it's such a strange thing."

Note from Eileen: You will notice I call                              my blog: "Traces of Time..."

On this blog I share with family and friends my daily thoughts, doings, what interests me, and--at times--tributes to my eternal sweetheart, Walt, who graduated to heaven on 8-21-2020 at age 86.

Dedicated to our seven children--Janie, Gary, Steve, David, Julie, Brian, Jen, their spouses, our 39 grandchildren, 9 spouses married to our grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, 1 due in April and posterity to come.

So our posterity now numbers 66. Number 67 due in April.

Info from Wikipedia:  We all loved him!

"Walter Leland Cronkite Jr. (November 4, 1916 – July 17, 2009) was an American broadcast journalist who served as anchorman for the CBS Evening News[1] for 19 years, from 1962 to 1981. During the 1960s and 1970s, he was often cited as "the most trusted man in America" after being so named in an opinion poll.[2][3][4] Cronkite received numerous honors including two Peabody Awards, a George Polk Award, an Emmy Award and in 1981 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Jimmy Carter.

"Cronkite reported many events from 1937 to 1981, including bombings in World War II; the Nuremberg trials; combat in the Vietnam War;[5] the Dawson's Field hijackingsWatergate; the Iran Hostage Crisis; and the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, civil rights pioneer Martin Luther King Jr., and Beatles musician John Lennon. He was also known for his extensive coverage of the U.S. space program, from Project Mercury to the Moon landings to the Space Shuttle. He was the only non-NASA recipient of an Ambassador of Exploration award.[6] Cronkite is known for his departing catchphrase, "And that's the way it is", followed by the date of the broadcast.[7]

"Cronkite died at his home in 2009, at the age of 92, from cerebrovascular disease."

               Family is Everything...
Walt's Birthday Remembrance
He would have been 90 today.

APRIL 17 IS WALT'S

BIRTHDAY

"Truly successful decision-making relies on a balance between deliberate and instinctive thinking."
— Malcolm Gladwell, author
Walt made a lot of decisions

in his life. Many affecting

other people's lives for good.

He not only went by the Gladwell

quote but by prayer and inspiration.

Whenever he was confronted with

a situation, he never acted until

he knew both sides.

Here's  my face book post:

Happy Heavenly Birthday to Walt Petersen

--my Eternal Sweetheart--

today April 17, 2024 - 90th B-day

Remembrance. It's his fourth one in heaven.

Walt died from Lewy Body Dementia

on August 21, 2020.

He was born in Wendell, Idaho, April 17, 1934.

We had moved to Burley, Idaho, in 1966 after

medical school at Washington University

in St. Louis, internship in Minneapolis,

and military service at an Indian Hospital

in Talihina, Oklahoma which included

some time on the Coast Guard

Cutter Chatauqua in the

Pacific Ocean.

(The U.S. Public Health Service

furnishes the medical needs

of the Coast Guard--

anyway it did in the 1960s).

We lived in Burley, Idaho

for 52 years -

1966-2018 before moving to

Saratoga Springs, Utah,

when our kids determined

our health wasn't good

enough for us to live alone.

We are thankful for their

watchful care of us.

Julie's post from 2022:

Dad, you were larger than life

but you were also just my dad.

I know I’m one of the lucky ones

to have had such a great influence

right in my home.

I’m so grateful

my children were able to live

with you two different times

in their lives.

I love and miss you very much.

Wishing you a

Happy Heavenly Birthday! 💙

Remembering Walt on his

90th Birthday...

This painting by Norman Rockwell

could have been Walt going off

to college...

his Dad was a hard-working carpenter

of very modest means.

Walt took a train to the state university -

University of Idaho --

265 miles from Wendell, Idaho

to Moscow, Idaho.

(Pronounced Mos-co, in

Russia theirs is Mos-cow.)

 And when I got engaged

to Walt, his Mom said to me:

"Eileen, you know Walt has

always had a dog."

Norman Rockwell painting

for the

Saturday Evening Post.

Details show the father, a hard-working man

of modest means, was going to flag

the train to pick up his son.

The wistful dog is a priceless inclusion.

Before he grew up and

went off to college...

here are some growing

up years . . .

Walt - 1938 - Age 4

with his dog Peggy.

Summer 1940

Walt - age 6

Ray 32, Jane 29, Bonnie 10,

Phyllis 8, Dale almost 1.

Walt - Age 6

Walt - First Grade

Walt - Freshman - 1948-1949

Wendell High School

Walt 14, Freshman - Dale 9, 4th grade

Big Winter '48-'49

Living in basement

Wendell, Idaho

Walt - Winter 1950

Sophomore - age 15, Dale 10.

Dad had just finished their home

above the basement where

they had lived for 3 years.

Walt - Sophomore 1949-50

Played on Varsity team

Walt wouldn't smile

in photos because of

the gap between his

front teeth.

Walt Senior year - Class of 1952

Wendell High School

Walt - 1952-53 was on the U of Idaho

freshman basketball team.

He was also in the ROTC.

Walt - 1953-54

The coach at Boise Jr College

recruited him to play basketball

his second year in Boise.

Walt - Sophomore at
Boise Jr. College
1953-1954
{It became Boise State College}

Walt - Age 19
with his sister Phyllis
and brother Dale
Walt - Aug 1954 to Mar 1957
A young man had to be 20 to
serve a mission and a
foreign mission was an extra
6 months to learn the language
in the country because there
was no MTC.
August 17, 1954 received
his endowment in the Salt Lake Temple.
Walt - Aug 18-21, 1954,
Wednesday to Saturday
he had 4 days of instruction
on being a missionary.
On August 19, the group
of 127 missionaries did
a session in the
Salt Lake Temple.

These four days also
included being set apart by
a General Authority. Walt was
set apart by Elder Sterling W. Sill
on August 20, 1954 at the Church
Administration Building.

He boarded the train at 5:30 p.m.
on August 21 with 12 other
missionaries--4 going to Brazil,
 5 to Argentina, and
4 (including Walt)
going to Uruguay/Paraguay.

They were 48 hours in
New York City getting
their visas, and boarded
 Ship S.S. Argentina on the
afternoon of Thursday,
August 26.

It took 20 days to
arrive at
Montevideo, Uruguay on
Tuesday, September 14, 1954.

Walt's first assignment that
evening was to go to the
the Mission Basketball
Team practice.
"Deseret" was the name
of the team.
 One of the highlights of
his 30-month mission--
during the 9 months he was
an Assistant to the President--
was to travel for 2 weeks with
the Apostle Henry D. Moyle
and be his translator.
This included a meeting with
the dictator of Paraguay,
President Stroessner.

Walt returned home from his
mission in March 1957 and
turned 23 in April.

He enrolled that spring
quarter at BYU,
but since he could finish his
engineering major a year
sooner at University of Idaho,
he went back there for the
Fall Semester of 1957.
At the end of three weeks
back at the U of I, he was
thinking about medicine vs
engineering. He went to talk
to the pre-med advisor and
within an hour he had switched
out of his engineering  courses
to pre-med classes.

His Dad & Mom, sister Phyllis,
and brother Dale came to his
college graduation in May 1959.

(Actually, Dale had also been at
the U of I with his brother those two
years 1957-1959, and Dale stayed
with his engineering major, but after his mission to Argentina he finished at BYU.)
Walt's U of Idaho graduation photo.
Was it the right decision for
Walt to change to medicine?
...he said to me on his graduation
day from medical school:

"I could have been happy as an engineer,
but not now that I've graduated
in medicine."

Walt - June 1963
Graduates from
Washington University
School of Medicine

"Dr. Petersen"
Did I miss something?
Oh...just that Walt found his
eternal sweetheart in Idaho
in the summer of 1960 and...
...they got married on
June 14, 1961 in the
Salt Lake Temple
Our reception was in Gooding, Idaho
June 17, 1961
...one of my favorite  photos
from the reception.
...Walt was all smiles at
the end of the reception.
Walt did his one-year
family physician internship
at the Minneapolis General Hospital
June 1963-June 1964
Walt became a father on the
very day he began his internship--
two weeks after he graduated
from medical school...
He was age 29.

Grama A and my sister, Janice, came
on the train from Gooding, Idaho
to help us.

My mother had become a
grandmother at age 43.
My Dad was age 50.

For Walt's parents,

Janie was their 12th grandchild.
Ray was age 41 and Jane 38
when they had become
grandparents in 1948.
Mary Jane "Janie" Petersen
born in June 1963
Walt - U.S. Public Health Service
June 1964 - June 1966
We had 7 children in 11 years...

When we had seven we
said that was heaven
and called it good.

Janie, Gary, Steve, David,
Julie, Brian, Jen.
Walt - Family Physician
and Surgeon in
Burley Idaho - July 1, 1966
to January 14, 2005
Walt took flying lessons at the
Burley Airport in 1967,
and got a small Cherokee
Piper airplane.
Then we had a 2-engine
Aztec with two other
physicians for a while. Walt flew
us in that to a medical meeting
in Guadalajara,
Mexico in
October 1972.
Then he ended up with his
dream airplane--a Cessna 206
turbo-charged (means it was
like always taking off at sea level).
It had the high wings that could
land on "pasture airstrips" without
loose rocks damaging the wings.
He was partners with
Newel Nelson and Leo Brown.
Later Mike Wheeler became
a partner, also.
Walt's happy place...
to fly with his wife and kids,
grandkids and friends...
...with Gary
...with Cortney and Kelsey
...with Kimble

"High Flight is a 1941 sonnet written by war poet John Gillespie Magee Jr. and inspired by his experiences as a fighter pilot of the Royal Canadian Air Force in World War II. Magee began writing the poem on 18 August, while stationed at No. 53 OTU outside London, and mailed a completed manuscript to his family on 3 September, three months before he died in a training accident. Originally published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, it was widely distributed when Magee became one of the first post-Pearl Harbor American casualties of the war on 11 December, after which it was exhibited at the American Library of Congress in 1942. Owing to its gleeful and ethereal portrayal of aviation, along with its allegorical interpretation of death and transcendence, the poem has been featured prominently in aviation memorials across the world, including that of the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986."

High Flight

"Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I’ve climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of – wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov’ring there,
I’ve chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air....

Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I’ve topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace.
Where never lark, or even eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
– Put out my hand, and touched the face of God."

Walt & Eileen - 1970s
...with three yeas out when
serving June 1995 to
July 1998 as a
Mission President for the
Mexico Merida Mission.
Presidente Petersen
loved his missionaries.
They worked very hard,
bicycled a lot of places,
then it changed to all walking.

"Dr. Petersen" did surgery on a lot
of ingrown toe nails
during these three years.
Hermana Petersen loved
the missionaries, too.
How blessed we were to
serve with such outstanding
young Elders y Hermanas!
When we finished our 3 years
in July 1998, the mission office
(behind us) and a chapel to the
other side of us were torn down
and the
Merida Mexico Temple
was built there.

he retired having just delivered
his last baby of about 3500.
I enlarged photo to see Walt better.
Recording in the chart...
Here's a photo of our

Walt then served three more
missions with his wife:

2. Area Medical Advisor
for 2000 missionaries in
the 12 missions in Central America
for 23 months.
March 2005 to February 2007.

In between these missions,
we served as temple workers in
the Boise Idaho Temple,
driving 320-miles round trip
each Saturday from
March 2007-March 2008.

During this same year
Walt served on the
Twin Falls Temple Dedication
 Committee  with other
former stake presidents
from throughout the
Magic Valley--one of them
his best friend from Wendell
High School days--
Rulon Chandler.
Elder Brent H. Nielson,
Area Seventy, was over
this Committee.

Sunday, August 24, 2008 was
the  dedication
of the Twin Falls Temple.

For the great-grandchildren in our family...
Walt became a great-grandfather in
2016 when he was 81 years old,
when Taitum was born.

When Walt died at age 86 in August 2020
he had two great-grandchildren.
Taitum and Diesel.

Since his death, four more great-grandchildren have been born--
Umi; a boy; Scottie Marie;
and Maeve.

Heidi is expecting a baby girl--
due April 18, 2024.
“Ōhi’a” will be great-grandchild #7.

This will bring our posterity to 67.

We have joy in our posterity.

This is the post from April 16, 2022
when I saw our headstone for
the first time.

It had just been installed in March.

From Ruth Melling's funeral in Burley,                                      we drove to Wendell to see our headstone for the first time that was just installed the month before..

I am so thankful for our                                                  granddaughter, Aimee, designing                                                     it for us.

I am so happy to have                                                                         it in place to honor my eternal                                             sweetheart--my husband,                                                         Walter Ray Petersen.

Here's the back.

Interwoven in the vine scroll on the back

are ten things we loved in this life--

in addition to our family and friends--

that depicted our life:

Clockwise from upper right side...

  1. Small airplane – Walt was a super pilot.

  2. Typewriter – graduate of business college.                      I graduated from Henager's Business College            before working a year as an

executive secretary at First Security Bank in
Salt Lake City, then majored in business
for two years at BYU in Provo.

Heidi went in to the hospital early evening. We are waiting to hear when her baby is born...   Here's Heidi's fb post from Nov. 29, 2023, of the gender reveal for their baby:

Baby Girl coming in April! 🥰🩷

We are excited for our little family to grow to 4! And a little snippet of trying to get Umi to take a picture with the pink balloon 😅😂

ʻŌhiʻalehua Harriet Hōpoewahinelaweokekai Kaneao was born at 12:47AM PDT - April 20.

Weighing in at 7.5 lbs and 19 inches long.

Baby and mommy are tired but healthy.

Heidi was induced around 6pm at Salmon Creek Legacy Hospital {Vancouver, Washington} and was slowly progressing.

Then it all happened so fast. One minute Heidi’s water broke and the next thing we know we are pushing. The anesthesiologist worked fast to help Heidi feel as comfortable as he could.

We are happy that baby ‘Ōhi’a is here.

This afternoon I started listening to
The Bomber Mafia
 this afternoon. Fascinating!
Malcolm Gladwell - Age 45
in this 2008 photo from
Wikipedia.
Now age 60.

Family Book Club
April Choice by Gary
Book released 2021
Gary’s choice for April...

I’ve been wanting to listen to another Malcolm Gladwell book for the last little while. This is one of his recent ones from 2021:

The Bomber Mafia.

Since Oppenheimer, I've been curious about knowing more of the fire bombing of Tokyo in WW2, which was more devastating than the atomic bomb drops.  Which looks like it is discussed in this book.

It's only about 5 hours, though, so I'm also including Malcolm Gladwell podcast published as a book also from 2021:

I Hate the Ivy League.

Education is something that I've been interested in for a while, and I'm curious to hear some of Gladwell's take on it. They are both available on Audible, and are about 5 hrs each, so about 11 hours total.

 THE BOMBER MAFIA

In The Bomber Mafia, Malcolm Gladwell weaves together the stories of a Dutch genius and his homemade computer, a band of brothers in central Alabama, a British psychopath, and pyromaniacal chemists at Harvard to examine one of the greatest moral challenges in modern American history.   Most military thinkers in the years leading up to World War II saw the airplane as an afterthought. But a small band of idealistic strategists, the “Bomber Mafia,” asked: What if precision bombing could cripple the enemy and make war far less lethal?

In contrast, the bombing of Tokyo on the deadliest night of the war was the brainchild of General Curtis LeMay, whose brutal pragmatism and scorched-earth tactics in Japan cost thousands of civilian lives, but may have spared even more by averting a planned US invasion.

In The Bomber Mafia, Gladwell asks, “Was it worth it?” Things might have gone differently had LeMay’s predecessor, General Haywood Hansell, remained in charge. Hansell believed in precision bombing, but when he and Curtis LeMay squared off for a leadership handover in the jungles of Guam, LeMay emerged victorious, leading to the darkest night of World War II.

The Bomber Mafia is a riveting tale of persistence, innovation, and the incalculable wages of war.

 I HATE THE IVY LEAGUE

Malcolm Gladwell has long relished the opportunity to skewer the upper echelons of higher education, from the institution of U.S. News & World Report’s Best College rankings to the LSATs to the luxe Bowdoin College cafeteria.

I Hate the Ivy League: iffs and Rants on Elite Education, upends the traditional thinking around how education should work and tries to get to the bottom of why we often reward the wrong people. The higher education system follows a hierarchy that was created to primarily benefit top-tier, elite, well-off students, but Gladwell wants to find out how we can do a better job at educating the middle and make education more affordable, fair, and open to all.

Why is Gladwell so obsessed with American education?

The foreword and afterword of I Hate the Ivy League explains, framing this carefully curated selection of Revisionist History episodes. If you’ve never listened to Revisionist History, this collection is a thoughtful introduction to the long-running podcast, and if you’re already a fan, it allows for careful re-examination of the important issues at hand: how do we really determine what matters most when it comes to educating our children?

PUNN dinner – Sunday, April 28, 2024

 For the discussion question.

Please be thinking about this:

What are two things you would like to get better at

Please pick one that is a character attribute.

Why do you want to be better at it?

Are there others you know that exemplify that trait

How would it benefit your life if you were better at these things?

See you in 13 days… (Sent April 15)
