On this blog I share with family and friends my daily thoughts, doings, what interests me, and--at times--tributes to my eternal sweetheart, Walt, who graduated to heaven on 8-21-2020 at age 86.

Dedicated to our seven children--Janie, Gary, Steve, David, Julie, Brian, Jen, their spouses, our 39 grandchildren, 9 spouses married to our grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 1 due in April and posterity to come.

So our posterity now numbers 66. Number 67 due in April.

April Choice by Gary

Book released 2021

Gary’s choice for April...

I’ve been wanting to listen to another Malcolm Gladwell book for the last little while. This is one of his recent ones from 2021:

The Bomber Mafia.

Since Oppenheimer, I've been curious about knowing more of the fire bombing of Tokyo in WW2, which was more devastating than the atomic bomb drops.  Which looks like it is discussed in this book.

It's only about 5 hours, though, so I'm also including Malcolm Gladwell podcast published as a book also from 2021:

I Hate the Ivy League.

Education is something that I've been interested in for a while, and I'm curious to hear some of Gladwell's take on it. They are both available on Audible, and are about 5 hrs each, so about 11 hours total.

 THE BOMBER MAFIA

In The Bomber Mafia, Malcolm Gladwell weaves together the stories of a Dutch genius and his homemade computer, a band of brothers in central Alabama, a British psychopath, and pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard to examine one of the greatest moral challenges in modern American history.   Most military thinkers in the years leading up to World War II saw the airplane as an afterthought. But a small band of idealistic strategists, the “Bomber Mafia,” asked: What if precision bombing could cripple the enemy and make war far less lethal?

In contrast, the bombing of Tokyo on the deadliest night of the war was the brainchild of General Curtis LeMay, whose brutal pragmatism and scorched-earth tactics in Japan cost thousands of civilian lives, but may have spared even more by averting a planned US invasion.

In The Bomber Mafia, Gladwell asks, “Was it worth it?” Things might have gone differently had LeMay’s predecessor, General Haywood Hansell, remained in charge. Hansell believed in precision bombing, but when he and Curtis LeMay squared off for a leadership handover in the jungles of Guam, LeMay emerged victorious, leading to the darkest night of World War II.

The Bomber Mafia is a riveting tale of persistence, innovation, and the incalculable wages of war.

 I HATE THE IVY LEAGUE

Malcolm Gladwell has long relished the opportunity to skewer the upper echelons of higher education, from the institution of U.S. News & World Report’s Best College rankings to the LSATs to the luxe Bowdoin College cafeteria.

I Hate the Ivy League: Riffs and Rants on Elite Education, upends the traditional thinking around how education should work and tries to get to the bottom of why we often reward the wrong people. The higher education system follows a hierarchy that was created to primarily benefit top-tier, elite, well-off students, but Gladwell wants to find out how we can do a better job at educating the middle and make education more affordable, fair, and open to all.

Why is Gladwell so obsessed with American education?

The foreword and afterword of I Hate the Ivy League explains, framing this carefully curated selection of Revisionist History episodes. If you’ve never listened to Revisionist History, this collection is a thoughtful introduction to the long-running podcast, and if you’re already a fan, it allows for careful re-examination of the important issues at hand: how do we really determine what matters most when it comes to educating our children?

     Family is Everything...
No Institute - Spring Break

Lori Lyn and Betsy  will continue
the course of Instruction:
"Women in the Scriptures"
next Tuesday

Copied from last April's blog:
Now about Intelligence...
I hadn't heard of these other three.
"According to Psychologists,
there are four types of Intelligence:

1) Intelligence Quotient (IQ)

2) Emotional Quotient (EQ)

3) Social Quotient (SQ)

4) Adversity Quotient (AQ)

1. Intelligence Quotient (IQ): this is the measure of your level of comprehension. You need IQ to solve maths, memorize things, and recall lessons.

2. Emotional Quotient (EQ): this is the measure of your ability to maintain peace with others, keep to time, be responsible, be honest, respect boundaries, be humble, genuine and considerate.

3. Social Quotient (SQ): this is the measure of your ability to build a network of friends and maintain it over a long period of time.

People that have higher EQ and SQ tend to go further in life than those with a high IQ but low EQ and SQ. Most schools capitalize on improving IQ levels while EQ and SQ are played down.

A man of high IQ can end up being employed by a man of high EQ and SQ even though he has an average IQ.

Your EQ represents your Character, while your SQ represents your Charisma. Give in to habits that will improve these three Qs, especially your EQ and SQ.

Now there is a 4th one, a new paradigm:

4. The Adversity Quotient (AQ): The measure of your ability to go through a rough patch in life, and come out of it without losing your mind.

When faced with troubles, AQ determines who will give up, who will abandon their family, and who will consider suicide.

Parents please expose your children to other areas of life than just Academics. They should adore manual labor (never use work as a form of punishment), Sports and Arts.

Develop their IQ, as well as their EQ, SQ and AQ. They should become multifaceted human beings able to do things independently of their parents.

Finally, do not prepare the road for your children. Prepare your children for the road."

“Cabrini is a 2024 American biographical drama film directed by Alejandro Gómez Monteverde and written by Rod Barr, based on a story by both. The film depicts the life of Catholic missionary Francesca Cabrini, portrayed by Cristiana Dell'Anna, as she encounters resistance to her charity and business efforts in New York City. Cabrini explores the sexism and anti-Italian bigotry faced by Cabrini and others in New York City in the late 19th century.[5]

Cabrini was released in the United States on March 8, 2024, by Angel Studios. The film received positive reviews and grossed $18 million.”

Movie Night with Gary...
Wed, April 3
The movie
 was from 1998...

You've Got Mail is a 1998 romantic comedy featuring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan in their third and final screen pairing (after Joe Versus the Volcano and Sleepless in Seattle). It was directed by Nora Ephron, who co-wrote the screenplay with her sister Delia. It's loosely based on Miklós Lászlo's theatrical play Parfumerie (which had previously been adapted into the 1940 film The Shop Around the Corner, the 1949 musical film In the Good Old Summertime, and the 1963 stage musical She Loves Me).

It's always fun to have
Gary come for movie night.
This wrapped up the three
movies made from the
same story line.
And the musical version
play "She Loves Me"
that Gary's son,
Isaac, starred in at
Timpanogos High School
in March, for which he has
been chosen to be in
 the state high school
drama competitions
on May 4.
Now we're trying to
figure out a theme
for the rest of April...
we've done drama, war
movies, musicals, Westerns,
Oscar winners, comedies,
football, Christmas, mysteries,
Thanksgiving (only a
couple in that category),
Halloween,
pioneer, Spielberg,
even movies with "April"
in the title...religious,
Disney, genre,
since we started in
December 2018 with
Walt, Gary, and me.

Family is Everything…
Pre-Conference message from
our Prophet:
Super excited to hear the messages this upcoming weekend. To hear the words from a living Prophet and apostles of the Lord.

Russell M. Nelson

"Dear brothers, sisters, and friends, how grateful I am that we can watch, listen to, or attend general conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints this weekend. I know that the General Authorities and General Officers of the Church who will speak to us have prepared thoughtfully to teach us what the Lord would have them teach. I encourage you to view each session, prepared to make note of the spiritual impressions you receive.

"For each of us, time marches on. As many of you know, I am closing in on my 100th birthday. Though my body reminds me every day that it is nearly a century old and to go easy on it, I honestly don’t know where the years have gone. They have simply flown by.

"As senior leaders in the Church, we are called to serve for the remainder of our lives, often long beyond “retirement age.” This means that you may see some of us during general conference speak while sitting down, or pre-record our message to be shared at the appropriate time, or even require a little assistance getting to and from our seats in the conference center.

"From my point of view, this is cause for celebration. I thank the Lord every day for the privilege of still being here with you. I cherish working alongside colleagues who are wearing out their lives in service to our Heavenly Father and His Son, Jesus Christ, despite the aches and creaks that come with advancing age. I don’t have words to express how grateful I am for strong colleagues on whom I can lean in many ways as we strive to serve the Lord.

"May each of us, regardless of our individual circumstances, listen with open hearts and minds to what we hear this weekend so that the Lord can continue to direct each of us in our individual paths.

"Happy general conference,

                my dear brothers and sisters!"

 Sam’s Song Lyrics

Here's a happy tune you'll love to croon

They call it Sam's song

It's catchy as can be, the melody

They call it Sam's song

Nothing on your mind

And then you'll find you're humming Sam's Song

Why, it makes you grin

Gets under your skin as only a song can do

People that you meet out on the street

All whistling Sam's Song

Everyone you see will soon agree that it's a grand song

So forget your troubles and wear a smile

You'll find you never go wrong

If you learn to croon this happy tune

They call it Sam's song

"And now another treatment of this

Classic American Theme

Brought to you by, Mr. Gary Crosby"

Here's a happy tune

(That'll bring you a smile all the while)

(When you croon it you're really in style)

And the title is Sam's Song

It's catchy as can be

(With a sly little beat)

(And the melody sweet keeps you tapping your feet)

And the title is Sam's Song

"How's your brace"

(Why, it makes you grin)

(Gets under your skin as only a song can do)

People that you meet

(Hello Joe, what you know)

(And remind me to Moe, tell him business is slow)

(But I'm whistling)

Sam's Song

Everyone you see

(Has a story to tell or a gimmick to sell)

(But agree that it's swell)

(And it's really)

A grand song

So forget your troubles and wear a smile

You'll find you never go wrong

If you learn to croon

Like a lark in the park

Who is making his mark serenading the dark

With a (Chorus) of Sam's song

If you learn to croon the happy tune

President Russell M. Nelson Announces 15 Temples

This brings the worldwide total to 350 houses of the Lord

In concluding the Sunday afternoon and final session of the April 2024 general conference, President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced 15 new temples to be built around the world.

He said, “Here is my promise. Nothing will help you more to hold fast to the iron rod than worshipping in the temple as regularly as your circumstances permit. Nothing will protect you more as you encounter the world’s mists of darkness. Nothing will bolster your testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ and His Atonement or help you understand God’s magnificent plan more. Nothing will soothe your spirit more during times of pain. Nothing will open the heavens more. Nothing! The temple is the gateway to the greatest blessings God has for each of us.”

Latter-day Saints consider temples to be the house of the Lord and the most sacred places of worship on the earth. The primary purpose of temples is for faithful members of the Church to receive peace, inspiration, and spiritual power as they enter into sacred agreements with God in His holy house.

Here is a list of the 15 temple locations announced:

·         Uturoa, French Polynesia

·         Chihuahua, Mexico

·         Florianópolis, Brazil

·         Rosario, Argentina

·         Edinburgh, Scotland

·         Brisbane Australia South Area

·         Victoria, British Columbia

·         Yuma, Arizona

·         Houston Texas South Area

·         Des Moines, Iowa

·         Cincinnati, Ohio

·         Honolulu, Hawaii

·         West Jordan, Utah

·         Lehi, Utah

·         Maracaibo, Venezuela

There are 189 holy temples in operation

and 161 more either announced or

under construction = 350.

General Conference fills my heart and soul with inspiration, and gratitude for the Restoration of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in these latter days. I am thankful for these anointed Church leaders who dedicate their lives to the service of the Lord, and share their wisdom and guidance with us.

I fear for those who scoff at The Church

and make light of sacred things.

*I am so thankful for The Plan of Salvation and the Atonement of  Jesus Christ that makes this Great Plan operational.
