President George Washington's Actual Birthday

Today we worked on our computers to restore the Internet that went off Sunday afternoon.

Family Home Evening was at Ken & Bonnie Fronk's home.  The hosts served Salmon and Pork Loin, along with Baked Potatoes.  The rest of the pot luck dinner was...
Hot Asian Veggies - Dan Black
Hot Squash baked in brown sugar - Gibbons
Fresh fruit layered in a trifle bowl - Bloxhams
Fresh tossed salad -with dressings on the side - Ormonds
Hot, homemade rolls - Petersens
Strawberry shortcake - McCalls
It was all delicious! We are lucky to have such good cooks in our Empty Nester Neighborhood group of friends.

We missed Ken and Bonnie Hansen.  Ken was in Salt Lake for a checkup to follow up the triple bypass he had in January.
And we are missing the Gortons and Roskelleys who have been serving missions since August 2015.
Elder and Sister Gorton are serving in the Greece Mission August 2015-July 2017,
Elder and Sister Roskelley are serving in the Texas Ft. Worth Mission August 2015-February 2017.

The Fronks did the FHE lesson centered around the various holidays and special days in February.
First -- Valentine's Day

Next -- Presidents' Day

Third -- Random Acts of Kindness Week

Fourth -- February 29 ... why is it needed every four years?

What about the future or past...

We enjoy being together

Bonnie had the six couples sign up for the rest of the year:
January -- Gibbons and Petersens had dinner at Morey's
February -- Fronks
March -- McCalls
April -- Petersens
May --  Bloxhams
June -- Ormonds
July --  Gibbons
August -- Hansens
September -- Petersens
October --  Bloxhams
November --  McCalls
December --  Fronks

Stake Relief Society Dinner Meeting "My Once Upon a Time" honoring the sisters 80 and over. There are 93 sisters in the stake who are 80 or over.
Bernice Beck, sitting on the far left below, turned 95 last week.
Sister Morris second from left, is near 100, and her daughter, Sister Garn, behind her, is the Relief Society president for the Seventh Ward.
Sister Jennie Egbert, far right, from the _____ Ward, is in her mid-80's. She is the mother of Janet Hansen.

Dinner catered by Denny's - Chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, tossed salad, roll.  Dessert ice cream sundaes.  It was all very tasty.
The centerpieces were photos of the 93 sisters in the stake who are 80 and over.  Sister Boemer, the stake Relief Society President, is in the red shirt at the far right.

Each ward Relief Society President chose a sister to represent all the sisters in Relief Society 80 and over in their ward.
Each president was allotted 5 minutes to tell about their Sister.
Below is LaVon Coltrin of Star Ward ___.
Gladys Harrison, in the red jacket, from Seventh Ward was
talked about by her R.S. president
Sheri     , president of the Star ___ Ward, told about LaVon Coltrin.
The yellow sheets posted on the wall gave the names of each sister 80 and over by ward.  Seventh Ward had the most with 25 sisters.
Amber Grayson, 1st counselor in our Burley Third Ward, (our president LaNada Kerbs was sick) told about Laura Nielson.  Our ward had 16 sisters who are 80 and over.
The microphone cord didn't reach far enough for her to stand behind Laura Nielson, who is in the red top with the black sweater.
Standing to the left is _______________, president of the ___ Ward.  She told about Delores Green, who is sitting on the right.

I tried to get all 7 sisters who were honored but they were already getting up before I could get a photo.
President Chad Jones shared highlights from President Russell M. Nelson's General Conference message about women of the Church from the October 2015 General Conference.
trying to see best photo
The sister to President Jones' right was signing for the hearing impaired.
Janine Taylor from  1st Ward sang the theme song: "Once Upon a Time."  I didn't get a photo of her.  I always love to hear Janine sing.

The Stake Relief Society Presidency were too busy to stop for a photo together.  I tried to get each one.  Here is President Boemer with Ruth Melling.
Here is the second counselor, Wendy Weeks, busy gathering everything from the tables.  They planned on serving 300 at the dinner.
They told me Linda Hostein, 1st Counselor, was in the kitchen, but when I went there, I couldn't find her.  They said there was quite a lot of food left if any wanted to go fill up any plates for shut ins or themselves.

Here are the 7 sisters at the table where I ate.
Left to right: Ruth Melling, Loretta Peterson, Lily Bell, Kathleen Hedberg, Debbie Pierce, Donna Martell, and Kenna Durfee.  Lily, Donna, and Kenna were among the age 80 and over sisters who were honored.
Kathleen took and photo that I was in.

LaRae Crane and I went visiting teaching.
She made Rice Krispie treats with valentine M&M's in them for each sister.
LaRae pointed out in the lesson that marriage and family didn't used to have to be defended.

For Presidents' Day  Tyler Gerratt came with his grandfather, Rex Gerratt, to get our renewal for the Boy Scout project to put up flags for the holidays.  It is $25 for one year.
They usually take the flags down before sunset, but since they are collecting for a new year, it has taken them longer.
It's so nice on holidays to see the flags on so many lawns all over town.
For Family Home Evening we read through the Sunday School Lesson #8: "O How Great the Goodness of Our God" Nephi 9 and 10, to help us understand our need for the Atonement of Jesus Christ and to teach us how to receive all the blessings of the Atonement.  We also read some of the scripture references for this lesson.

And we read the subtitles for the Priesthood/Relief Society from Teachings of Presidents of the Church - Howard W. Hunter - Lesson #4:  "Help from on High." Focus: "Perhaps no promise in life is more reassuring than that promise of divine assistance and spiritual guidance in times of need."

Refreshments for our family home evening were ice cream cones from our freezer. For an activity we watched the end of an old movie about the life of the Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, who served on this highest legal entity in the United States from 1902-1932.

February 16, 2016 - Tuesday

Today we caught up on things at home, I baked and frosted some Valentine sugar cookies to take to Walt's home teaching families.  He now has seven: David and Alice, Dan, Jean, Ruth, Marizza, Darrell and MaryAnn, and Mark and LeAnn.

It was 62 degrees today so Walt wanted to go out and work on the fence, but he just went to check it out.  Tom and Irene, our neighbors, were out raking their backyard.
I had my 3-month check in with our Internist, Dr. Spackman. I'm doing well.  He reminded me to walk every day and to keep that culprit "sugar" out of my diabetic life.  My A1C is down to 6.7.  (I called it AC1 and the doctor jokingly told me I have to get the lingo right.)

We like Dr. Spackman very much.  He came to Burley from Canada about the same time his friend, Dr. Bernie Boemer came from Canada in 1995 to take over Walt's medical practice when Walt was called as a mission president.
Seems impossible that that was 21 years ago!~

When Julie called us today she asked if we had any tulips coming up.  Brent and Vicki, John's parents, here in Burley said theirs are coming up.  So Walt went outside and sure enough, there are some tulips coming up.
Here's a closeup of the tulips.
Walt told me my coal was still at the back of the wood pile.

February 8, 2016 - Monday ~ ~ Family Home Evening

I was baking some heart sugar cookies last night to send to our families for Valentine's Day.  I couldn't believe my eyes when the 8-minute timer dinged and I opened the oven to this.  The broiler was going full-blast, even tho it showed "Bake 350º."  The tops were dark brown and the bottoms were raw dough.

I hit the "off" button, but the broiler wouldn't go off. I hit "off" again....the broiler coils just stayed bright red.  I got Walt to come try....it still wouldn't go off.  Finally, as Walt kept touching buttons, it finally went off.  Our stove is 40 years old...so I guess we can expect it to start malfunctioning.

Luckily I had cooked the first batch while the oven was still normal.  I put the two batches side by side for comparison.
So our kids/grandkids may not get Valentine cookies.

We had a delightful lunch with Dan and LaRae Crane. They drove us with them to the Wayside Café.
The second Monday of each month this restaurant serves a free lunch to senior citizens at 1:00 p.m..  There were three items to choose from.
Each of us chose this one -- the meat loaf.  It was delicious!  And the mashed potatoes are real - not from a box.
It came with ham 'n bean soup -- hot and yummy!
LaRae said that last week, when she asked what Dan wanted for his birthday supper, he said: "Ham 'n Beans."
She commented that the bean soup today was tastier than what she made for him, adding, because it had more spices.
LaRae also said the coconut pudding was better than the desserts usually are with this lunch.
Extra waitresses volunteer to come in--with no pay, except for tips--to help on this senior citizen day each month. What a great thing for them to do!
Our waitress was Stephanie Rose from Rupert.  She was efficient and very nice.
It was fun to see the Wayside full of grey-haired people like us.
Stephanie took a photo of us four enjoying our free lunch. We were sitting right by the window that was by the door,
so Dan and LaRae saw lots of people they knew
as they were leaving.
No wonder the Wayside received this Award of Appreciation.
Most places that we go, someone who has been a patient of Dr. Petersen's is so happy to see him.  Lorene Maxie came rushing over and said: "Dr. Petersen, how nice to see you!

"You were my best doctor!"
We were so happy to see Bonnie Rose, whom LaRae and I used to visit teach before she moved from Syringa Plaza.  We miss her.  She is a true Christian!
I wanted a photo showing the Wayside sign.  LaRae said: "Dan, please turn around, Eileen wants another photo."
I didn't think the sign showed up enough, so I zoomed in closer.  [It says in the circle: "Breakfast Anytime."]  The Wayside is on the highway going to Rupert not far from the Exit to Interstate I-15.
What an enjoyable time we had.  Walt said to the Cranes as we got to our home. "The food was good but the company was better!"
Walt got a little exercise walking out to the mailbox and bringing in the mail.  That morning he had already ridden the stationery bicycle for 30 minutes for over six miles.
I wouldn't have needed to wear my winter coat since it felt warm and probably got in the 40's again today as it did yesterday.  Spring is coming soon, isn't it?
The rest of the afternoon, I put today's photos in the blog, and Walt got to do one of his favorite things, too--working on our financial records. [Not one of his favorite things at all!]
Now I'm going to walk on the treadmill while we watch the recorded Jeopardy [it's the collegiate tourney and a co-ed from Boise whose is going to UofCat Berkley won today], then go over our next week's Sunday School and Priesthood/Relief Society Lessons for Family Home Evening tonight.

Homemade bread and milk for a light supper after that big lunch.

February 9, 2016 - Tuesday

Visiting Teaching day...we planned to go but none of our sisters was available.  We gave it the college try.

Blast from the past.  I came upon this photo when searching for something else.
This is in Minneapolis, Minnesota, when Walt was an intern at the Minneapolis General Hospital.  Our first child was born on the day Walt began his internship--June 24, 1963.
When Janie was three weeks old, I had to go to work because Walt was paid just 17 cents an hour.
I was hired as the receptionist and secretary for two physicians who were specialists of Internal Medicine in downtown Minneapolis.  I was 24, turning 25 in December of 1963.  We were there from June 12, 1963 until June 25, 1964.

In the morning, I would push Janie in the buggy over to our neighbor, Margo Ward, the wife of another intern, who took care of her during the day.  Then I caught the bus on that side of the low-income housing project.  I'd get back about 5:30 or 6:00 to pick Janie up and go back to our apartment.

All through our first few years of marriage, I cut my own hair---not because I have any talent for that, but because of our small budget.  We have fun memories of those years.
Here I am--evidently when it's colder ready to push Mary Jane in the buggy to the other side of the housing development--to Margo Ward's apartment. Her husband, Dr. Jon Ward, was also an intern at Minneapolis General Hospital.  If I remember right, they had two little girls.

Every third day Walt was on all-night call.  It was good I didn't have to stay alone, even though Mary Jane was just a few months old, I felt "not alone" with her there with me every third night.

In January 1964--half-way through the internship--the hospital became "Hennepin County General Hospital" and they gave the interns a raise in pay.  It wasn't a whole lot, but by March Walt felt it was enough that I could quit my job and stay home with our little girl.  From then on I was content to be "an at-home-Mom."

Back to the present.  This afternoon I helped for an hour at the Burley Library Book Sale.  For 5 days - Feb. 9-13 - you can fill a grocery bag full of books for $1.00. There will be more books put out each day.

It was fun to see so many children get a bag full of books, as well as their parents. (Photo not loaded from camera yet 7pm Tuesday when I'm working on blog._

February 10, 2016 - Wednesday

Temple Day.  Connie wasn't feeling well today, so we three rendezvoused for the 1:00 session.

Walt and I did sealings with our Burley Third Ward High Priest's group at 11:00, then we did the session at 1:00 with Dale.
It was great to see The Gibbons arriving for their Wednesday afternoon/evening shift as we were leaving.  Here is Marilyn.
And here is Dave.  I think they have worked in the Temple for 12 years since they retired, in addition to a 2-year mission to Kentucky-Tennessee area, and an 18-month mission to the San Salvador El Salvador Temple.  And since they returned in 2013, Dave has been the first counselor in the Twin Falls Idaho Mission.  They are a dedicated couple and great friends!
It was Dale's turn to choose where to go for lunch.  He said he felt like having Italian or pizza.  The Pizza Hut won out.
We pick up items at Costco about once every three months.  This was the day we needed to get two things there.
This brought a smile to our faces and the hope that Spring is just around the corner: a rack of beautiful Easter dresses for little girls.

February 11, 2016 - Thursday

To Provo, Utah for our grandson's State Swim Meet -- West Lake High School - Saratoga Springs - Kimble Petersen, a junior.  Kimble is in the black swim trunks with the shaved head.
And the State High School Swim Meet Champion for the 50-yard Free Style is KIMBLE PETERSEN! Way to go Kimble!

He won by 21.56 seconds to the defending champion's 21.61 seconds .... so .05 seconds. Only a few high schoolers have done the 50 yard free under 22 seconds.
Kimble's goal now is to break the state record, which is 1.6 second less than his personal record.

This is one happy family! Steve and Natalie, Kelsey, Cortney, and Carter with the state champion - Kimble.

Tonight Kimble will be competing in the 100-yard free style and some medley relays.  We know you have made your good luck by getting up at 5:00 each morning to swim or to do cross fit for all of this!

Now we need photos of another Champion in the family.
Joshua Petersen played the piano concerto with his Canyon Corner High School in Draper, Utah.
We're so proud of our Music Champion.
    Congratulations, Joshua!

We are proud of each of our 35 grandchildren and what you all do to make this world a better place to live!
And now we look forward to seeing what our great-grandchildren will be doing.
