Located close to the Pacific coastal plain, Pacaya Volcano is a complex of peaks that has been active since around 20,000 years ago. It is the most popular volcano in Guatemala due to its attainable level of hiking. Active and unpredictable, Pacaya Volcano is a constant show of ash clouds and lava flow. Brave visitors can hike almost up to the cone and have a closer look at the flowing lava!   Insider tip: Make sure you consult first with the local authorities if hiking is possible during the time you are visiting. Sometimes the Park closes due to the extreme volcanic activity.

"I think this is like week 30 but who knows i love the mission! This week started with a guy fixing our ac unit which was mad needed bc we have been sleeping in sweat the past week..."

Elder Brewer... tallest in your Mission         I love your emails. Congratulations on being made a District Leader.   Christ IS super powerful, and super, super cool. That’s why you are serving Him on this mission so others in Honduras will also know how powerful and cool He is... Love, Grama Petersen ...and Grampa Petersen from heaven."

              MONDAY,

AUGUST 26, 2024 CONTINUED...                           Family is Everything...

and so are friends...

Jayden came for my Home Health Physical Therapy session.

 MONDAY, AUGUST 26, 2024

Family is Everything...

          ...and so are friends.

Empty Nesters' Gathering at                                the home of Mark & Tammy Ballard

We were greeted at the front door by
MaKell NcPherson, Mark & Tammy's niece.
She kindly helped the ones who needed to use the elevator to get down to the back yard.
Thank you for your help, MaKell.
There's a plaque that says:
"If you're lucky enough to live by a lake,
You're lucky enough."
Then there are those of us who are lucky
enough to have friends that live by
Utah Lake and invite all of us over.
Mark & Tammy furnished pulled pork with rolls and lemonade. The others brought side dishes and desserts.
The ones I know: Kathie brought her special family-recipe of baked beans, Jodi - homemade mac 'n cheese, Linda H brought the yummy potato salad (almost a lost art). Dottie is the one who made that delicious fresh peach pie, and MaryAnn shared her family's favorite cookiesCowboy Cookies from her Mom's recipe. {I couldn't remember if her Mom was Serbian or Croation--here's her reply:

“My mother was both, GrandMother was Croation, Grand Father was Serbian... both from SerboCroatia.... met in United States."

Everything brought was delicious...tossed salad, fruit bowls, relish plates, several desserts. I only got to have the peach pie and MaryAnn's cookie.

Paul said the chocolate cream pie was yummy. CaroI brought it...she saod she couldn'r get it to ser up so it was more like a pudding in a pie shell' think there were some cupcakes and maybe other desserts I didn't see.
I texted to find out...

"Eileen, I brought the three cupcakes and the chocolate chip and Eminem cookies — Jeanie Larsen"

Kathy Skousen brought a vegetable platter with ranch dip.

"Francine and Dave Johnson brought the fruit salad bowl.
Thank you for a wonderful evening."
Sharon brought the orange fluff salad. Several have asked her for the recipe, which she shared at lunch bunch.

Here's Tammy's text about the food:  "Mark and I provided the smoked pulled pork (our son Carl cooked it on his Treager all day until 1 am at night). And we brought the bbq sauces and salsa And lemonade. But was the food amazing. Once you have the list of food please send it to me. The Grahams brought the Mac and cheese. Dottie Thayn brought the peach pie. Fletchers brought the cabbage slaw. LeAnn brought the chips."

Breath-taking views of the lake and Ballard's lovely back yard with it's waterfall.
I counted 32... Mark & Tammy, Henry & Laura, Sharon & Howard, Bryant & Kathie, Dave & Francine, Paul & Dottie, Reno & Tris, Doug & Jodi, Allen & Jennie, Steve & Jeanie, Dean & Nadine, Andrew, Clyde, Ken, Kathy, LeAnn, MaryAnn, Linda, Carol, SuzAnne, Eileen.

Savory food...
                   ...and great camaraderie.
 Dottie & Paul...
I learned he had been a Seminary teacher...
and they served missions in Bulgaria
and Uganda, Africa.
He told me Utah Lake is 26 miles long.
And the miles from the south end of
Utah Lake to the north end of Salt Lake
are the same as the distances of the
Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea!
Jodi, Jeanie, Reno, Linda H, Dottie...
and Tris, Laura, Henry--but not seen in photo, then on end Doug, Jodi, Jeanie, Reno...
Showing some of the 32 Empty Nesters who could come...
Clyde, Reno, Jodi...
Eileen sat across from D
ottie & Paul.
When Dottie started to sit on that side I asked her
if she'd rather come over on my side so she could
see the lake. She laughed and aid: "I live on the lake."
Their home is on the south side of Mark & Tammy,
and they built it in 1999.
Kathy, Carol, SuzAnne. Kathy said Paul
had a zoom conference call come that kept him
from being able to come.
SuzAnne is our friend who lives further south
in Saratoga Springs. Val Green got her involved
in the lunch bunch when SuzAnne moved from Bluffdale
a couple years ago when her husband passed away.
.
Bryant, Dave, Steve, Jeanie,
and other side of table, Mark.

Dave, Steve, Jeanie, Jennie,
standing, Allen.
Tammy, LeAnn. And bareley see Mark.
Wish we had gotten a photo together of
our host 'n hostest with the mostest--
Mark & Tammy. Thank you for a
wonderful evening of camaradarie at
the charming environment you have
worked hard at creating.
Francine, Mark, Linda H, standing LeAnn, Carol. On other side of table Kathie, Bryant.
Jeanie, SuzAnne.
Paul, Dottie, Tammy.
Jeanie, Steve, Francine, Mark...
as the mountains glow by Utah Lake
while the sun sets on a lovely evening
as we gathered together deepening
bonds of friendship.
Tammy shared the photos she took, and asked me to share the photos I took. This is my answer to her:
"Tammy,  I did get some photos that I’m putting in my blog and will send them to you. I also have the names of the 32 who were there. Wish I’d gotten a photo of your darling niece, McKell who greeted us at the front door and helped us get down in the elevator. Wonderful gathering, meal, conversations and bonding at your home and gardens that have such a welcoming spirit of the Savior’s and your love. 💜 Eileen"

Family is Everything….
I've been typing Walt's missionary journal.
When he left Salt Laker City--Saturday, August 21, 1954--on the train-- "after just four days' training in the 'mission home' which was in a hotel in Salt Laker City,
his family was at the train station to tell him goodbye, but he said he "called Barbara" from a payphone booth to tell her goodbye. So I copied her photo from the high school annual to show our posterity who Walt's girl friend was when he left on his mission.
She was 17 just starting her senior year at Wendell High School (Idaho).
The rule then was a young man had to be 20 years old to serve a mission, so Walt had completed two years of college, majoring in civil engineering.

Barbara was pretty, talented, and smart. I feel really blessed that it didn't work out when he got home from his mission 2 1/2 years later (March 1957).
I was just starting my 9th grade when Walt left on his mission in 1954.
In photo of class officers I'm second from left. I'm first in the single pictures, because
my maiden was Albertson.
I am loving typing his journal. I'm up to November 1954. It's a spiritual journey seeing what he was doing and feeling each day
as he served.

Here are some classic books that have been adapted into movies:
  • Little Women
A cozy movie adaptation of the story about the March sisters' lives and ambitions. The 2019 film modernizes the language of the original story, written 150 years ago.
  • The Lord of the Rings
A series of three books that were adapted into award-winning movies. The series is considered by many to be one of the greatest fantasy novels ever written.
  • To Kill a Mockingbird
A best-selling book that was adapted into a cinematic masterpiece.
  • Pride and Prejudice
A classic of English literature that has been adapted into motion pictures.
  • Jane Eyre
A story about a young woman who endures abuse as a child and accepts a job as governess.
  • The Godfather
A highly regarded movie series that started with a book by Mario Puzo.
  • The Princess Bride
A classic romance/adventure movie based on the book by William Goldman.
  • Sense and Sensibility
A 1995 screenplay adaptation of the Jane Austen novel, directed by Ang Lee.
  • The Chronicles of Narnia
A series of children's literature books by C.S. Lewis that have been adapted into films.

John helped his Mom
move to Saratoga Springs, Utah
from Burley/Declo/Springdale, Idaho
yesterday,
September 3, 2022.
Here's what one of John's
sisters wrote about the move.
Geni's face book post today...
We [Geni and her husband] moved a lot when my children were younger. It was hard but they always had one constant…this home. It’s hard to believe that this modest, small house could possibly hold so many memories; so much laughter, a measure of tears, some family arguments but mostly lots and lots of love. We moved my mom out of this home yesterday [Sat, Sep 3, 2022]…and said goodbye to the heart of our family. This home, this place, this feeling, that we all love so much. It sheltered us when we needed to go there and heal…it held countless Thanksgiving dinners and backyard campouts, and family reunions. It was where my dad took his last breath and it gave us strength and held us up. I know it’s only a place. I know there will be new adventures and many more reunions and family gatherings, but I will always miss this little, quirky house with its bright orange kitchen countertops and outdated bathrooms…and the tangible feeling of peace and love that radiated to all of us when we opened the front door. It feels like such a loss…but as with any loss, you have to be so grateful you had such a wonderful place to call home. #idahome #grateful...

Smile because it happened."}

and tiny gold chains sewn
into it.

 Emma, Katy, Tammy

Cousins happy to
be together...
Katy took a photo of me
by the Tahiti quilt because
I love palm trees.

We served  9 1/2 years on
4 missions in countries
that have palm trees.

(Actually, Walt served
12 years because
his mission as a young
man was in Uruguay-
Paraguay for 2 1/2 years.)

This beautiful book
about Springville
was only $16 with tax.
We got to stop by
Mark's impressive
FlowMax Manufacturing
Company that is in
Springville.

 Thanks for driving
us, Tammy.

We enjoy having
lunch at Magleby's and
going to the Quilt Show.

We always miss those
who can't come.
