Autumn
October

Monday - October 23, 2017

Today starts off with
Walt's physical therapy for his right shoulder
and right leg... neither have any strength.

We saw the Ringles--David and Diana--at physical therapy.
It was great to talk with them.
Haven't seen themqaq for a long time.
This afternoon we went home teaching to Dan Black.
He does so much good in his neighborhood.
He is always helping someone.
We also go home teaching to Jean Neibaur, our neighbor.
We love talking with Jean. She is a busy gal and
an excellent Bridge player with several groups.
Tonight was our monthly Empty Nesters'
Family Home Evening at the Fronks.
It's good to gather together with our neighbors and friends.
Ken baked delicious salmon for dinner.
Dan got a light assignment to bring butter and jam.
He brought delicious homemade jam that he had made.
Bonnie always sets such a fun table.
We had part of the lesson before dinner while the fish
finished baking. They'd had it in an hour, but it didn't get done.
Bonnie explained that with our Prophet asking us to be more
diligent in studying the Book of Mormon that we were going
to have a little quiz on what we knew about the Book of Mormon.
Ken asked us some questions.
Who were Lehi and Nephi -- not the ones in the beginning,
but the ones later on?  Then about Abish,
about Mahonrimoriacamur, the Standard of Liberty,
and the Stripling Warriors.
We formed two teams and came up with the
doctrine of each of these episodes.
The fourteen able to attend were:
Front row: Walt, Bonnie & Ken; Back row: Bonnie & Ken,
Darrell and MaryAnn, Jacque and George, Scott and G'lenn.
This photo shows Eileen by Walt.
Gary McCall got called out just at the end of dinner.
Colleen is in Texas.
Just had to show this cute witch.
She seems more like the Good Witch of The Wizard of Oz
not the Wicked Witch of the West.
Cute leaf nut cups were filled with goodies.
Bonnie tried to shoo everyone out of her kitchen who
stayed to help wash and dry dishes, but the Gortons and Roskelleys
didn't scare easily.

Tuesday - October 24, 2017

Today I didn't get any photos till evening.
But we did walk at CSI, then had Institute.
I got Walt as he dashed over to get his recommend renewed,
but he missed the bishopric.
And since I didn't get a photo of the rolls I made on Monday for FHE,
I took a photo of the last part of the bread I baked from the
rest of the dough from the rolls.
And we're figuring up the final totals for our tithing settlement.
We had some draws from our retirement fund that need to
be figured in for our total income for the year.
Neither Walt nor I like bookkeeping work, so it's
one of those dreaded chores at the end of the year.

Wednesday - October 25, 2017
Today we walked at CSI
and got some photos of our friends with whom we walk...
Dad and LaRae Crane, behind Dan is Jon Anderson,
and I don't know the fellow by Jon.
Tommie Dean and Urusula Byington both had on bright pink today.
Here comes Walt walking with his walker, and the speedy
one walking behind him is Don Dean.
The last 10-15 minutes, the teacher Ro Gillette, has the group
do stretching and cool down exercises.
She is excellent at working on different muscles.
As soon as we finish, a Jr. High P.E. class starts.
Today they were doing volleyball.
(This old Burley High School gym is well used.)
It was chilly enough for
coats today...
but still sunny and nice...
Then we drove to Twin Falls...
where we did a session with Dale.
Connie's 94-year-old mother passed away Monday, Oct. 23.
Her funeral will be Monday, Oct. 30 in Rupert.
We chose to have dinner at Kentucky Fried Chicken...
Dale took dinner home to Connie and her sister
who are planning the funeral.
Hope you have all had a good day...
Can you believe that Christmas is two months from today? October 25 to December 25...

...Yet, we are thankful each day for the birth of the Savior.

And look forward to His Glorious Second Coming
as King of Kings...
We are thankful each day for
Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer...

Thursday - October 26, 2017
I didn't take any photos today.
Today Walt did physical therapy early this morning.
Then he got his weekly Vitamin B-12 injection.
His blood test early in October showed he was really low on Vitamin B-12,
so he is getting a weekly shot for a month, then will get monthly ones.

We walked at CSI, then went to Institute, Lesson #14.
(Actually it's an Adult Religion Class, not an official Institute class,
but we call it our "Institute" class.  Nancy Blauer is our outstanding teacher.)

We went out to Wal*Mart to find a nice sympathy card for our
sister-in-law, Connie, whose 94-y-o Mother passed away on Monday.
The selection of cards at Walmart was pathetic, so we
went to the Dollar Tree where they had much nicer sympathy cards,
and for much less the price.
We also ordered flowers for Elvire Esther Baker Phillips' funeral
at Reta Jane's Bloomers. Reta Jane is related to Walt through the Prescott family.
The funeral is Monday, Oct. 30 at 11am at the Rupert 7th Ward, which is
the Rupert Stake Center at 324 East 18th Street.
Connie's brother, Boyd Phillips was recently called as Bishop of that ward.

Meridian Temple

Public Open House:  21 October–11 November 2017
Dedication: November 19
Temple Address: 7345 NORTH LINDER ROAD, MERIDIAN, IDAHO

In the temple we receive an Endowment.
My favorite quote about the endowment is from Brigham Young:

Temple Endowment
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
ENDOWMENT: "a gift.”
“A Celestial Course of Instruction”
Brigham Young said:
              “Your endowment is, to receive all those ordinances in the House of the Lord which are necessary for you, after you have departed this life, to enable you to walk back to the presence of the Father, passing the angels who stand as sentinels being enabled to give them the key words, the signs and tokens, pertaining to the Holy Priesthood, and gain your eternal exaltation…”
Today we drove to Meridian and went
to the Meridian Temple Open House.
Our excellent guide was Barbara Lewis,
the Area Public Affairs Director.
She lives in the original Meridian Stake.
She said there are now 14 stakes in Meridian.
This is walking across from the stake center to the entrance of the temple.
Can see the top of the temple here.
We have just finished our tour.
Even before the dedication, there is a
sacred feeling inside the temple.
Here are some of the members of the Jay Garrett family.
Walt delivered the 42-y-o man on the left.  He would
be the grandson of Jay, son of Gale.
This is just leaving the reception area after the temple tour.
Looking northwest of the temple (I think).
Here is Jay Garrett's son, Gale, who has recently retired.
They still live in Burley.
The reflecting pond on the temple grounds.
A nice, young man volunteered to take our photo together.
Walking back to the stake center from the temple.
Looking up at the Angel Moroni from the side of the temple.
We enjoyed our visit with my Aunt Eleanor Huffaker Harmon.
She has lived at the Salmon Creek Retirement Center since April 2015.
She said she misses her home but doesn't miss having to cook.
And she knows she couldn't keep her acre and a half lawns up
now at her home on Cloverdale Road.
Eleanor said she had found a kindred-spirit best friend there,
but Twila was diagnosed with cancer recently and
was gone within a month.
Wish I had taken a photo of Eleanor in front
of the wall of wonderful shelves
that her daughter Barbara, and Barbara's husband, Frank, put up for
Eleanor to put many of her beautiful and treasured souvenirs that
Eleanor gathered throughout the world as she was tour guide
for so many groups over the years for their Harmon Travel Agency.
Eleanor said her last tour was to the Antarctic, which Earl also
wanted to go on and he loved it.
She told us that she has one place left on her bucket list:
"To take the cruise from Great Britain to the
top of Norway to see the day that never goes
dark for the whole 24 hours--the Solstice on June 21."
Then she added, "I don't think that is going to happen,
so I think I'll just x it off my bucket list."
The shelves are all along that back wall to
the right of this photo.
My Mom's youngest sister is only 8 years older than I am.
My Mom was born in 1920, her next sister Lorraine was born in 1925,
and Eleanor was born in 1930, so my Mom, Verna, her sister,
was ten years older than Eleanor was.
(Their three brothers--Morris, David, and Don,
were born in 1916, 1918, and 1928. Don lives
in Holiday and turned 89 on Oct. 1st.)
My Mom eloped at the start of her senior year, and I was
born almost a year and a half later,
just before my Mom turned 19.
Eleanor walked us out front,
and I had her pose by the Autumn scarecrow.
Eleanor is in good health. She uses a walker
occasionally if she has to walk from one end
of the retirement center to the other because
she said her back would start hurting too much
for her to keep walking on her own.
She's started writing her life story and is to the 1950s.
She was born March 30, 1930.
She graduated from Wendell High School in  1948.
She went to BYU for one year and
Link's Business College in Twin Falls.
Eleanor married Earl Harmon on November 25, 1949
at her parent's home on the Wendell farm.
She and Earl were sealed September 8, 1950
in the Idaho Falls Temple.
They have 7 children, 22 grandchildren
 and 48 or 49 great-grandchildren.
Barbara and Frank's son, Taylor Youngstrom and his wife are
expecting twins in December.
We were leaving at 5:25. Eleanor invited us to stay for their 5:30 supper,
but we wanted to try to be home before dark.
We only got half-way home before dark and it was hard driving
through the close two-way traffic in the Interstate construction
between  Twin Falls and Burley.
but it it was well worth the trip!
Eleanor agrees with Janice that we should have a
HUFFAKER FAMILY REUNION.
Eleanor says she has even lost track of Lorraine's kids
who a lot of the ten live in and/or around Caldwell.
Ray and Lorraine have a lot of grandchildren
and probably over 100 great-grandchildren.
How about a Huffaker Reunion for 2018??
Today is the Primary Program
The Burley 3rd Ward primary children and teachers
gave an outstanding program today.
I said to Walt: "This was a cut above the
normal primary program.
He responded: "...or two cuts above!"
As, Cindy Young, our primary president said in
her closing comments and testimony:
"The Spirit is very strong today.
I'm so thankful for these valiant primary children
and their primary teachers,
our pianist, Sister Heiner [Christine Willich Heiner],
and our chorister, Sister Jones [Brianna Call Jones].
It was touching to see our Bishop able to sit by
his wife, Michelle. And to see our stake president
sit by his wife, Bonnie.
(I was obedient and didn't take a photo during
the Sacrament Meeting.  But I did take a couple
after the meeting ended.  I was not in the chapel
but in the space between the chapel and the cultural hall.)
.
There were many grandparents
who came to our ward today.
Christine Heiner was the wonderful
accompanist for the Primary Program today.
Walt is greeted by a friend.
Karen Taylor taught our Relief Society lesson today.
Lisa Parrish talked with Karen after the lesson.
We went to the Viewing for Connie's Mom at the Joel Heward Hansen Mortuary in Rupert 6-8pm Sunday evening.
There was a peaceful feeling there.  A lot of people love and admire Connie, her siblings, and her Mom & Dad.
Elvire Esther Baker Phillips
August 31, 1923 – October 23, 2017
Elvire Esther Baker Phillips 94, of Rupert, ID passed away October 23, 2017 in Burley, Idaho at Park View Care Center of natural causes.
Esther was born August 31, 1923 in Ogden, UT. She was lovingly raised by her parents Henry and Augusta Baker in Rupert, ID. She was welcomed into the family by two older brothers Wallace and Morris Baker. She attended Pioneer School and graduated from Rupert High School.
On November 27, 1944, she married her sweetheart Floyd Phillips in the Salt Lake City Temple in Salt Lake City, UT. They made their home in the Rupert area. To this union were born six children: Connie (Dale) Petersen of Twin Falls, ID, Ronn Phillips (Nancy) of San Marcos, TX, Rilda Lindsey of Shelley, ID, Renae (Kevin) Thornton of Chandler, AZ, David Phillips (Lorna) of Paul, ID and Boyd Phillips (Jean) of Rupert, ID.
Esther was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served as Stake Primary President for many years and many other positions. She served a mission with her husband to the Little Rock Arkansas Mission. They also served a mission in the LDS Employment Center in Burley, ID.
She loved to garden and had beautiful house plants. She loved to read and spending time with her grandchildren. As a result of her husband’s business, they traveled to many island resorts.
She was a devoted wife and mother. She was a friend to many.
Esther is survived by her six children, 32 living grandchildren and 77 great grandchildren.
Bottom of Form
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two brothers, two grandsons, Mathew Petersen and Mark Petersen, two great grandsons, Phillip Rich, Jayden Petersen and two sons-in-laws, Alan Petersen and Ray Lindsey.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday October 30, 2017 at the Rupert 7th Ward, Rupert Stake Center, 324 East 18th St. Rupert, ID with Bishop Boyd Phillips officiating. Gathering for family and friends will be held from 6-8:00 p.m. Sunday, October 29, 2017 at the Mortuary. Services will conclude with burial in the Rupert Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Joel Heward Hansen Mortuary.
A Special thanks to the Park View Care Center for the loving care that was given to our Mother and Grandmother in her final year.
It was so precious to see Esther's wedding dress.
I wish I had gotten a closer photo of their wedding picture.
At the far left are some shoes Esther had as a child.
Many friends and neighbors came.
Brothers, Dale and Walt had some time to visit.
It was a precious time for all six children
of Floyd and Esther Phillips to be together.
Connie and her brother, Ronn,
greet another friend.
Esther's casket and flowers are beautiful.
Esther leaves a loving memory.
Connie said gathering the 125 photos
took a long time, but it is worth it
to have this video of Esther and Floyd's
life's highlights.
A special quilt with all the family names.
Renae at the beginning of the line...
David and Boyd, I think.
Boyd has recently been called as a Bishop.
He will be conducting his Mother's funeral
on Monday, October 30th.
Many friends and family signed the family book.
We pray you have had a peaceful and restful Sabbath Day.
We share our testimony...
Heavenly Father lives and loves each one of us.
Jesus Christ is His Beloved Son, who also knows and loves each one of us.
   Because of His Atonement we will all be resurrected.
      Connie and her siblings and all her family will see their mother again, as well as their father, who are now reunited eternally.
The Prophet Joseph Smith restored the Gospel of Jesus Christ in its fullness once more to the earth for these latter days.
     Temple priesthood ordinances were also restored which brought back the sealing power so that all families so sealed have the hope and promise of being a family together forever.
Thomas S. Monson is the living prophet today for the entire world.
 The Book of Mormon is a companion to the Bible and is Another Testament of Jesus Christ.
Of these truths we testify.
In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
Walt and Eileen Petersen - Burley, Idaho
