Traces of Time . . . October 14-20, 2019

Traces of Time . . .
(To see last week's blog post--scroll down to the end of this week, then
the Week of  October 7-13, 2019 will be there.
If it's not, hit "Older Posts." at the bottom right.)
THIS WEEK-
OCTOBER 14-20, 2019
MONDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2019
Family is Everything…
   I had a 3-month check up with
my Internist, Dr. Wallin. I didn't
get a photo of him today, so
I took one of the office gals...
 My next appointment will be
January 14, 2020.
January 14, 2020 will be the
100th birthday remembrance
of my Mom,
Verna Beth Huffaker Albertson.
Here she is just after WWII
at age 26.
 TUESDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2019
Family is Everything…
Marci came...
Institute today was Chapter 7
of Saints about
"Restoration of the Priesthood
and Witnesses of the
Book of Mormon"
We testify that the
Book of Mormon is true,
and is Another Testament
of Jesus Christ.
We drove over to see
the temple site. I guess
my photos didn't record.
Then took a photo of the
new Lake Mountain
Middle School.

Karen, R.N., came
to check Walt today.
His shoulders are hurting him
this week.  Usually it's only
the right one, but recently it
has been both his right and left.
 We bicycled for 30 minutes,
then just went back home.
More leaves have fallen each
day when we go to the club house.
We watched a fun movie about
two song writers that we had
not known about--
Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby, who
wrote and composed these songs...
"Three Little Words" 1930
"Thinking of You" 1927
"Nevertheless...
...I'm In Love With You" 1931
"Who's Sorry Now?" 1923
"I Wanna Be Loved By You" 1928
"So Long Oolong" 1920
"My Sunny Tennessee" 1921
"Come On Papa" 1918
"All Alone Monday" 1926
"I Love You So Much" 1930
"Where Did You Get That Girl?" 1913
(This last one was by Bert Kalmar
and Harry Puck)

Information from "Wikipedia"
Three Little Words is a 1950 American musical film biography of the Tin Pan Alley songwriting partnership of Kalmar and Ruby and stars Fred Astaire as lyricist Bert KalmarRed Skelton as composer Harry Ruby, along with Vera-Ellen and Arlene Dahl as their wives, with Debbie Reynolds in a small but notable role as singer Helen Kane. The film, released by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Harry Ruby served as a consultant on the project, and appears in a cameo role as a baseball catcher. It was the third in a series of MGM biopics about Broadway composers; it was preceded by Till the Clouds Roll By (Jerome Kern, 1946) and Words and Music (Rodgers and Hart, 1948) and followed by Deep in My Heart (Sigmund Romberg, 1954).

Family is Everything...
We mailed our tax signatures back to Idaho,
which had been e-d in on Monday,
via our permission.
We also mailed some thank-you letters to
Ross and Karen, and Ruth.
Then we bicycled for 30 minutes.

Gary came for movie night...
 ...the first scary movie made.
We chose to watch the original
"Frankenstein" movie from 1931.
Information from "Wikipedia"
Frankenstein is a 1931 American pre-Code gothic monster horror film from Universal Pictures. It is about a scientist and his assistant who dig up corpses to build a man animated by electricity. The project goes awry when Frankenstein's assistant accidentally gives the creature an abnormal, murderer's brain. The film...was based on Mary Shelley's 1818 novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus. The created "monster" is portrayed by Boris Karloff in the film. A hit with both audiences and critics, the film was followed by multiple sequels and has become one of the most famous horror films in history.
Frankenstein stars Colin CliveMae ClarkeJohn Boles and Karloff...The make-up artist was Jack Pierce.
In 1991, the Library of Congress selected Frankenstein for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Family is Everything...
Julie took us to Cornbelly's today...
Thanks, Julie. We loved being there.
Julie pushed Walt in a wheelchair...
I had my walker...
We had fun with these grandchildren...
Jackson, Maddie, and Riggy,
along with their cousin, Jada.
Riggy, Maddie, and Jada had
fun in the Corn Cob Beach.
Walt learned to drive in a truck like
this at age 11 when he worked
for Uncle Stan for two summers
on the farmlands in Garland.
Jackson is great teen at age 14.
We thought it was going to be
cold, today. Instead it was
70 degrees.
Jackson and Riggy golfed...
They learned how to golf
 from their Dad...
The Cornbelly miniature golf is a
popular place...
Then Maddie and her cousin,
Isaac, did the zip line.
Can't see them very well
in the haze...
Maddie's walking away,
Isaac getting out of the harness...
Cute sign on this old
red tractor...from when
they had to be cranked to start.
We rendezvoused with
Gary and Issac there.
We had a fun time being introduced
to the famous "Cornbelly's"
at Thanksgiving Pointe.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2019
Family is Everything...
We had a wonderful, surprise visit
from Walt's nephew and darling wife,
Mitchell and Karen Bunn.
They were on their way home from
her brother's wedding in Delta.
Karen has 11 siblings.
They also did a session in the
Manti Temple where they were
married 38 years ago.
At mid-day we got to go to the
new Cinema right here in
Saratoga Springs "Fat Cats."
It has comfy reclining seats.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil

or Maleficent II

The sound was so loud I had
to turn my hearing aids off.
At times I held on to the sides
of my seat because I felt like
I was moving in the swoops
of the flying creatures...
Amazing cinematography!
It was fun going with
Julie, Jacee, Maddie,
and Riggy.
Can you tell the sun was in
our eyes when Jacee did a
"Selfie group" photo
as we came outside?
Later this afternoon we...
...went to bicycle.
Steve and Carter took us to
                                  supper at Denny's.
Of course, we always love being with them.

KEVIN RAY DEGLER
January 15, 1959 to September 26, 2019
Son of Charles and Bonnie Petersen Smith Degler
Chuck and Bonnie are on the left with
Kevin and Mark in front of them.
We lost Bonnie at age 60 in March 1990 to colon cancer.
Kevin's Dad, Chuck, passed away from cancer, also,
5 Feb 1999 in Nevada. Born 18 Dec 1935 in Indiana. (Age 62)

Bonnie
I found a photo of Bonnie at the
1987 Prescott Reunion...
I'm trying to download it
from my scans...but it
hasn't worked yet.

Kevin and Andrea...
 Chuck and Bonnie's four children:
Mark, Kevin, Christopher,
and Andrea "Andy."

National Lineman Appreciation Day
April 18, 2016
Here's the "Lineman's Prayer"
that was on the last page
of the printed program
for Kevin's Memorial.
If you click on it, it
will show bigger print.
Here's a photo of Kevin
in his lineman clothes.
 Kevin's widow,
Patty Boyles Degler,
hosted a delicious luncheon
for everyone. Thank you, Patty.
We share our deep, heart-felt
condolences on the loss of
your husband, Kevin.
And on the loss of your Dad,
Nick Boyles, within the
past year.
It was nice your darling Mother,
Mina Boyles, could be at the
Memorial Saturday,
coming from Alaska with you.
This photo is from their
59th Wedding Anniversary
in Oct 2015.
Here is Kevin's Memorial
Printed Program with his
Obituary
First is the cover page:
Now page 1 of
Kevin's Obituary:
Now page 2 of
Kevin's Obituary:
When I was having trouble scanning
in the Obituary, here's what I
copied for page 2.
It might be easier to read.
Kevin and his wife Patty (Boyles) began dating in March 2005 and married in October 2017. Together they enjoyed gardenino travel, baseball games, boating in Seward and quiet time in their home in Anchorage. Kevin's best buddies always seemed to be the four-legged kind, and to him they were "family." Bentley,
a.k.a. Pop-Pops, Swampy, Bo-Bo, will miss walks on the beach searching for agates and Mish-Mish will miss sitting on "the dock" with "dad."
Kevin was preceded in death by both parents; two older brothers; and his very special four-legged buddy, Tucker. Kevin is survived by his wife, Patty; his sisters, Bonnie Smith and Andy Degler; brothers, Jeff Smith, Mark Degler and Chris
Degler; nieces; nephews; extended family; and countless friends. There will be two Celebration of Life events: first in Anchorage and another following in Hagerman, Idaho. The Anchorage event will be held on Monday, Oct. 7, 2019, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., at the IBEW Local 1547 Union Hall, 3333 Denali Street, first floor meeting room. The Hagerman event will be held on Saturday,
Oct. 19, 2019, from noon to 2 p.m. at the American Legion Hall at 281 North Street W.

Here are the photos from Kevin's
Memorial on Saturday, October 19, 2019
in Hagerman, Idaho.
We signed the guest book when
we got to the American Legion Hall
                                    in Hagerman.
Here are agates that Kevin
had gathered in Alaska...
The card said: "Take an agate to
have a little piece of Kevin
with you
during your journeys."
Gary is picking one out.
Notice also Kevin's
lineman boots and hat.
Here's Kevin's Uncle Dale Petersen
with Connie Hess Petersen.
Dale is Bonnie's brother.
Dale's daughter, Trisha Gourley,
 came with Victoria and Ben,
but I didn't get a photo of them.
(Dale or Connie or Trisha
...if you have a photo
would you please
 send it to us. Thanks.)
Later: Trisha sent this...
With her and her kids,
on Monday (Oct. 21)
with Dale and Connie in
Twin Falls. Thank you, Trisha.
I counted about 125 family
and friends who came to
honor the memory of Kevin.
Memorials bring a lot of family
and friends together.
Codey McCrorey showed me a photo
in the newspaper of him saving the
football for the Hagerman High Shool
team. He is Kevin's nephew...son
of Clark, grandson of Bonnie.
He's a junior--Class of 2021 HHS.
Way to go, Codey.
My Dad, Arnold Albertson, also
graduated from Hagerman High School...
but he was the Class of 1932.
In this photo in Hagerman, he is
standing in front of the
American Legion Hall where
we were for Kevin's Memorial.

Christopher Degler gave an
eloquent tribute to his
brother, Kevin.
 Patty's brother-in-law put together
an outstanding power point slide
show of the highlights of Kevin's
life. On the forefront right, I caught
a tender moment when Clark put his
arm around Andrea to comfort her
in their sorrow as they remembered
his uncle and her brother, Kevin.

Jamie told how her Uncle Kevin
went out of his way to make sure
she felt a  part of the family since
her Dad, Larry Smith, died
in a tragic private airplane crash
in Bliss when she was a baby
in 1985.
 Jamie's mom, Patty,
had driven with her husband
from New Mexico to be here.
Jamie's daughter is also
with them. Jamie lives
in Vancouver, Washington.

 Here are Walt's two sisters...
the blonde Bonnie, and
the red-headed Phyllis.
We lost Phyllis in August 2014,
at the age of 82...partly from dimentia.
Her husband, Dale Bunn, and
all six of their children
were at the Memorial:
Standing: Dale, Matthew, Donald
"Donnie," and Mitchell Bunn,
 all from Wendell.
Sitting: Their son, Cliff, from Pocatello,
then Brenda Bunn Tagestad from
the Tri-Cities; (our son, Steve Petersen
is next, visiting with his cousins),
Beverly Bunn Inglis from Boise,
who lost her husband a few years
ago; next Stephanie Bunn,
Cliff's wife, with their daughter
Mackenzie, and their son Wyatt.
What a great tribute to honor their
nephew and cousin, Kevin, for
all of Dale and Phyllis's kids
 to come.
We were surprised and delighted to
see Walt's cousin, Jim Prescott and
his wife Lynda there from Hammett,
Idaho. We haven't seen them
for a long time.
Jim is the son of Dean and Betty.
It was great of them to
represent the Prescott side
of the family. Grama Jane
would be really pleased!
We always love being with
our nephews...here Walt is
with Mitch Bunn on the right.
  Clark, Bonnies son,
our grand nephew who
lives in Hagerman, came to thank
Walt and Dale for coming.
When we told Christopher what a
great job he had done in honoring
his brother, Kevin, he said to each
of his uncles: "Uncle Walt and
Uncle Dale, I remember hearing
you at funerals and other gatherings
standing and expressing yourselves
so eloquently, that I borrowed on
your strength to help me get
through this. I had never stood
and done anything like this
before a big group of people
and I didn't know if
I could get through it.
I told Christopher that I could see
a lot of Grama Jane coming
through as she had been a speaker
many times to large groups.
I knew she was proud of him!
We are so thankful to our sons,
Gary and Steve, for driving us
to Hagerman and back.
It was a 4 1/2 hour drive each way...
much of it in rain, sleet, and wind.
We had pulled out at 6:40 that morning,
and pulled into our driveway at
exactly 7:40 that evening --
13 hours. But it was so worth it.
"Family is Everything!"
As divine design would have it...
A little over an hour from Hagerman,
along Interstate 84 is
Burley, Idaho...where Walt and I
moved to in 1966 when he began his
medical family practice.
He had graduated from Washington University
Medical School in St. Louis, Missouri in June 1963.
(It is a private university named
after George Washington.)
He began his Internship at the Minneapolis
General Hospital on June 24, 1963...
which was the day our first child--
Mary Jane "Janie" was born.
He was at one hospital and I
was at another...however, they
called him in time to dash over
to be there in time for her birth.
After one year in Minneapolis,
Walt served two years for
his military duty with the
U.S. Public Health Service,
stationed at the U.S. Indian
Hospital in Talihina, Oklahoma.
Our second child, Gary, was
born in Ft. Smith, Ark., which
is where the military service
families were sent.
For part of Walt's duties, Walt
was assigned as the physician
on the Coast Guard Cutter
"Chataquaqua," which was
a great adventure.
Then on June 24, 1966 Walt
was honorably released from
that 2-year assignment, and
we moved to Burley, Idaho,
where a family physician,
Dr. Mahoney, had
asked him to buy his
practice because he was moving.
Our next five children: Steve, David,
Julie, Brian, and Jennifer were all
born in Burley. We lived there
for 52 years, until Aug 2018 when
our kids said we couldn't live alone
any longer...
(...photo of last family reunion at our
Burley home - July 2018
Burley was a wonderful place to raise
our family and live all those years...
we had both been born where our
families lived in Wendell, Idaho)
...and they moved us to
Saratoga Springs, Utah, where we
live with our daughter, Julie and her
husband John Peterson (she just
changed one letter in her name when
she married) and their 4 children,
Jacee, Jackson, Maddie, and Rigdon.

They have created a cozy cottage for
us within their home, with a living room,
bedroom, and handicap bathroom.
Four of our seven children live within
25 minutes of each other here, and
16 of our 39 grandchildren are here.
We miss Idaho but they are taking
very good care of us in Utah.
However, we still consider ourselves
I D A H O A N S.
Well, back to why I was talking
about Burley being on the way
between Hageman and Saratoga Springs...
one hour after we left Hagerman,
we were at Burley at 3:00 where
our grandson, Michael, was scheduled
to play a Regional Soccer Tourney
play-off game with his
Madison Bobcats from Rexburg
against the #1 ranked soccer
team in the state: Boise High.
Our grandson, Samuel Fisher, who
just got home Oct 2
from his 2-year mission
to Washington D.C. South,
would also be there with
Janie and Shawn.
Because of the storm--rain, sleet,
snow, and wind--the game was delayed.
We went to the Dairy Queen
where we got to visit for about an hour
before the weather cleared enough for
the game to start.
And that was the divine design that
we were able to welcome
Elder Sam Fisher home!
We weren't able to stay for the game,
but Michael's team did win in an
overtime...maybe it was a double
overtime. Now they go to State
next Thursday in Boise.
(Janie, could you please send us
a copy of the photo that Christine took?)
Yes, Family is Everything!
SUNDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2019
Clyde and Julia Witham spoke in
Sacrament Meeting today prior to
their leaving for the
Portland Salem Mission,
entering the MTC on Oct. 21.
 Bishop Witham served as
Bishop of this Saratoga Springs
3rd Ward prior to Bishop Mardesich.
                                We thought it would be
colder today than it turned out to be.
We went to the open house for the
Withams this afternoon.
It was hosted by Linda Hartley
and Roberta Sherman.
...at Clyde and Julia's
lovely home.
  Tammy and Mark Ballard.

  Walt and Eileen...
Thank you Roger, and David South
for helping us get down the
front steps.

We then went home to a
Sunday supper with
John and Julie's family
and Roger and Jennifer's family...
Homemade chicken noodle soup
(with homemade noodles),
and homemade monkey bread.

We are so thankful for The Plan of Salvation
and the Atonement of  Jesus Christ
that makes this Great Plan operational.
At the end of this October 20th,
we pray you have had a
restful , peaceful, and spiritual
Sabbath Day...
We share these truths as our testimony to you...
Heavenly Father lives and knows us each by name. He loves us and wants us to return to Him and Heavenly Mother when we leave this mortal existence.  He loves us just as we are at this very moment.
*** *** ***
Jesus Christ came to earth as The Only Begotten of the Father and fulfilled the Atonement. He is the Redeemer of all.
*** *** ***
Joseph Smith was foreordained to be the Prophet of the Restoration.  He is the Restorer of all things.
*** *** ***
President Russell M. Nelson is the Living Prophet today for all the world.
*** *** ***
The Bible is "the Word of God as far as it is translated correctly" and is a Testament of the Divinity of Jesus Christ.
*** *** ***
The Book of Mormon is the Word of God and is Another Testament of Jesus Christ. It is the most correct book of any book on earth.
*** *** ***
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the True Church restored for this Dispensation of the Fulness of Times.
*** *** ***
Of these truths we testify in the Name of Jesus Christ, amen.
