Why is Satan represented as a serpent in the garden of Eden? There are at least two reasons. We all know the first reason, which is that because of his dishonesty he would resemble a snake that slithered on its belly in the dust. But there's another reason, which has to do with a fascinating ancient symbol.
It deals with the reality that the brazen serpent mentioned in ancient scripture represented Jesus Christ. (Numbers 21:6-9)
Book of Mormon prophet Nephi clarified that the bronze serpent and its healing powers represented the healing and atoning power of Jesus Christ. (Book of Mormon, Helaman 8:14-15)
In ancient symbology, a serpent represented a divine messenger with power to act in God's name. One of the ways that Satan beguiled Eve was to pretend that he still had that priesthood power and that he was authorized to offer her the fruit of the tree of knowledge of Good and Evil. But because he had been cast down from premortality, he no longer had that priesthood power or authority.
Satan is a counterfeit to the truth. He always will be.
