Traces of Time . . .             {Last week: Scroll to end and click "Older Posts" at bottom right.} On this blog I share with family and friends my daily thoughts, doings, what interests me, and--at times--tributes to my eternal sweetheart, Walt, who graduated to heaven on 8-21-2020.

Dedicated to our seven children--Janie, Gary, Steve, David, Julie, Brian, Jen, their spouses, our 39 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and posterity to come.

Family is Everything...
Sunrise: 7:30 a.m.
Sunset:  5:53 p.m.
On February 6, 1982 my
Dad died from colon cancer .
Arnold G. Albertson
Born Dec 12, 1912 in
Jackson, Cassia County, Idaho
The Jackson Bridge was
finished in June 1916 when
he was 4 years old.
My Dad - 1933 age 21
in Hagerman, Idaho
We have no younger photos
of him because all the
family photos were burned
when their little home in
Hagerman burned down.
He was 17 years old and
 built another home
on that country spot for his
divorced mother,
Blanche Hartwell Albertson.
He was the oldest of her
eight children.
In 1927 when the home
was destroyed by fire,
the children would have been:
Arnold 15, Warren 12,
Dean 10, Tom 8, June 7,
Lorene 5, Edna 3, and baby Jack 1.
My Dad worked for the
CCC's in the 1930s in the
Sawtooth Mountains. He was
actually the cook for the crew.
The earnings he sent home to
his mother helped her feed
her family during the Depression.

 The CCC in Idaho

On an evening in March 1933, newly elected President Franklin D. Roosevelt sat at a table in Washington D.C. surrounded by some of his new cabinet secretaries and drew a simple diagram on a scrap of paper for a visionary plan to rebuild lives and restore blighted natural resources. In a few strokes, he laid out what was to evolve into the most popular and widely dispersed of the New Deal programs: The Civilian Conservation Corps.

The nation was facing the worst economic crisis in American history. One in four wage earners were unemployed, and hundreds of thousands of men of all ages had taken to the road in search of work. Four years after the 1929 crash, the commodity-driven economies of rural America were at a standstill, revealing the crushing human cost of the worse economic depression in modern memory.

It all happened very quickly. The first CCC camp in Idaho was in operation two months later, on June 6, 1933. Camp Prichard, located on the North Fork of the Clearwater River, was the first installment on what grew to 87,000 enrollees assigned to hundreds of Idaho camps over the program’s lifetime.

My Dad Sept 1937, age 24,
just before he eloped
to marry his girl,
Verna Huffaker, age 17.
My Dad - Summer 1942 age 29
in Long Beach, California
where he worked in the
Ship Yards during
World War II

My Dad 1946 age 34
We had moved back to Wendell,
Idaho in Sep 1945 at the end
of WWII. Mom loved California,
but it was already too much
traffic for Dad.
My Dad - June 1957 drove me
to start Business College
in Salt Lake City.

My Dad and Mom were sealed in
the Salt Lake Temple June 14, 1961
the day Walt and I were married.
He hadn been baptized
July 30, 1954 when I
was age 15. They had been
married 17 years when Dad
surprised Mom by taking
missionary lessons on Monday
night when she was at Mutual
as the president.
 My Dad, age 49 in
June 1982.
We had driven from St. Louis
to Gooding and Wendell, Idaho
for a two-week visit with
family after Walt's 3rd year
of medical school and our
1-year anniversary.
My Dad with Mom, me,
and Janice at his Mom's
funeral in July 1966 in
Hagerman. Blanche Ilene
Hartwell Albertson had a stroke
in the Spring of 1963...
...and had been living with her
son Warren and his wife Vida
 in Pocatello.
She was age 72.
My Dad on right, in
1970's was head maintenance
man at Tupperware in
Jerome, Idaho.
He drove 20 miles each way
to work for several years.
He retired in 1981.
My Dad collected antiques and
was going to have a shop in
this old honey house called
"Arnold's Antiques."
My Dad bought this home in
Gooding, Idaho June 1961
which was a 2 bed-room,
1 bathroom tiny edifice. He spent
the next 20 years building on to it,
more than doubling or
tripling its size and made it
a wonderful home for Mom.
My Mom by Dad's grave.
She was a widow for 31 years.
They are now buried side by side
in the Wendell Idaho Cemetery.
Their children's names on
the back of their headstone.
My Dad was a kind, honest,
hard-working man.
A great husband and father.
I look  forward to being
with him again in the
Resurrection.
I'm thankful to our Savior,
Jesus Christ, for making
this possible.
Back to the present...

Sorry, Brian, I still
can't do it right.
Dr. Jordan Harris is

I was relieved it
didn't snow as much
as was forecast.
I had just enough time to
go thru McD's for lunch before
my 1:30 appointment at
Discount Tire west of Walmart.
I got one more new tire
to match the other three
new ones John had me buy Sat
when he took my 2005 Cadillac
in with the back-left flat tire.
Well, he had me buy two, and
Discount Tire threw in a
third new one.

I also got diabetic syringes,
low-dose aspirin, milk,
Country French bread,
 bananas, Depends,
Charmin, Kleenix, and
had my hearing aids
cleaned at Costco.
After getting my Rx of
Freestyle Lite Test Strips to
check blood sugar level,
along with a few other
goodies at Smith's, I waited in
a 20-min line at Quick Quack
to get the car washed.
Got home at 4:45.
No snow stayed on roads
or the lawns.

Saw this quote from a genius:

I live in that solitude which is painful in youth, but delicious in the years of maturity.
— Albert Einstein

Albert Einstein (/ˈnstn/ EYEN-styne;[6] German: [ˈalbɛʁt ˈʔaɪnʃtaɪn] (listen); 14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) was a German-born theoretical physicist,[7] widely acknowledged to be one of the greatest and most influential physicists of all time. Einstein is best known for developing the theory of relativity, but he also made important contributions to the development of the theory of quantum mechanics. Relativity and quantum mechanics are the two pillars of modern physics.[3][8] His mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc2, which arises from relativity theory, has been dubbed "the world's most famous equation".[9] His work is also known for its influence on the philosophy of science.[10][11] He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics "for his services to theoretical physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect",[12] a pivotal step in the development of quantum theory. His intellectual achievements and originality resulted in "Einstein" becoming synonymous with "genius".[13] Einsteinium, one of the synthetic elements in the periodic table, was named in his honor.[14]

My sister, Janice, is my only

sibling and is 10 1/2 years younger

than I am.

I just found out at 9:00 o'clock tonight

that my sister, Janice, had a small stroke.

Her youngest son, Michael, has been with

her the last 4 hours.

Her blood pressure was 216/80
Mike texted that it's staying at 185 now.

She's had two other small strokes, the

last one was on the day she retired in

January 2015.

--time out--

Janice just called me from the hospital --

10:07 p.m. She said she was still in the

E.R. waiting for them to get a bed ready.

She said Mike had finally been able to go

home after the CT scan and MRI were

finised--which confirmed it was

a small stroke caused from her blood

pressure going so high it squeezed off a

blood vessel. Jeff has been with her the

 whole time.

She continued: At noon she got dizzy.

When she got up from a short nap she

couldn't steady herself because of the

continued dizziness.

By 3:00 it wasn't getting any better, but it

was a different presentation than her first

two strokes. Mainly, she was dizzy.

Her son, Mike, came to be with her in the

hospital.

This photo is at D.A.Davidson where she

worked with investments for several years.

Dec 24, 2013, 3 months after her first

 stroke in Sep 2013.

I was so happy to have a sister and not be

an only child anymore.

1957 - in front of our home in

Wendell, Idaho. I was home from

Henager's Business College in

Saltg Lake City for Labor Day

weekend. In November they

moved to Gooding where

Mom had gotten a job at

the South Idaho Production

Credit Association.

Janice graduated from Gooding High

School in 1967.

She married, had four

wonderful children, and

now has 11 grandchildren,

and any day her 5th g-grandchild

is due.

Thanksgiving together 2018

She got to come home from

the hospital Sunday morning.

Mike & Candace and family

went to see her Monday.

Her dizziness is subsiding,

but she is still weak.

I love my sister. I'm thankful

she is recovering from this stroke.

Here's the fb post today from

my sister's son, Mike.

My sweet mother had a stroke yesterday and

will be in the hospital for neurological tests for

a day or two. Love, thoughts, and prayers

appreciated. Love you mom

Michael took this photo of  his Mom being

taken to the MRI unit to confirm the dx of a

mini-stroke,

I talked with my sister this

afternoon. She's still dizzy so they

are keeping her in the hospital for

another day and plan to send her

home with a walker because

of the possibility of her falling.

Steve & Natalie and Jen & Jerry are big

fans already. Now our son, David, has

 decided to watch

"The Chosen" after reading this review

from the Salt Lake Tribune:

Gordon Monson: The best Jesus film? Here’s why I choose ‘The Chosen.’

Actor Jonathan Roumie’s Redeemer is “smart, benevolent, hardworking, understanding, loving, forgiving. He is exactly what you desire a Savior to be.”

(The Chosen) Jesus (Jonathan Roumie) and Simon the Zealot (Alaa Safi) feed the 5,000 in a scene of Season Three of "The Chosen." Salt Lake Tribune columnist Gordon Monson says Roumie's depiction of Christ hits all the right notes.

By Gordon Monson

   | Feb. 7, 2023

A disclaimer right from the jump here: Don’t know about you, but I have not liked most — read: all — modern depictions of Jesus Christ in videos and film, whether they’ve come from Latter-day Saints, other churches or straight out of Hollywood. And I’ve watched what seems like a hundred of them.

They always clank off my mind and, more importantly, my spirit, and, as a believer, I’ve found them awkward, off target and unbelievable.

Until now.

There’s one that has hit the mark in darn near as flawless a way as the Son of Man was himself.

The Jesus character in the show “The Chosen,” as portrayed by actor Jonathan Roumie, is not just what I picture Christ to be but also what I hope him to be. In attitude. In humility. In humanity. In demeanor. In divinity. In personality. In power. In mercy. In fortitude. In sense of place. In sense of humor

It’s perfect.

(Brandon Thibodeaux | The New York Times) Jonathan Roumie, center, who plays Jesus on "The Chosen," during filming in Midlothian, Texas, in June 2022. Salt Lake Tribune columnist Gordon Monson says Roumie's depiction of Christ hits all the right notes.

The rest of the show — I’m powering through Season Two as I write this — is darn good, too. The representations of Christ followers Mary Magdalene, Simon, Matthew, John, James on down the line, as well as other biblical figures, such as Nicodemus and those who were favored or not favored by Christ’s teachings and miracles, are engaging as well.

The whole thing is fun to watch. And if I’m going to get all personal here, and be completely forthright and transparent in what I’ve experienced with this show, I’ll go ahead and reveal that I’ve even felt the spirit — gotten chills, if you’re a nonbeliever and have no clue what that phrase is supposed to mean — as I’ve watched and absorbed the episodes.

Maybe I’m one of the last around here to this party. I know “The Chosen” — now airing its third season — has been and is extremely popular in Utah, especially since some of the scenes were filmed in the state, captured at the outdoor movie set built by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints near Utah County’s Goshen. It’s kind of amusing seeing the Utah mountains in the background of scenes set in, say, Samaria, but, hey, that’s a side note.

The rest of the show hits a tone that must be appealing not just to Latter-day Saints, but Christians of all sorts, here and around the globe. The primary producer and director of the show, Dallas Jenkins, is not a Latter-day Saint and his illustrations of Christ and his disciples are not directly from a Latter-day Saint view. And that makes the show that much better. It’s offered to believers — and nonbelievers — of all kinds, of all walks of life, of all places and perspectives.

AD

Often, which is to say always, in portrayals of Christ — a pursuit that, granted, is a huge challenge, presenting a man-god in a manner that isn’t so divine, so holy, so serious, so unapproachable that he’s impossible for regular Janes and Joes to relate to — he is either too mysterious and mystical and, thereby, separate and aloof, or he’s made to look too human, too gritty, doubting himself, betraying his own connection to the God in heaven whose work he’s supposed to be accomplishing.

Roumie’s version divides the difference with a sublime touch. He makes Christ seem like an all-powerful, yet-restrained individual you not only would trust with any personal problem, with any secret or need or sin or shortcoming, but also like to sit down and watch a football game with at your favorite eatery, and maybe with whom you might want to knock back a cold beverage or two.

(AP; The Chosen) Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, left, and "The Chosen" actor Jonathan Roumie.

Speaking of football, my only reservation about Roumie is that he looks a lot like Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, which isn’t bad in and of itself, it just feels, at times, as though he should be huddling up with his receivers, running backs and offensive line, not with Andrew, Philip, Thomas and the other fishers of women and men. But that’s a minor distraction. Roumie, a devout Catholic, also recently spoke enthusiastically at an anti-abortion rally in Washington, D.C., alongside former NFL coach Tony Dungy, so take that as you will.

Either way, Roumie’s Redeemer is smart, benevolent, hardworking, understanding, loving, forgiving. He is exactly what you desire a Savior to be, but not on some highfalutin level, rather down in the dirt where all of us sinners live.

And the coolest thing about this character, this characterization, is he’s a rock star, the rock star of the New Testament, more powerful, more brilliant, more capable than all those he encounters — friends and foes alike — and still he sees no need to prove it at every turn, only at some turns. It’s impressive when he lets it all out and when he reels it in.

He heals, and he holds back. And, in between, he teaches and listens to and laughs with not only the righteous and the clean, but also — and especially — with the unrighteous and the unclean. He instructs the saints to be less sanctimonious. He’s there, as he says it, “Not to condemn the world, but to save it.”

And the people he works with, his apostles, as sketched out in the show, are a bunch of untrained and sometimes uncouth dudes, fellows who know what their great rabbi is capable of doing, spontaneously calling upon him in a fit of insult and rage, at least on occasion, to zap evil folks with lightning bolts from on high.

Christ chuckles in amazement at their intermittent faithful indignation but restrains himself. Always thinking: What would Jesus do?

The development of these other characters is captivating.

Photo: (The Chosen) Paras Patel, who plays Matthew in Season Three of "The Chosen."

Matthew’s peculiarities, Simon’s impetuousness, Mary’s vulnerability and strength and generosity, Mother Mary’s concurrent love for and distance from her divine son, Nicodemus’ dilemma, and so many others — they’re all good.

There are some exaggerated characters, including a Roman ruler who comes across as the villain in a superhero flick, but, on the whole, the presentations in “The Chosen” are … what’s the best word? … real.

That’s it, they’re real. At least to me and perhaps to many of you.

And when a series in 2023 paints the pictures of an individual who told all around him that he was the Messiah, to “come, follow me,” leaving his devotees and detractors to decide all those years ago for themselves whether he was deity or devil or something else, a decision that is left to an entire world to this day, a depiction that is exactly that — real — is what any faithful believer loves to absorb, loves to feel, loves to have substantiated.

And it’s entertaining theater, too.
