Family is Everything…
 Karen, R.N., came to
help Walt.
We so appreciate all her help.
    We had Family Home Evening
for the Empty Nesters in the
neighborhood at home tonight.
"Living a Spiritually
Centered Life."
The ten who came tonight are
front left to right:
Walt Petersen, Nelson Spencer,
Bryant Hatch, Howard Howell.
Back: Judy Duntson, Kathie Hatch,
Sharon Howell, Leslie Elmer,
Linda Hartley, and Eileen Petersen.
Kathie took this photo so I could
be in it.

 Kathie and Bryant have hosted
now for three weeks now.
Thank you, Hatches.
 We love their beautiful
Christmas decorations.
 They have a wonderful
Nutcracker collection displayed
so uniquely in the card catalog
cabinet they got from a BYU auction.

Family is Everything…
  No Institute until January
when we will continue

I'd rather be doing...
Karen came again to help Walt.
She is a wonderful nurse.
It's such a joy to live near our kids
and have them pop in.
Steve came by to bring Jacee
her favorite ice cream--Cookies 'n Ceam.
WIt's beginning to look a lot
like C H R I S T M A S.
Marci came late today
to help Walt.

Family is Everything...
We had our Ladies' Lunch at
the China Isle Restaurant.
Their lunches are very reasonably
priced and generous portions.
Nine of us were able to be there.
Left to rigfht:
MaryAnn Mardesich, Kathie Hatch,
Linda Hartley, Kaye Wyler,
Tammy Ballard, Judy Duntson,
Sharon Howell, Eileen Petersen,
and Vicki Conner.
Here's the photo a little larger, but
we may not be able to see the gals
on each side.
Kaye had invited us all beforehand
to come to her home for dessert
after lunch.  She said this tree in
her bedroom is one of her favorite.
She explained how she wanted this
stained glass window.
She is happy how it turned out.
This tree in her living room has
Egyptian ornaments on it.
Doug spent several years digging
for mummies in that country.
Back in October he had given a FHE
at the residential club house about
his work in Egypt showing interesting
photographs he had taken there.
(Kaye, had you taken some of
those photographs, too?)
I tried to get a photo of Kaye by
the tree, but I didn't get the light
adjusted right.
Kaye, maybe you can take a photo
of this tree in the right lighting and
send to me. And please take some
of those unique Egyptian figures
up close. Thank you.
Kaye had baked several kinds of
delicious Christmas cookies...
 ...including peanut butter with
half dipped in chocolate, chocolate
chip, lemon bars, and...
...I didn't get the name of those
round bon-bon shaped ones
that melt in your mouth.

What a peaceful time being
able to "linger longer" together
in Kaye's beautiful home...
 ...enjoying being together and...
...I think it was Tammy that told
us Kaye's birthday had been
yesterday, December 3rd,
so we all sang
"Happy Birthday" to her.
...she was happily surprised.
...since I was taking the photos,
I asked Kaye to take one that I
could be in to prove I was there, too.
...then we had a serendipity of
having Doug come home.
Doug showed one of the gals
how they added a touch of
Christmas to their Moroni statue.
 When I got home Maddie
was just coming home from
school in time to head to her
BYU Youth Ballroom team
practice in Provo.
 Wednesday means movie night
with our oldest son, Gary.

We started the December Christmas
movies by watching the 1946
"It's a Wonderful Life,"
the colorized version.
Information from Wikipedia
It's a Wonderful Life is a 1946 American Christmas fantasy drama film produced and directed by Frank Capra, based on the short story and booklet The Greatest Gift, which Philip Van Doren Stern wrote in 1939 and published privately in 1943.[4] The film is one of the most beloved in American cinema, and has become traditional viewing during the Christmas season.
The film stars James Stewart as George Bailey, a man who has given up his dreams to help others, and whose imminent suicide on Christmas Eve brings about the intervention of his guardian angelClarence Odbody (Henry Travers). Clarence shows George all the lives he has touched, and how different life in his community of Bedford Falls would be if he had never been born.
Despite performing poorly at the box office due to stiff competition at the time of its release, the film has become a classic and is a staple of Christmas television around the world.[5]
Theatrically, the film's break-even point was $6.3 million, about twice the production cost, a figure it did not come close to achieving on its initial release. An appraisal in 2006 reported: "Although it was not the complete box-office failure that today everyone believes ... it was initially a major disappointment and confirmed, at least to the studios, that Capra was no longer capable of turning out the populist features that made his films the must-see, money-making events they once were."[6]
It's a Wonderful Life is now considered one of the greatest films of all time. It was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and has been recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made,[4] as number 11 on its initial 1998 greatest movie list, as number 20 on its revised 2007 greatest movie list, and as number one on its list of the most inspirational American films of all time.[7] Capra revealed that it was his personal favorite among the films he directed and that he screened it for his family every Christmas season.[8]

*******
The Brewers are in Utah...
Jen, Ben, Josh, and Liz,
We are so excited to see you in Salt Lake City for dinner this evening, with Gary and us.
Then we're going to see the Christmas lights on Temple Square.
Love,
Grampa ‘n Grama Petersen
Jen rendezvoused with her friend, Deb Barry from Wales, and two other returned Guatemala welfare missionaries, Whitney, and Amy as they work with the Missionary Department to revive the welfare missionary program.
Denny 's was one of the places Deb
and her Mom, and other family members
wanted to eat during their week here.
Jen had a tender time with her
sister missionaries with whom
she served in the Guatemala
City Guatemala Central Mission
back in 1995 to 1996.
They have been back to Guatemala
helping with various programs there.
 Jen and Amy.
We went to see the Christmas lights on Temple Square.
Jen will send the photos she took of us there.

 Marci had to hurry off
before I got her photo this morning.

 Steve and Natalie hosted breakfast
for the Brewers, Gary, Grampa and me.
We enjoy being together. It's
always so good to have Jen be able
to come visit from Rochester, Minnesota.
There's always a lot of lively
conversation when family is together.
So fun to have Ben, Josh, and Liz
come with Jen. And fun for Jackson
to be with cousins.
 We love this plaque in
Steve and Natalie's home.

We also love their Nativity set.

How fitting to have the Nativity by
the family wall...because of the
Savior families can be together forever.
They have a beautiful Christmas tree.
  Three siblings together...
Jen, Steve, Gary.
Cousins...
Both 9th graders...
Jackson Peterson and Ben Brewer.
Ben has grown since we saw him
in May. He is 6' tall now.
And Jackson is close behind!
We love having some of
the Brewers here...

This afternoon we
went to the...
  BYU Youth Dancesport
Ballroom
Winter Showcase
 at Timpview High School Auditorium
Provo, Utah
Jacee was unable to dance because
she has a torn ACL and a partial torn
meniscus in her knee from an injury
last Saturday while skiing at Pomerelle.
She is scheduled for surgery soon.
She will miss the rest of this
ballroom season.
We are so sad for Jacee, but
she will come back even stronger.
We love seeing her dance.
And we loved seeing Maddie
dance this afternoon with her
youth BYU Ballroom Team.
Cousins--Liz and Maddie together.
The Brewers and Gary were great
supporters of their dancing cousin today.
We drove back to Steve and Natalie's
home at sunset.

"A Beautiful Day in
the Neighborhood"
about Mister Rogers
"Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is a 2019 American drama film directed by Marielle Heller and written by Micah Fitzerman-Blue and Noah Harpster, inspired by the 1998 article "Can You Say ... Hero?" by Tom Junod, published in Esquire. The film stars Tom Hanks, Matthew Rhys, Susan Kelechi Watson, and Chris Cooper. It depicts Lloyd Vogel (Rhys), a journalist for Esquire who is assigned to profile beloved television icon Fred Rogers (Hanks).
The film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2019, and was theatrically released in the United States on November 22, 2019, by Sony Pictures Releasing. It received positive reviews from critics, with particular praise for Hanks' and Rhys' performances, Marielle Heller's direction, and the heart-warming messages, and has grossed $39 million.
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood was just chosen by Time magazine as one of the ten best films of the year." Wikipedia
We liked it a lot!
It would be good to read this article...if you plan to see the movie, if you have already seen the movie, or neither.
Can You Say...Hero?
Fred Rogers has been doing the same small good thing for a very long time...

Thanks for being such a
wonderful father!
Julie's post on face book today...
One of my favorite scriptures and a big reason why I
started attending church again after my ten-year hiatus.
Walt wasn't able to walk well

enough today to go to Church,

and he didn't feel well.
We tuckered him out with all
the activities with family
the past two days.
He slept most of the day.
Julie stayed home with him
the first hour, and John the
second hour so I could go to Church.
Thank you~
It was so lonesome without
Walt being with me!

The table is almost set for dinner.
Thanks, John, for another delicious
Sunday roast beef dinner.
We watched The First Presidency
Christmas Devotional this evening.
At this Christmas season, the whole Christian world celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ, the “Prince of Peace.” In His final instructions, the Lord Jesus Christ told his Apostles, “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you; not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid” (John 14:27).

We
The Savior and his Apostles had no program for world peace other than individual righteousness. War and conflict are the result of wickedness; peace is the product of righteousness. The blessings of the gospel are universal, and so is the formula for peace: keep the commandments of God.

We
Peace is our Savior’s promise, and peace is our goal. I cherish President Russell M. Nelson’s teaching at last year’s First Presidency Christmas devotional: “Jesus Christ is God’s transcendent gift—the gift of the Father to all of His children.” I pray that eternal truth will permeate all we do at this Christmas season.

We are always inspired by
the First Presidency and
The Brethren and
General Primary, Young Women,
and Relief Society presidencies.

We are so thankful for The Plan of Salvation
and the Atonement of  Jesus Christ
that makes this Great Plan operational.
This painting is called "Christ in the Americas." It was commissioned by the Church to be painted for the new San Salvador El Salvador Temple which was dedicated in August 2011. The artist is in Salt Lake City. Right now I can't remember his name. I will have to look it up.
At the end of this December 8th,
we pray you have had a
restful , peaceful, and spiritual
Sabbath Day...
We share these truths as our testimony to you...
Heavenly Father lives and knows us each by name. He loves us and wants us to return to Him and Heavenly Mother when we leave this mortal existence.  He loves us just as we are at this very moment.
*** *** ***
Jesus Christ came to earth as The Only Begotten of the Father and fulfilled the Atonement. He is the Redeemer of all.
*** *** ***
Joseph Smith was foreordained to be the Prophet of the Restoration.  He is the Restorer of all things.
*** *** ***
President Russell M. Nelson is the Living Prophet today for all the world.
*** *** ***
The Bible is "the Word of God as far as it is translated correctly" and is a Testament of the Divinity of Jesus Christ.
*** *** ***
The Book of Mormon is the Word of God and is Another Testament of Jesus Christ. It is the most correct book of any book on earth.
*** *** ***
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the True Church on the earth today.

Of these truths we testify in the Name of Jesus Christ, amen.
