The Many Names of

       Jesus Christ

in the Book of Mormon

— A Deeper Look into 80 Sacred Titles

One of the things I love most about the Book of Mormon is how powerfully and repeatedly it testifies of Jesus Christ. While we often see the name “Jesus” or “Jesus Christ,” the Book of Mormon refers to Him by dozens of sacred titles—each one revealing something different about His divine nature, His mission, and His relationship to us.

I’ve been looking at this for a long time—but especially closely over the past few weeks.

And the deeper I look, the more clearly I see just how Christ-centered this sacred record truly is.

Across its 531 pages, the Book of Mormon references Christ more than 4,000 times—that’s an average of once every 1.7 verses. This isn’t by accident. It’s the very purpose of the record.

“And we talk of Christ, we rejoice in Christ, we preach of Christ, we prophesy of Christ…”

— 2 Nephi 25:26

These many titles reflect not only how ancient prophets viewed Him—but how we can come to know Him. Below I’ve grouped them into eight categories, with each title paired with a scripture reference. Together, this list forms one of the more complete portraits of the Savior found anywhere in scripture.

1. Divine Sonship (10 titles)

These names affirm His sacred relationship to the Father:

• Son of God (2 Nephi 2:3)

• Only Begotten Son (Jacob 4:5)

• Beloved Son (3 Nephi 11:7)

• Son of the Most High God (Alma 11:24)

• Son of the Eternal Father (2 Nephi 26:1)

• Son of Righteousness (3 Nephi 25:2)

• Firstborn (Mosiah 5:7)

• Begotten of the Father (Mosiah 15:2)

• Son of the Living God (Alma 5:50)

• Child of Mary (Mosiah 3:8)

2. Messianic Roles (10 titles)

These names describe His prophetic mission to save and sanctify:

• Messiah (2 Nephi 2:6)

• Sanctifier (3 Nephi 27:20)

• Restorer (Alma 40:23)

• Just One (2 Nephi 9:41)

• Christ (2 Nephi 25:19)

3. Priestly and Atoning Roles (10 titles)

• Ransom (Mosiah 15:1)

• Propitiation (Alma 34:10)

• Merciful One (Alma 33:11)

• Mediator of the New Covenant (2 Nephi 2:27)

4. Royal and Leadership Titles (10 titles)

These names describe His divine authority and kingship:

• King of Kings (2 Nephi 10:14)

• Lord of Lords (Mosiah 3:5)

• King (Mosiah 5:15)

• Lord (2 Nephi 2:2)

• Prince of Peace (Mosiah 15:18)

• Eternal Judge (Moroni 10:34)

• Lawgiver (3 Nephi 15:5)

• Governor (Mosiah 29:11)

• Ruler over All (Mosiah 3:5)

• Commander (Alma 18:3)

5. Divine Identity and Nature (10 titles)

These titles testify that Jesus Christ is God:

• Bread of Life (3 Nephi 20:8 — implied through sacrament)

• Living Water (1 Nephi 11:25)

• The Word (Alma 34:6)

• The Light (Mosiah 16:9)

His Declaration to the Nephites

When the resurrected Jesus appeared to the people in ancient America, He declared Himself using words that draw these many roles into one eternal reality:

“Behold, I am Jesus Christ, whom the prophets testified shall come into the world.

And behold, I am the light and the life of the world…”

— 3 Nephi 11:10–11

Why This Matters

Each name tells us something different:

• As God, He creates and governs.

• As Redeemer, He sacrifices and saves.

• As Messiah, He fulfills prophecy.

• As Shepherd and Advocate, He leads, pleads, and heals.

The Book of Mormon doesn’t just mention Christ—it reveals Him.

It invites us not just to learn about Him, but to know Him.

Not as a figure from ancient history—but as a living, loving, present Savior.

Which of His names speaks to you most today?

Leave a comment—I’d love to hear what title has lifted you lately.

Lately, I’ve clung to “Mediator” of the New Covenant. (2 Nephi 2:27-28). Because I know I need His mercy—and I trust Him as the One who paid the price for it.

OLD AGE

Aging is not just wrinkles.

Not just gray hair.

Not just a number on a document.

It is the moment when you finally begin to understand that life does not have to be chased all the time.

It has to be lived.

Yes, the body changes.

The face is no longer the same as it was in youth.

Movements become slower.

The mirror tells the truth more honestly than before.

But there is something time cannot take away.

The heart.

Because the heart does not age the way the body does.

It remembers the first love.

The first dreams.

The first pain.

The first loss.

The first joy that made you want to embrace the entire world.

The soul has no age.

It stays where we first learned how to truly feel.

And perhaps with the years comes the most important understanding:

every age is the right age.

20 gives courage.

30 gives strength to build.

40 gives honesty with yourself.

50 gives depth.

60 gives wisdom.

70 gives a calm that no longer needs to prove anything to anyone.

Every stage of life brings its own gift.

And growing older is not a defeat.

It is a privilege.

Because not everyone gets to see their gray hair.

Not everyone gets to watch their children grow.

Not everyone gets the chance to greet another spring.

Not everyone wakes up in the morning and can simply say: “I am still here.”

Too often, we fight against time.

We hide wrinkles.

We feel ashamed of age.

We compare ourselves to old photographs.

We try to look as if the years have not touched us.

But maybe the real victory is not in still looking young on the outside.

It is in not growing old on the inside.

Keeping curiosity.

Not losing tenderness.

Still being amazed.

Laughing sincerely.

Loving without fear.

Being grateful for simple things.

Seeing beauty even in quiet days.

Because the secret is not to look young.

The secret is to have a soul that is alive.

Until the very last day.

Then every year stops feeling like a loss.

And becomes a gift.

Do not be afraid of age.

Be afraid of passing through life without ever truly feeling it.

Because growing older does not mean fading away.

Sometimes it means finally beginning to shine from within. 💕

"We honor our pioneer members across the world not because they were perfect but because they overcame hardships, made sacrifices, aspired to be Christlike, and were striving to build faith and be one with the Savior. Their oneness with the Savior made them one with each other. This principle is true for you and me today.

The clarion call to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is to strive to be a Zion people who are of one heart and one mind and dwell in righteousness."

--Eliza R. Snow
"O, My Father"

President Dallin H.Oaks said...

"For as we have a Father in heaven, so also we have a Mother there, a glorified, exalted, ennobled Mother. That is a startling doctrine, I recognize, to some folk, and yet we ought to be governed by reason in giving consideration to this doctrine which is a revelation from God" (Sermons and Mission Services of Melvin Joseph Ballard, 205).

"For reasons the Lord has not revealed, we do not know much about a Heavenly Mother. But we have been told that the purpose of life on earth is to give us the opportunity to grow toward being like our Heavenly Father. And we know that we are children of Heavenly Parents. So we know that we have a Heavenly Mother or Mothers. But for reasons the Lord has not revealed, we do not know much about our Heavenly Mother. But we know we must have one because both men and women are working for exaltation . . ." - President Oaks

Jesus Christ came to earth as The Only Begotten of the Father and fulfilled the Atonement. He is the Redeemer of all.

“An omnicompetent God leaves all mortals free to choose, but how grateful we should be that God chose long, long ago to rescue and to resurrect all His children through the Atonement of His Son. Nevertheless, some reject and many are indifferent to these and other divine beckonings, mostly because they are too caught up in the cares of the world. They are strangers to the Savior, who is far from the thoughts and intents of their hearts.”
