweet memories of them...
 As Gary said to me when he saw
Jeff: "He was our priesthood leader,
and scout leader. We loved him!"
Larry Osterhout...
 "He was the best Little League
football coach I ever had," said Gary.
Emy Peterson Darrington has
been busy planning a mini-class
reunion for some BHS
classmates. She is one of
Julie's Blueberry friends.
We always love seeing
John and Debi Craner.
Jeff Rasmussen always tells us:
"There will never be another
doctor as great as President Petersen."
Darling Amy Beck Rasmussen was a
nurse for Dr. Petersen for a while,
but chose to "retire" to be
a full-time mother.
 Two of Burley's most outstanding
and beautiful gals: Kennadee King,
and Cambree King.
 We love the King family--
President Tracy King, his
beautiful wife, Candace Wyatt King,
and their six children.
Cambree would bring Dr. Petersen
his favorite Christmas treat:
Peppermint ice cream.
President King went in to the Rodeo
and brought Kaia out to show
Walt where "Dr. Petersen" did
stitches, and there is no scar.
[Walt took care of a family once that was
in a car accident. When they got back to
Boise, the physicians there thought the
stitches had been done by a plastic surgeon.
Walt won't like me sharing this, but
he was a great physician and surgeon!]
We didn't get a photo, but
here is Kaia with Kestle on
their first day of school...
Kestle, left, is a freshman,
Kaia, right, is a senior.
Trista Williams Cook and her
parents, Garth and Sam, have been
friends for many years.
President Matt Cook also came to
talk with us, but we didn't get a
photo with him.
We know the Burley West Stake
is in great hands with
President Cook, and his
two counselors--
President Fillmore and
President Kloepfer.
President Mark Fillmore came over
to talk with us. He thanked Walt
for starting him preparing for a
mission with his wife when, Walt,
as a temple president, called to
ask him to come serve in the
San Salvador El Salvador Temple.
They ended up serving in the
Guatemala Central Mission, where
Sister Fillmore's cousin was the
mission president.
We always love seeing
President John Kloepfer and Susie.
Rick Kartchner is a friend from
the days that Walt and Newel
were pilots together.
Walt said: "Rocky, you are my
best friend."
Susan Toner is always fun
to talk to.
 It was heaven to be with so many
friends at the
 Cassia County Fair
After 5 hours at the Fair,
we drove to the Marriott Fairfield Inn
for a night of rest.
The rooms are beautiful there, and
we had the room that helped Walt
with his special needs as he uses
a walker all the time--actually
Gary and Steve took turns pushing
him in a wheelchair at the Fair so
he wouldn't take the chance of
tripping and falling on all the
uneven surfaces.
Family is Everything…
A delicious breakfast
was served at the
Fairfield Inn & Suites
by Marriott this morning.
Here's Steve and Walt.
Here's Gary and Eileen.
 We recommend the
Fairfield Inn & Suites
by Marriott
in Burley for a
wonderful place to stay!
Thanks, Dr. Joe and Linda Petersen,
for building such a great Marriott
here in Burley!
We went to the Burley 3rd Ward
of the Burley Idaho West Stake...
the ward we belonged to for many years.
We actually met in this ward building for
the 52 years that we lived in Burley,
however, it went from being 7
when the boundaries were changed.
Walt was bishop of
the Burley 7th Ward
from May 1970 to March 1976.
He was then on the Burley Stake
High Council from April 1976 to
December 1981 when he was called
as a counselor in the
Burley Stake Presidency,
serving with President William Matthews,
and first counselor, Earl Carlson.
When the stake was divided into the
Burley Stake and
the Burley West Stake
in May 1983,
by Elder Mark E. Petersen,
Walt was called as the first stake
president of this new stake.
Boyd Poulton was called as the
president of the Burley Stake.
(We went to see Pres. Poulton in
May at the Assisted Living
in Orem.  He looked great.)
Walt served from May 1983 to Nov 1992.
Paul Young was called as the stake
president in Nov 1992.
In February 1993, Walt was called
as a Spanish Speaking Patriarch
of the Twin Falls/Burley/Rupert/
Paul/Declo/Jerome/Wendell Area.
In December 1994 he was
called on the telephone
by President Hinckley
to be a mission president.
In March 1995 he received his
official written call to be the
president of the MĆ©xico MĆ©rida Mission,
to serve from July 1995 to July 1998.
(Little did we know then that we would
later serve three more missions
together: two medical missions, first
the 7 countries of Central America;
then Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay;
then temple president and temple matron
of the new San Salvador El Salvador Temple
in 2011 to 2014.)
Well, there's a walk down memory lane...
~~~ ~~~ ~~~
...back to today in Burley Third Ward,
George and Jacque Gorton reported
their mission to Martin's Cove.
Elder and Sister Gorton were called to
the Wyoming Mormon Trail Mission
at Martin's Cove
 to serve for 6 months.
However, their mission president
asked them to serve longer and
in total they served 16 months.
It is now officially called the:
Wyoming Mormon Trail Mission...
I think Sister Gorton says it has
a new name now...
 We then saw Elden (just turned 94)
and Picola Wood
coming to their 7th Ward
Sacrament Meeting. They just
celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.
We also saw Rollo and Gladys Harrison,
but didn't get a chance to take
a photo with them.
All dear friends who were in 7th Ward
when Walt was bishop there.
 In Gospel Doctrine class,
Michael Hill gave an interesting
lesson from Come, Follow Me
Romans 7-16:
"Overcome Evil with Good."
Steve observed that Bro. Hill
led an excellent discussion by
using skilled teaching techniques...
namely, he asked great questions,
and thanked each person for
their comment. Then he used
"weaving" by tying in a previous
comment by someone into a
later point.
(Steve did research for ten years
and has written a book titled
When All Have Spoken which shares
insights into how to teach without
just "lecturing" but by bringing
out meaningful discussion from
many members of the class.)

After church...The "frosting on the cake" of our
trip to Burley was being invited by
Ruth Melling to have Sunday
dinner with them. Her granddaughter,
Janelle, is putting finishing touches...
Ruth always sets a beautiful table.
As Gary said to her: "I realize--
now living alone--what a wonderful
thing a Sunday roast beef dinner is!"
Serving 12 for dinner is something Ruth has perfected!
She and Don have always been so generous and kind
and truly are the elect of God!
Thank you, Ruth, John, Marielle,
and Janelle
for the delicious dinner and the
grand company and conversation!
What a darling family! John and Marielle, Janelle,
Don, William, Brinley, and David Melling.
The book Peace Amidst the Mayhem that Marielle
has just written will be available
on Amazon soon.
Checking to see which photo turned out best...
or this one....
The proud Grandmother--Ruth Melling, has
31 grandchildren.
What dear friends they are to us!
We were neighbors to the
Mellings for 46 years!~
Our kids--Janie, Gary, Steve, David,
Julie, Brian, and Jen
grew up with their kids:
Kaye, David, Scott,
Kirt, JaNaĆ©, and John.
 *** *** ***
We are so thankful for The Plan of Salvation
and the Atonement of  Jesus Christ
that makes this Great Plan operational.
At the end of this August 18th,
we pray you have had a
restful , peaceful, and spiritual
Sabbath Day...

We share these truths as our testimony to you...

Heavenly Father lives and knows us each by name. He loves us and wants us to return to Him and Heavenly Mother when we leave this mortal existence.  He loves us just as we are at this very moment.
*** *** ***
Jesus Christ came to earth as The Only Begotten of the Father and fulfilled the Atonement. He is the Redeemer of all.
*** *** ***
Joseph Smith was foreordained to be the Prophet of the Restoration.  He is the Restorer of all things.
*** *** ***
President Russell M. Nelson is the Living Prophet today for all the world.
*** *** ***
The Bible is "the Word of God as far as it is translated correctly" and is a Testament of the Divinity of Jesus Christ.
*** *** ***
The Book of Mormon is the Word of God and is Another Testament of Jesus Christ. It is the most correct book of any book on earth.
*** *** ***
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the True Church on the earth today.
*** *** ***
Of these truths we testify in the Name of Jesus Christ, amen.
