The gathering in
Rome — a significant city in the history of the world
and in the history of
Christianity — marked the first time in Church
history that every member
of the First Presidency and the Quorum of
the Twelve Apostles had
been all together outside the United States.
Every senior leader also
participated in the Rome Italy Temple
dedication.
“More than 2,000 years
ago, our Savior Jesus Christ ministered to the
world, establishing His
Church and His gospel,” wrote President
Russell M. Nelson in a
Facebook post sharing the photograph.
“He called Apostles and
gave them the decree to ‘go ye therefore, and
teach all nations.’
“In our day, the Lord’s Church has been restored. The Savior
stands
at the head of The Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As
modern-day Apostles of
Jesus Christ, the message we share today
is the same message that
Apostles shared long ago — that God
lives and that Jesus is
the Christ.”
Photographers captured two versions of the historic photograph.
In the first photograph, the
senior leadership of the Church wore
street clothes; in a
second version, they wore white temple clothing,
a symbol of purity,
worthiness and cleanliness in Latter-day
Saint temples.
An additional photograph of President Russell M. Nelson was taken
in front of the statue of
Peter. The keys held in
Peter’s hand are
symbolic of Matthew 16:19, where Christ
promised Peter,
“I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom
of heaven: and
whatsoever thou shalt
bind on earth shall be bound in heaven:
and whatsoever thou shalt
loose on earth shall be loosed in
heaven.” Thorvaldsen, a
Danish sculptor born in 1770, was
accepted into the Royal
Danish Academy of Art and later
studied in Rome. He died
in 1844 — the same year as
Joseph Smith.
In the moments before and after the photograph, the senior Church
leaders
displayed an obvious
connection of energetic unity and friendship as they
greeted and interacted
together. All expressed deep gratitude for the invitation
President Nelson gave
them to participate in the historic events surrounding
the dedication of the
Rome temple.
President Nelson said the Lord told him to take the entire First
Presidency
and Quorum of the Twelve
Apostles to Rome for the dedication. “I was just
following the
instructions I received,” he said. “It was very clear to me.”
Elder Jeffrey R Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles said
it is
unprecedented for the
First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
to be together “in such a
remarkable setting for such a splendid reason.”
There are only a few times in history when the entire senior
leadership of
the Church have been
together outside of Utah, the most recent being the
Nauvoo Illinois Temple
dedication in 2002.
Being together “is a remarkable and historic moment that touches
our
hearts deeply,” said
Elder Ulisses Soares, joining other fellow members
of the Quorum of the
Twelve Apostles in commenting on the experience.
Elder Ronald A. Rasband said he is “enjoying every minute of this
precious
experience.”
Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf said a living prophet and living Apostles
have the
same call as Apostles did
anciently, “to proclaim the gospel to all the world,”
adding, “we are here with
the prophet to do just that in our modern times.”
Elder Dale G. Renlund added: “We know that two former-day
Apostles, Peter
and Paul, were here, and
then to have modern-day Apostles here, all of us, is
just a moving experience, in some ways paying
homage to them and homage
to the gospel that we all
preach.”

"On March 11, 1989, Tim Berners-Lee, a British computer
programmer working at CERN, the European Particle Physics Laboratory, sent
in a proposal for an information management system.
His boss responded with a note that read "vague but exciting."
That proposal was the first sketch of what would become the
World Wide Web, creating the system that functions on the internet today.
But on the 30th anniversary of his breakthrough invention,
Berners-Lee shared a warning about the "sources of dysfunction" the
web faces and how "the fight for the web is one of the most important
causes of our time."
In an open letter published Tuesday, he wrote
about the consequences of the growing division that his invention has fueled.
'Of course with every new feature, every new website, the
divide between those who are online and those who are not increases, making it
all the more imperative to make the web available for everyone,' he wrote
in the letter."

More historic news from Rome:
VIDEO: Apostles Testify of Jesus Christ in Rome
As special witnesses to the world of the divinity of Jesus Christ, the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints shared their testimony of Christ by recording excerpts from the original document, “The Living Christ: The Testimony of the Apostles.” Originally published on January 1, 2000, the document commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ two thousand years ago.
The video recording begins with the most recently called apostle, Elder Ulisses Soares, and then continues in sequence of seniority. The video concludes with Church President Russell M. Nelson.
The video recording was set on the grounds of and inside the Rome Italy Temple. The temple was dedicated in seven sessions over a period of three days, beginning Sunday, March 10, and concluding Tuesday evening. Members of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles participated in the dedicatory services. It is believed to be the first time in Church history that all 15 leaders have gathered in one location outside the United States.
Members of the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles in the video include (in order of appearance): Elder Ulisses Soares; Elder Gerrit W. Gong; Elder Dale G. Renlund; Elder Gary E. Stevenson; Elder Ronald A. Rasband; Elder Neil L. Andersen; Elder D. Todd Christofferson; Elder Quentin L. Cook; Elder David A. Bednar; Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf; Elder Jeffrey R. Holland; President M. Russell Ballard; President Henry B. Eyring; President Dallin H. Oaks; and President Russell M. Nelson.

Why President Nelson took all Latter-day Saint apostles to Rome, and what they said about it

Our great colleague, Tad Walsh, of the Deseret News was standing side-by-side with us in Rome. The following article of his is extremely important reading to give insight and understanding into the recent unprecedented gathering of the Apostles in Rome. Read the entire article here.
ROME — Gasps have frequently followed announcements made by President Russell M. Nelson during his vigorous 14 months as prophet-leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Several months ago, it was the rest of the church’s First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles who found themselves gasping in their regular Thursday meeting in the Salt Lake Temple.
That’s where President Nelson issued an unprecedented assignment to all 14 of them to join him this week at the dedication of the Rome Italy Temple. That had never happened before outside the United States.
“We’d never heard of anything where all were present in that way,” said Elder D. Todd Christofferson, who is completing his 11th year as an apostle.
In fact, a church president has taken all the apostles with him just twice in 62 years — and never once outside the United States.
“It was an absolute delight,” Elder Jeffrey R. Holland said. “I don’t think any of us anticipated that happening.”
The question many people have asked is, why now? And why Rome, aside from the fact the apostles all expressed a kinship with Peter and Paul, who tradition says preached in the Eternal City.

Groundbreaking Held for Pocatello Idaho Temple
POCATELLO, Idaho (KUTV) — Efforts to build a new temple for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Pocatello, Idaho are now underway.
LDS Church leaders held an official groundbreaking ceremony Saturday morning.
Unlike the new LDS temple in Rome, no members of the First Presidency or Quorum of the Twelve Apostles were present for Saturday's groundbreaking.
Instead, Elder Wilford W. Andersen of the Seventy presided at the ceremony, offering the dedicatory prayer.
Two other members of the Seventy were present, Elder S. Gifford Nielsen of the Seventy and Elder Brian K. Taylor.
Attendance was by invitation only, but the ceremony was streamed to LDS meetinghouses in the Pocatello area.
The temple's construction is expected to take between two and three years. [Mar 2021 or 2022]
Artists renderings of what the temple is expected to look like can be seen in our gallery above [below here].
The building is planned to be a three-story, 67,696-square-foot temple with a center spire.
LDS Church leaders say the temple will serve 64,000 Latter-day Saints in southern Idaho.
The Pocatello temple will be the sixth LDS temple in Idaho.
The Pocatello Idaho Temple will
be the Church’s sixth temple in the Gem State. The Church currently has 162
operating temples worldwide, with another 40 announced or under construction.

A FULL MOON ON THE EQUINOX
For the first time in nearly 40 years, the spring equinox will occur on the same day as March’s Full Worm Moon. The last time that these two events landed on the same date was on March 20, 1981, though they did come close again in March 2000, separated by a span of only four hours.
But that’s not all: March’s full Moon will also be a supermoon, meaning that it will be slightly larger and brighter than most of the other full Moons this year.
WHAT DOES THE EQUINOX MEAN?
The word equinox comes from the Latin words for “equal night”—aequus (equal) and nox (night).
On the equinox, the length of day and night is nearly equal in all parts of the world.
With the equinox, enjoy the increasing sunlight hours, with earlier dawns and later sunsets. See your personalized Sun rise and set calculator.
Image: On the equinox, Earth’s two hemispheres are receiving the Sun’s rays about equally.
WHAT HAPPENS ON THE MARCH EQUINOX?
On the March Equinox, the Sun crosses the celestial equator from south to north. It’s called the “celestial equator” because it’s an imaginary line in the sky above the Earth’s equator.
If you were standing on the equator, the Sun would pass directly overhead on its way north.
Equinoxes are the only two times a year that Sun only rises due east and sets due west for all of us on Earth!
While the Sun passes overhead, the tilt of the Earth is zero relative to the Sun, which means that Earth’s axis neither points toward nor away from the Sun. (Note, however, that the Earth never orbits upright, but is always tilted on its axis by about 23.5 degrees.)
After the Spring equinox, the Norther Hemisphere tilts toward the Sun, which is why we start to get longer, sunnier days

SPRING EQUINOX FAQS
Q: IS THE FIRST DAY OF SPRING ALWAYS MARCH 20?
A: No, it’s not always March 20. And your answer also depends on your definition of the “first day of spring.” Both are accurate; they’re just from different perspectives. We’ll explain …
Astronomically speaking, the first day of spring is marked by the spring equinox, which falls on March 19, 20, or 21 every year. The equinox happens at the same moment worldwide, though our clock times reflect a different time zone. And, as mentioned above, this date only signals spring’s beginning in the Northern Hemisphere; it announces fall’s arrival in the Southern Hemisphere.
Interestingly, due to time zone differences, there isn’t a March 21 equinox in mainland U.S. during the entire 21st century! Plus, we won’t see a March 21 in the world again until 2101.
Meteorologically speaking, the official first day of spring is March 1 (and the last is May
