Today I took one photo--Walt working on the vanity.
September 22, 2015 - Tuesday

"The Mind of a Scientist, the Soul of an Apostle of God"
SALT LAKE CITY —
“Elder Richard G. Scott of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints died Tuesday at 1:45 p.m. MDT from causes incident to age, while surrounded by his family at his home in Salt Lake City. He was 86.

“Elder Scott was sustained as an apostle on October 1, 1988. He was called as a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy on April 2, 1977, and served as a member of the presidency of that quorum from October 1983 until he was called as an apostle in 1988.

“Elder Richard G. Scott spent his life in the pursuit of truth. He had the mind of a scientist but the soul of an apostle of God. He bore testimony that while scientific truths are relative, God’s truths are absolute and will ultimately bring joy to those who follow them.http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article...

We will miss Elder Scott...

Our friends took a photo of us.

Then we took a photo of them...
Then I took a photo of Walt working some more on the vanity...
September 23, 2015 - Wednesday

We rendezvoused with Dale and Connie at the Twin Falls Temple to do the 3:00 session.  We were happy to take names through that Kathleen Hedberg had given us from her family line.

We then enjoyed having dinner with them at Johnny Carino's Restaurant.  Dale chose to have Italian food and I said we had never been to Johnny Carino's.  I chose lasagne, which was good but not as good as Maxie's Tomatoes where we went two weeks ago.

September 24, 2015 - Thursday

We did some grocery shopping. Almost every time Walt goes shopping with me, he sees someone he knows.  We walked by this family and the young man said: "Dr. Petersen?" adding "Do you remember me?"  Walt had to ask his name, then he remembered h.  Walt had delivered him, then the whole family were his patients for all the rest of his growing up years.
Then we drove out to the Woodland Mill and Cabinet shop that is run by Dean Woodland -- Heather Fronk's husband.  Walt asked him if he repaired furniture and showed him the short leg that had broken from our coffee table in the living room. Dean said he didn't like doing repairs but would drop by and take a look at it.
[Actually as I post this on Oct. 8, Walt glued the leg back on today, so we hope it will hold.]

Dean's shop is at 1357 East Main, which is where the Y-Dell Bowl was.  I thought he had converted his shop from that building but he told us that building was completely torn down and he had this new one built.  It's very impressive!
And I had just figured out and said as we drove up to it: "Oh, that's why it was called the Y-Dell....the road forms a "Y" here." [duh]

September 25, 2015 - Friday
Today I got my hair cut by Jenny.
This evening we went to the wedding reception of J.W. Sagers and Saedryn (goes by Saedie I think they said) Patterson.  They were married in the Salt Lake Temple yesterday.
Joe and Sherre were excited to have all their children and grandchildren there.
The newlyweds are a darling couple and looked so happy.
It's always fun to greet these happy newlyweds and talk with them and their family.  Most of you know that President and Sister Sagers had six daughters--Jesse, Sarah, Erin, Lacie, Liza, Emma-- then a son, J.W.
It was fun catching up with them since they served as mission president and wife of the Texas Ft. Worth Mission for three years (I think 2010-2013, then he was transferred to finish his CES career teaching Institute in California.  He has just retired this summer and they are getting their papers ready to serve a mission early in 2016.
They are back in Idaho now.
President Sagers was one of Walt's counselors when Walt was stake president of the Burley Idaho West Stake May 1983 to Nov 1992.  Then Pres. Sagers was called as a bishop and was our stake president I think about 2001 to 2010.
We enjoyed seeing other friends, too.  Here are Ray and Cheryl Koyle.
It's nice to be back in I D A H O and renewing old acquaintances.
There was a beautiful sunset from this outdoor gathering at the Unity Ward.  It's like coming to the end of a perfect day.

September 26, 2015 - Saturday

BYU vs Michigan football game....10:00 a.m. MDT
What a sad game.  We were sorry to see the Cougars shut out 31-0 in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  We watched the game at Ruth Melling's home along with Bishop Steve and Michelle Gerratt, Tyler, Clara, Ryan, and Dallin.  Five-year old Dallin amazes us with how much he knows about football!

In the afternoon we went to a baptism of  Marty...here President Gibbons, the First Counselor in the Mission Presidency congratulates him.
...and his little sister Shanelle, who was with a friend after.

The General Women's Session of General Conference
We had a wonderful soup and salad luncheon before this session.
I rode over with Ruth Melling and Pat Williams and we sat by Michelle Gerratt and Amanda.

We also sat by Jacque Kay and Donna Westergard.
How fun it was to see mothers and daughters together, and other friends... here is Kenna Durfee and Debra Jones.
And I am here with Laura Nielson, Kathleen Hedberg, and Kenna Durfee.
What wonderful and timely messages we heard from our selected speakers of our General Presidencies of Relief Society, Young Women, and Primary.  The chapel was much fuller than it had been last March.
Here is the introduction from a summary of the
GENERAL WOMEN'S SESSION
It is now officially called "the first session of each Semiannual General Conference." (See in the first two lines below in the quote.)
I can't remember that it was called that at the April 2015 General Conference.  I will have to look it up and post it on my blog later.
The following is quoted from an official Church site: September 26, 2015.
"Thousands of Latter-day Saint women across the globe gathered for the first session of the 185th Semiannual General Conference.
A capacity congregation of 21,000 women and girls age 8 and older filled the Conference Center in downtown Salt Lake City for the session.
The meeting was translated and sent to more than 7,400 church buildings in 100 countries via television, radio, satellite and Internet broadcasts.
President Thomas S. Monson presided at the women’s session — which was conducted by Sister Bonnie L. Oscarson, Young Women general president — and attended by members of Relief Society, Young Women and Primary general presidencies and boards and many General Authorities."
I will quote from one of the four speakers during the next posts on my blog.
I came away feeling happy I'm a woman, a wife, a mother and grandmother (and soon to be great-grandmother) in Zion.

September 27, 2015 - Sunday
In Sacrament Meeting, the first speaker was a new convert to the Church.  Bernadine Francisco told us she was a full-blooded Navajo Indian. She moved to Burley 17 months ago, and was baptized 3 1/2 months ago. Her daughter, Shantelle, was baptized yesterday.
She shared how she grew up so poor after her father left her mother with 5 children to raise alone.  She doesn't like to look back on it because life was so hard.
Now her life is happy because she has found the true Gospel.
She was assigned to talk about the "Atonement" today. Her grandparents and mother always taught her to pray, which has helped her prepare her talk today.
In all her 35 years, she said she has never been so happy as now with all the blessings from the Lord since she has been baptized. She testified that the Atonement of the Savior helps us all go forward.

Diane Prescott, our ward primary president, was called out of the audience to share her testimony.

The ward choir sang and then Rob Oakes, our high councilor, spoke. He also spoke about the great Atonement.

My comment: I wonder how many talks and how much study it will take before I can ever understand the Atonement and how it works?  But I do know how thankful I am for it.

We had lesson #36 in Sunday School "Beloved of God, Called to be Saints" from Romans in the Old Testament. It was to remind us that we are all children of God and to encourage us to live worthy of our divine inheritance.

In Relief Society Crystal Herrera taught a very good lesson...and since I didn't record it on that Sunday, now I can't remember the main point.  She had three gift boxes beautifully wrapped with the three main points of the lesson.
That's why I take notes because I can no longer remember like I used to.  But I didn't take notes today because a less active gal whom LaRae and I visit teach came.  She works at Bonanza Motors with Crystal who was teaching, and I sat by her to help her feel more comfortable.  I was so tickled she came, and she said she was happy to be there.

This afternoon we drove over to Twin Falls to the Reynolds Funeral Home for the viewing of our friend Del Traveller.
There was an hour's line or more.  I went to sit on the benches but Walt stood in line....until our friends Karl Nelson and Paul Young saw us.  President Nelson and President Young decided we needed to be by them.  Paul went way back to have Walt come up.  They had us sit in the benches until they got to the front.

President Traveller was a sealer at the Twin Falls Temple.  When we got to the front, the first son in line, Tony, exclaimed: "Dr. Petersen! You delivered me when my parents lived in Burley."
Another fun note about the family:  When they lived in Burley, their second oldest daughter, Ruth Ann was Gary's "girlfriend" in first grade.  They moved away the next year to Twin Falls.
Ruth Ann said the family chose flowers for his casket that showed how he loved to grow a garden.
Del was an agronomist and had worked at the Sugar Factory--both in Burley and then in Twin Falls.  We thought this flower arrangement with sugar beets in it.
It was a tender Sabbath day to help comfort a sorrowing widow, Shirleen, and their grieving children.
Here is Walt as we were leaving the Funeral Home.
Then Walt took a photo of me.
On this Sunday evening, we pray you have had a peaceful and restful Sabbath Day.

We testify of the infinity of life. That death is not the end of us. Our spirit passes from our body but goes on to another realm in heaven where we still live and progress.

This is possible because of the Atonement of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and the Great Plan of Salvation, which is the universal plan of our loving Heavenly Father.

Because of the Restoration of the Gospel we can know of these truths.

We are thankful for the Prophet, Joseph Smith, who was told by Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ of all truths.

The Book of Mormon is Another Testament of Jesus Christ, the Savior.

The Bible is the Testament of Jesus Christ, the Savior.

We have a living Prophet for the whole earth today--Thomas S. Monson--who is the President of the restored Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  The head of the Church is Jesus Christ.

We look forward to life after death and living as families together forever because of the restored Priesthood temple sealing ordinances--binding in heaven that which is bound on earth.

Of these truths we testify, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today...
Walt took one of our scrawny pink petunias out to ask the Evergreen Nursery's owner, Mike Sandman, why they haven't done well in our front flower bed for the past several years.
Mike asked how long we'd been planting them in that spot.
"Forty-four years," I said.
"The soil can get a bacteria in it that's hard to get rid of.  Next spring build it up with some compost and fertilizer and see if that helps," he added.
Here's a photo of some bright sunflowers they have in the front. He said they'd be open through most of September and October on Mon and Fri from 9-5pm, then Sat 9-3pm.
For Family Home Evening, I was so focused in getting the blog caught up, that I really didn't emerge from the computer/office/den until it was about time to go to bed.
I did offer Walt an FHE treat....but he said he'd already gotten one.  But he did have a sugar-free ice cream bar with me, as I sat down to watch the History Channel with him.
(I guess we'll count our blog as our FHE for this week.)

September 15, 2015 - Tuesday
(look for photo of them)
Joe and Marilee Clark have come to Idaho from Arizona to be at the Inauguration on Tuesday of the new BYU-Idaho President.  He is the nephew of Joe--Dr. Clark G. Gilbert.

I know they got some wonderful photos at the Inauguration on Tuesday.
I'll post some photos from Tuesday, September 15 that Janie sent.  She said as BYU-I faculty members Shawn and she were on the 10th row.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf presided.  He was accompanied by four of the Apostles from the Quorum of the Twelve: Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, Elder Dallin H. Oaks, and Elder David B. Bednar.

Here is the new President, Dr. Clark G. Gilbert with President Uchtdorf.

The BYU-Idaho Center was filled to its 15,000 seat capacity.
And here is the printed program.

Meanwhile in Burley...
Here is our sunset on Tuesday, September 15 as we drove to the King Fine Arts Center for the first Community Concert for the 2015-2016 season...
If you like music you'll want to skim through this.
If you don't, just skip to the next day.

We loved the  ♪♫piano playing of Ronnie Kole♫♪. His theme was "Around the World on 88 Keys."  Starting in New Orleans...his hometown and birth of Jazz...he opened with jazz, then on to Liberal, Kansas for the Wizard of Oz ♫♪Over the Rainbow♫♪ then up to Chicago for ♫Boogie♪. Then it was over to Vegas and a ♪Sinatra Medley♫.
"Crossing the Pacific to Sendai, Japan with ♫The Moon Over The Ruined Castle♫ followed by Russia and ♪Dark Eyes♪, Germany ♫Zur Traube♫, Austria ♫Mozart's Turkish March♫ and to the vineyards of France ♫Chateau Gloria♪. Crossing the English Channel to ♪♪Phantom of The Opera Overture♪♪ followed by ♫Music of the Night♫."
"Back to the States and NYC for ♪♪Take the A Train♪♪, then returning to New Orleans to end the first half of the program with ♫Amazing Grace♫."
It was a fascinating hour of music.
When he returned for the second half, he took requests as he walked up the aisle and then down the other aisle.  He wasn't writing anything down, so we wondered how he was going to remember them.  When he finished, there had been 29 requests, which he said he did not remember hardly any.....but his wife had been in the audience writing them down.
He looked at the list for just a few minutes, made about 5 marks and said he would weave all 29 requests around the theme of 3 or 4 that stood out to him that I will put in bold
   Then the music began and went uninterrupted for the next 30 glorious minutes.....all out of his head...♪Laura's Theme♪, ♫Sound of Music♫, ♪Moon River,♪, ♫Battle Hymn of the Republic♫, ♪The Entertainer♪, ♫Malaguena♫, ♪My Wild Irish Rose♪, ♫Clair de lune♫, ♪Mack the Knife♪, ♫Flight of the Bumble Bee♫, ♪Rhapsody in Blue♪, ♫The Shadow of Your Smile♫, ♪My Sweet Embraceable You♪, ♫Georgia♫, ♪Military Themes--Over Hill, Over Dale, Anchors Away, Halls of Montezuma♪, ♫In the Mood♫, ♪Danny Boy♪, ♫Red Sails in the Sunset♫, ♪Let Me Call you Sweetheart♪, ♫Beer Barrell Poka♫, ♪Unforgettable♪, ♫Smile♫. and ♪Sentimental Over You.♪
    The audience was mesmerized.
“Born in Chicago in 1931, Kole was stricken with rheumatic fever as a youngster. He was unable to take part in sports and other strenuous activities like most of his friends so he turned his attention to piano.
We are so happy we were able to attend this Community Concert.
Susan Tuft and others have done a lot of work to keep this going for so many years in Burley.
Susan announced that only 450 tickets have been sold for this season's concerts.  Community Concerts have gone by the wayside in Twin Falls, Boise, and Idaho Falls.  She hopes it can keep going in Burley.

September 16, 2015 - Wednesday
Walt cracked me up this morning when he put his hat on backyards. I don't think I've ever seen him do this before.  He was just teasing and didn't wear it that way very long.
LaRae and I went visiting teaching.  It's great to share the visiting teaching messages this year which are all on "The Divine Attributes of Jesus Christ."  September's message focuses on "The Power and Glory" of the Savior.
Karen Taylor shared some of her huge peaches from the tree in her back yard.  We love the four sisters we get to visit: Karen, Cindy, Bonnie, and Debi.
Walt and I had postponed our day at the temple until tomorrow because we needed to be here for our ward's service project that began at 6:00 p.m.
Clara Gerratt, the darling daughter of our Bishop, came first to collect canned goods for The Helping Hands Mission.  Her cute little brother, Dallin, was with her.
Then the Elders' Quorum came and organized our wood pile so that we could repair the fence at the back of it.
Josh Burgess is the Elders' Quorum President.  And the bishop was among these men helping.  Sorry, I don't know all of their names.
What a great job they did.  They really worked hard!  We were amazed at all they got done.  And appreciate it so much!  Thanks to each one who helped.
Then everyone gathered at the Senior Center for pie and ice cream.  Earlier that evening, the youth had done some entertaining there for senior citizens.
After giving service, it's like "...coming to the end of a perfect day."
When I got home I got a photo of "the last daisy of summer" I thought.  But later another new one popped open.

September 17, 2015 - Thursday
Kathleen Hedberg came over to help us with family history on familysearch.org and we were able to print out a name of Nellie Katie Olsen Petersen's line to have his temple work done.
We love to do...

We did a 1:00 session so we could get back for a viewing for a friend, then my literary book club.
We love our tradition of rendezvousing with Walt's brother and his wife--Dale and Connie.
We did get to the viewing okay of our friend Theda, who will have a graveside service Friday in Malad, Idaho, then be buried by her husband, Bud.  Our parents and we were friends with Bun and Theda Fink from our days together in Wendell, Idaho.
It was good to see LeRoy and Janie Fink, and LeRoy's sister Suzanne and her family.  We also got to talk with Leslie Stoddard, Janie's sister.  They said it's been 8 years since their mother, Fae Stoddard passed away and 3 years since they lost their Dad, Keith.

Tonight was our first gathering for the 2015-2016 season of our Serendipity Book Club at the home of Bonnie Fronk.  Susan Young is president, with Kathy Barrus as vice president.  I get to be the secretary.
Karen Robins gave a delightful report on the life of Margaret Mitchell who wrote Gone With the Wind.
Karen was on a tour last April that went to Atlanta and she got to go to the Margaret Mitchell House and Museum.  She passed around some photos as she talked about different parts of the author's life.
Margaret Mitchell (November 8, 1900 – August 16, 1949) was an American author and journalist. One novel by Mitchell was published during her lifetime, the American Civil War-era novel, Gone with the Wind, [published when she was 35] for which she won the National Book Award for Most Distinguished Novel of 1936[1] and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937.
Margaret was struck by a speeding car driving on the wrong side of the road when she and her husband were crossing the street to go to a movie.  She died five days later, at the age of 49.
Karen brought some fun memorabilia to display.
Bonnie served a delicious heavenly pumpkin pie for the refreshments, plus she had dishes of candy placed throughout the rooms.
We were thrilled to have 18 in attendance, 15 members and 3 guests brought by Bonnie Hansen.
Front row, seated on the floor: Karen Robins, Susan Young, Linda Petersen.
Next row: Ilene Mai; Lorna Arbogast, a guest; Carol Cheney, Jennie Egbert, Karma Lambert, Delores Green, June Tilley.
Next row: Kathy Barrus, Bonnie Hansen, Cheryl Hansen Fillmore, Bonnie's daughter visiting here from Loveland, Ohio; Dawn Jiang, visiting here from Shenyang, China; Gladys Harrison.
Last row: Bonnie Fronk, Marilyn Gibbons.
Ilene Mai took a photo so I could be in it, but it didn't take.
After our great book reviews, it is nice to mingle and talk with each other.
We thank our "hostest with the mostest," Bonnie Fronk.
Here is a recent photo of Ken & Bonnie's outstanding family.
We are looking forward to October when we hope to visit the Burley Chamber of Commerce, being arranged by June Tilley.

September 18, 2015 - Friday
We had delicious and sweet fresh peaches for breakfast.  They were the ones Karen Taylor gave us this week.
Then we went to look at the fence behind the woodpile for Walt to figure out how he's going to take down the old boards that need to be replaced.
So we went to the hardware store to get a tool to remove nails so he could remove the broken down boards from the fence behind the wood pile.
It was hard for him to decide on just the right one...which turned out to be the red one.
Walt drove the pickup because it hardly gets used.

Walt is still amazed at how neatly the men from the Elders' Quorum stacked the wood during their service project here Wednesday.
This is showing some of the coal that was at the back of the wood pile.
In the middle of our snowball bush, a tree is growing that needs to be taken out.
It's so convenient to have the back gate working easily.  Thanks again to our kids and grandkids for that Labor Day Weekend project!
Walt took a photo of my sitting on my Dad's old saw horse that he must have made in the 1950s....so it's about 65 years old.
We love to have the flag flying in front of our home.
Then it was back to working on the fence.
And the nail remover worked well!
Friday evening we were going to watch a movie, but I kept working on our blog till it was too late.

September 19, 2015 - Saturday
Walt has been working on this little vanity for several days.  It was a surprise Christmas gift from Walt to me several years ago.  The light plastic strip that held the drawer in place broke.
Walt has four things on his "to-do" list to get done today.
1. Exercise.
2. Finish tearing down the broken parts of the fence behind the wood pile.
3. Finish this vanity.
4. Watch the BYU vs UCLA football game.
I have four things on my "To Do" list:
1. Exercise.
2. Hang up the clean clothes.
3. Get my blog caught up.
4. Watch the BYU-UCLA football game.

We love being invited to watch the football games with Ruth Melling and Steve and Michelle Gerratt and Tyler, Clara, Ryan, and Dallin.
BYU at least scared UCLA.
"Two-way BYU standout Harvey Langi intercepted two of those passes in the first half, with the first killing a UCLA drive that had taken the Bruins just nine yards from pay dirt."
We thought the Cougars played really well, even tho they lost in the last few minutes.
vs

BYU COUGARS=23 were ranked 19 this week.

UCLA BRUINS = 24     were ranked 10 this week.
Next Week in the college football world...

The Cougars’ difficult schedule continues with a trip to the Big House to face Michigan on Saturday, September 26. (We think the game is 12:00 noon EDT?)
. UCLA will have a chance to rise further up the rankings when it opens conference play in the desert with a road contest against No. 20 Arizona.

September 20, 2015 - Sunday
We are grateful for the opportunity to renew our baptismal covenants by partaking of the Sacrament in Sacrament Meeting.
Our block is from 10:50 a.m. to 2:50 p.m.

Sammy (Samantha) Heiner gave a very good talk on revelation. Ending by saying she believes in revelation and is thankful for it.

Sister Philippa Sutton, who was married in April, said she and Lloyd moved to Burley in June.  She taught us well about the Plan of Salvation. Without the great gift of the Atonement we could not repent...need sadness so we can know joy...weakness to know strength. When we have trials we need to ask God for help.

Alma 14:11-12 explains that Christ died to be resurrected. Death is another part of the Plan of Salvation. Knowledge and experience are what we take with us to heaven.

For all the inventions that have happened on this earth, God already had made all the necessary components on earth.  Like for cars, there was everything necessary for the fuel here.

This earth is where we learn to be like God and to become Christ-like.  She closed with testimony and that she is grateful for the beautiful earth God created for us to live on and work through the Plan of Salvation.

Jessica Gee played a nice violin solo of "A Child's Prayer."

Russ Hale spoke about "How God Answers Prayers."  He said we need to know how to pray in order to have answers come.
1. Address Heavenly Father correctly.
2. Pray from the heart
3. Wait for an answer
4. Remember to thank Heavenly Father

He shared a story about a woman who was sick and only felt like having some homemade bread to eat.  Her friend was at her home, but they did not have the ingredients to make homemade bread.  Her friend had to leave.  Later that afternoon, a member of her ward came with a new loaf of homemade bread.
The sick woman thought her friend had called that woman.
She had not.
This member of the ward told her that she was about to bake a loaf of bread that morning when she was impressed that she needed to bake two loaves and to take one to this other member, whom she hardly knew, and did not know that she was sick.
She drove 30 minutes across the city to take her the bread.

The Lord uses people on earth to answer prayers.

On his mission, Russ and his companion were not having much success, but they kept going out to find people.  They saw a man at his mailbox.  He let them come into his apartment and teach him.

He told them: "I don't know why I went back out to my mailbox today.  I had already gotten my mail."
The missionaries told him: "You went back to your mailbox because the Lord wanted us to teach you today.  It was an answer to our prayer...and to your prayer."

President Tracy King was called on by the Bishop to give some remarks.  He said the Proclamation to the World: The Family presented from the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles is revelation from God.
President King says he prays each morning to meet someone to teach. One day this past week he was late coming home for lunch, about 2:30 in the afternoon.  A salesman came to the door selling rugs.
He was ready to turn him away, then he thought: "I prayed for someone to teach today."  So he said to the man, "I'm not going to buy a rug, but there's a reason you rang my door bell.  I laid out the Plan of Salvation and talked with him about 30 minutes."

The salesman said he and his wife had just said that week that they needed to change things in their life.  He left with a commitment that he would listen to the missionaries.
President King testified that Jesus Christ loves each one of us. Our relationships are so important here on earth.  That is why Heavenly Father put us in families.
We sustain the Prophet and the Apostles. President King testified tht if we listen with our heart and approach General Conference with a prayer in our hearts, we will say 'That's just what I needed."

Sunday School was Gospel Doctrine Lesson #34 "Be Reconciled to God" was given by David Hansen because our teacher, Robert Watts was out of town.

Brother (Bishop) established what "reconcile" means as taught in 2 Corinthians

In Relief Society the lesson was "Beware of Pride" -- Lesson 18 from Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Ezra Taft Benson, (2014) 229-40.
“Pride is the universal sin, the great vice.
The antidote for pride is humility.”
Amanda Hernández taught the lesson and had us divide into groups to come up with some of our ideas of what pride is.

"President Benson said: 'Pride is characterized by 'What do I want out of life?' rather than by 'What would God have me do with my life?'  It is self-will as opposed to God's will.  It is the fear of man over the fear of God..."

"In the words of C.S. Lewis: 'Pride gets no pleasure out of having something, only out of having more of it than the next man. . . . It is the comparison that makes you proud: the pleasure of being above the rest. Once the element of competition has gone, pride has gone." (Mere Christianity, New York: Macmillan, 1952, pp. 109-10.)
Sister Hernández closed her lesson with this poem, and with her testimony for the need to give up pride in our lives.

“My Name is Pride” by Beth Moore
My name is Pride. I am a cheater.
I cheat you of your God-given destiny…
because you demand your own way.
I cheat you of contentment…
because you “deserve better than this.”
I cheat you of knowledge…
because you already know it all.
I cheat you of healing…
because you are too full of you to forgive.
I cheat you of holiness…
because you refuse to admit when you are wrong.
I cheat you of vision…
because you’d rather look in the mirror
than out a window.
I cheat you of genuine friendship…
because nobody’s going to know the real you.
I cheat you of love…
because real romance demands sacrifice.
I cheat you of greatness in heaven…
because you refuse to wash another’s feet on earth.
I cheat you of God’s glory…
because I convinced you to seek your own.
My name is Pride. I am a cheater.
You like me because you think I’m always looking out for you.
Untrue.
I’m looking to make a fool of you.
God has so much for you, I admit, but don’t worry…
If you stick with me you’ll never know.

Let's remember what President Benson taught:
"Humility responds to God's will--to the fear of His judgments and to the needs of those around us.  To the proud, the applause of the world rings in their ears; to the humble, the applause of heaven warms their hearts." ("Cleansing the Inner Vessel," Ensign, May 1986, 6-7.)

Alma 5:27-28 says this about pride:
"Have ye walked, keeping yourselves blameless before God? Could ye say, if ye were called to die at this time, within yourselves, that ye have been sufficiently humble?  That your garments have been cleansed and made white through the blood of Christ, who will come to redeem his people from their sins?
"Behold, are ye stripped of pride?  I say unto you, if ye are not ye are not prepared to meet God. Behold ye must prepare quickly; for the kingdom of heaven is soon at hand, and such an one hath not eternal life."

President Benson's great talk on pride was given in the April 1989 General Conference and is found in the Ensign, May 1989, 4.

"The Savior, who is 'meek and lowly in heart' (Matthew 11:29), is our great example of humility."
We pray you have had a restful and peaceful Sabbath Day.
On this Sabbath evening, we testify that...
1 - Heavenly Father lives and loves us and knows us by name.
2 - Jesus Christ is His Son, our Savior and Redeemer.
3 - Joseph Smith is the Prophet of the Restoration of all things.
4 - The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was restored to the earth in 1830 by Heavenly Father and His Son Jesus Christ.
5 - The Book of Mormon is Another Testament of Jesus Christ, as the Bible is the Testament of Jesus Christ.
6 - President Thomas S. Monson is the living Prophet of God for the whole earth today.
In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
