Traces of Time . . .June 4-10

Traces of Time . . .
THIS WEEK - June 4-10

YES, IT'S SPRING...
BUT SUMMER IS A COMIN'

MONDAY, june 4, 2018

This morning we slept in, then made whole wheat pancakes.  It's a great recipe.
So easy to make when you have just an ordinary blender.

(I'll type the recipe here......)

BLENDER WHOLE WHEAT PANCAKES
      Eileen Petersen
…like my Grama Huffaker’s in the1910s, 1920s 1930s, 40s, 50s
when her children and grandchildren were growing up...
 1 ½ c milk
1 cup wheat (yes, the kernels)
1 egg
1 Tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 Tbsp baking powder
1/3 c oil (1-2 Tbsp will work)

Put 1 cup whole wheat into blender
Add 1 cup milk and blend
at high speed for at least 3 minutes
Then start adding the rest of the
ingredients, in order given.
Blend until smooth…about 2 more minutes.
Cook on hot griddle...
    with the Homemade Syrup
    To 1 cup boiling water
add 2 cups sugar, 1 tsp Mapleine.
    Serve hot.
However, Walt also likes honey
     on these pancakes.
(He also puts honey on his
     hot oatmeal mush.)

We ran some errands, stopped in at Carey and Adams Real Estate Office to talk with Gary McCall about the sale of our home.  He said he is happy with the response in the two weeks it's been on the market.  One draw-back is that it is so big, with 6 bedrooms and most families are not as big as back in the day we raised 7 children.

But we know it will be the perfect home for the right family.

tuesDAY, JUNE 5, 2018

This morning I had a hair cut appointment.

We also had "Adult Religion Class" at noon... Each Tuesday at noon we are studying the General Conference talks from the First Presidency and other Brethren.

Nancy Blauer is a great teacher!

...then Walt had physical therapy in the pool at Burley Therapy.

Chris Gee and two of his darling daughters, Stephanie and Samantha, came to look at the wood/coal burning range we have. We're texting our kids/grandkids to see if any of them want it.

Here's the stove...with Grama Jane's dining room table on top of it (which Gary is getting).

wednesDAY, JUNE 6, 2018
This is the day we rendezvous with Dale and Connie to do a temple session. Next week starts the two-week closure for the semi-annual maintenance.

It's great to get back to the temple
after being gone a couple of weeks.

  Walt chose Idaho Joes...

This

Walt and I had chicken fried steak, Dale had
their special of the day "campfire steak"
and Connie had a half sandwich...

...and we all had a piece of pie, which most of
the time we do not have dessert.

ThUrSDAY, JUNE 7, 2018
This morning Walt has regular physical therapy.

This afternoon the new fence went up.  It's a beautiful fence.

FRIDAY, JUNE 8, 2018

Today is my sister's birthday.  I was an only child for 10 1/2 years.  Was I ever glad to have a sister!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JANICE!  "69" ...you're catching up to my 79 and a half.

Here is Janice at the Wendell Cemetery 2014.

Here's Janice and Jeff in 2010...

Here's a photo of Walt, Gary, and me with Janice when
she and Jeff joined us for Thanksgiving dinner last year.

This morning we worked on family history with Kathleen.

Kathleen always helps Walt find names from Swedish records
on his Grandmother Nellie Katie Olson Petersen's line

Irene came to tell us Mary Francis and two of her friends are
having a yard sale tomorrow in their driveway and garage.

Then we went to check out the new fence.

Yes, it's a mighty fine fence!
Yet, we still love our old "barn wood" fence around
the other two sides of our yard.
Then we had a late lunch, early supper at Shon Hing's
after running some errands.

Yumm...

We went to Pat Pettingill's viewing...
Debra and the other Pettingill girls were happy
to see their "doctor,"
...and for some, their past stake president...

Bill likes to remind Walt that their youngest daughter,

Paula, was the first baby Walt delivered when he began

his practice in Burley in July 1966.

Paula was born August 12, 1966.

Bill and Pat...married Oct 30, 1949.

Love this saying: The best thing to hold onto in life is each other.

Sister Dille brought Beryl to the viewing.
Then we went on a fun drive around Burley.
I was driving so we didn't get any photos.
We saw Fabri-Kal on Washington Avenue,
which we had no idea was there.
Plus there's a big "Burley Event Center"
across from it that we had never seen.

SATURDAY, JUNE 9, 2018

This morning is Rod Ralphs' funeral in Meridian.

Rod Ralphs - 1962-2018

Obituary

Rod Jay Ralphs was born June 13, 1962 in Idaho Falls, Idaho and passed away suddenly of cancer in Meridian, Idaho on May 31, 2018, at age 55. Rod was raised in Spokane, Washington, before moving briefly to Burley, Idaho where he graduated from Burley High School. He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Buenos Aires Argentina and used his Spanishspeaking abilities to help many people in the community. Rod graduated from Brigham Young University (BA/English) and University of Idaho (JD/Law).

On September 15, 1989, He married his eternal companion, Jennifer Lynn Lasson, in the Jordan River Temple; they are the parents of six children. Rod was employed as a lawyer for over 30 years and at the time of death, was the in-house attorney for Beehive Homes, a national assisted living corporation.

Rod cherished his work with youth and held several leadership positions dedicated to their development: Bishop of the 10 Mile Ward, Stake Young Men's President, High Councilman, and various scouting positions.

Rod's strength of character, testimony of Jesus Christ, excellent public speaking, and unforgettable, witty humor blessed the lives of many. Rod enjoyed fly fishing, was a voracious reader with a photographic memory, but most of all, loved spending time creating memories with his wife and children. He would go the extra mile to make events meaningful. Rod will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Jennifer, children: Carson (Faith), Austin (Karis), Bryan, Landon, Ashlyn, Straton, and granddaughter, Charity. His parents, Eldon and Charmaine Ralphs and siblings: Penny (Ron) Nickle, Becky (Carl) Swain, Rich (Kami), James (Anita), Charmaine (Charlie) Dieux, aunts, uncles, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and Lasson family in-laws. Preceding Rod in death are his grandsons, Luke, and Samuel, and grandparents: Jay and Helen Ralphs and Thomas X. and Arvilla Smith.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to Keystone Hospice, the staff at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center, and all those who have contributed to the support of Rod’s family.

The funeral service will be held Saturday, June 9 th at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Stake Center, 1985 N. Black Cat Rd., Meridian, Idaho. A viewing will take place from 9:00 - 11:00 a.m. preceding the funeral and the internment afterwards is scheduled to take place at the Terrace Lawn Cemetery in Meridian.

We would like to invite family and friends to share memories of Rod to be compiled into a book for his children and grandchildren. Please email to: carsonralphs@gmail.com

-----------------------------

This morning we went to Pat Pettingill's funeral. It was very spiritual.

Today, Tom and Irene's daughter, Francie, and two of her retired-teacher friends had
a garage sale next door.
Irene and I were not allowed to
buy anything per instructions
from our children.

This evening we went to a delightful
musical program hosted at the home of
our friends and neighbors--
Gary & Colleen McCall.
It was the senior recital for their
granddaughter, Klara McCall.

Colleen started teaching her to play
the flute when she was 3 years old.
She now has a music scholarship
to BYU-Idaho

 Klara played the music
of Bach and other great musicians.

The painting on the wall was done by
Colleen's mother, June Carey.
It is of their daughter Marilyn playing her cello.
Klara's brother, Philip played his violin
to let her have a few moments respid.

We wish Klara the best in college.

 Refreshments of fancy cupcakes
and fruit were served.
Cupcakes of all sizes and decor
were almost too pretty to eat.

Walt enjoyed talking to Walter McCall, Klara's dad.
Our daisies are about to bloom.
Another of our day's together is coming to an end...
We'll watch the weekly Saturday Lawrence Welk program now.
SunDAY, JUNE 10, 2018

This morning we got to Church about two minutes early.  Someone was sitting in "our" seats, but Pat Campbell had them move over one, so we got to sit in the padded folding chairs and not the metal ones.  Thanks, Pat.

Heidi Mower spoke in Sacrament Meeting about being "Meek and Humble."
She quoted one of the Brethren that "Jesus Christ is the most humble and meek person to ever live on the earth."  I had never thought about that.

Steve Ormond spoke on "Blessings of the Temple."   The holy work done in the temple are sacred blessings. David O. McKay said in 1962 that when you come into the temple, you are coming into the presence of the Lord. Leave the world behind. Seek to have added light and knowledge.

The temple is the heart of the Plan of Salvation.
In 1981 when the Jordan River Temple was first dedicated, it was the 20th operating temple.  Now 37 years later there are 159 working temples which is a 695% increase.
There are 10 temples under construction and 20 new temples announced.

We love temples.

We pray you have had a restful and peaceful Sabbath Day.

On this Sabbath Evening we bear testimony that...

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the only true Church on  earth.
Heavenly Father lives, loves, and knows each one of us.
Jesus Christ is the Only Begotten Son of God, who also lives, loves, and knows us.
Joseph Smith is the Prophet of the Restoration of all truths to the earth.
The Bible is a Testament of Jesus Christ.
The Book of Mormon is Another Testament of Jesus Christ.
Russell M. Nelson is the living Prophet for the whole earth today.

Of these truths we testify, in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Walt and Eileen Petersen - Burley, Idaho, U.S.A.
