Monday - February 20, 2017 - Presidents' Day

We spent the day getting ready to have our Neighborhood Empty Nesters' Family Home Evening at our home.
I kept trying to get outside to take a photo of the American flag that the Boy Scouts put up, but didn't get it done.

Then Tyler came by after he had loaded the flags in our neighborhood to return to their storage building.

He was collecting the $25 yearly donation for having the flags put on our lawn for each national holiday.  We think it's the best bargain of the year and love to see the flags waving up and down the lawns in Burley on these holidays.

So I took a photo of Tyler.  Thanks, Tyler, for all the good things that you do.

Ormonds were going to bring rolls but since Roskelleys had so many left from their luncheon yesterday, they brought rolls. And Ken Fronk asked her if she would bring the homemade baked beans left.

So Ormonds brought a delicious hors d'oeuvres of
cream cheese on crackers with a chipotle raspberry jam,
which has a pleasant bite to the taste.
We had chosen to prepare the main dish of Butter Baked Chicken...a recipe from our Julie's mother-in-law,
Vicki Peterson.  Everyone loved it.
Walt welcomed our neighbors to our home and
asked Ken Fronk to give a blessing on the food.
Here are Scott, MaryAnn, Sherry, Gary, and G'lenn.
G'lenn, Ruth, Colleen, Marilyn, and David.
 Steve, Scott, MaryAnn
 Ken, Bonnie...
The menu was the butter baked chicken and gravy over rice...
Everyone is always so good at bringing all the side dishes,
which tonight were:
Gibbons and McCalls - Rice for 9
Hansens - Vegetable - Her home frozen garden corn
Ruth Melling - Vegetable - Cooked carrots
Blohams - Tossed Green Salad
Dan Black - Fresh Fruit
Fronks - Dessert - Cherry pie and ice cream
Walt helped set the table for the 18 we were planning on coming.
Roskelleys brought over two of their fold-out tables.

Gibbons let us borrow four of their folding chairs.
After everyone had filled their plates, Walt got his plate.
This I filled my plate.
Following dinner, the Rokelleys showed us slides
from their mission and told us the
rest of the story...

Here sitting in front: Walt.  Standing front row:
Sherry Ormond, Ruth Melling, Marilyn Gibbons, Gary McCall,
Colleen McCall, Bonnie Fronk, G'lenn Bloxham, Bonnie
Hansen, Ken Hansen.  Second row: Steve Ormond, Dave Gibbon,
MaryAnn Roskelley, Darrell Roskelley, Ken Fronk, Scott Bloxham.

Bonnie took a photo so I could be in it sitting by Walt.
We give a heart-felt "thank you" to Darrell and Mary Ann Roskelley for sharing their mission adventures with us
while it is still fresh on their minds.
We know it will always be in their hearts.
We know each one would have stayed and
helped do dishes, but there was only room for so many.
Fronks and Ormonds chose to get most of the dishes
washed, dried, and put away by hand.

I did convince them to load the 18 plates into
the dishwasher.
After everyone was gone, Walt showed me that
he was in such a hurry to get dressed that he
had put his shoes on the wrong feet.
Whenever we have company coming, I would never
be ready if it weren't for all his help.  He is a sweetheart!
We love our monthly gatherings with our neighbors,
who are the friends who have all raised our families
in the same neighborhood for the past 40-50 years.
It didn't matter which home our kids were in,
we knew they were safe and in good company.
And now, as empty nesters, we still enjoy all
being together.  It is a tender mercy!

Tuesday - February 21, 2017

This morning we went to the funeral of Ormand Burch.  Then we went over to our noon Institute Class.

Walt had a 2pm appointment with his ophathmologist.  He has been seeing things in a blur for a while.  He will go in a couple of weeks to Dr. Michael Taylor's office in Twin Falls where he will have the laser remove the film that has developed between the cataract implant and his eye.  Dr. Taylor said it takes about 10 seconds.

Tonight we went to the presentation by Rex Gerratt about the Flood Prevention Miracle that happened here in May of 1984.  Keith Ramsey showed an 18 minute film he made from the 4 1/2 hours of video he took during that traumatic time.

Wednesday - February 22, 2017

This morning we walked at our CSI Walking Class 11:00-12:00 Noon.  It was nice that there was no storm and the sun was shining.

We left Burley at 1:30 for the 3:00 p.m. session at the Twin Falls Temple where we rendezvous with Walt's brother, Dale, and Connie, his wife.
Connie wasn't feeling well today, so just Dale came.  When we finished and left the temple at 5:15, we went out into a big snow storm.  It looked like really big, wet flakes.

We told Dale we wouldn't stay for dinner because we didn't want to be driving in the dark in a snow storm.  We did do a quick drive through at Micky-D's where I got a "Happy Meal" because I can't go that long without eating.  It only took us 6 minutes to be back on the road.

About half-way to Burley it stopped snowing, although we could tell by the new snow along the sides of the Interstate that it had snowed.  When we pulled in at sunset, our lawn--which had been clear of snow when we left--was covered again with a couple of inches of snow.

We were relieved to be safely home.

Thursday - February 23, 2017

This morning we wondered if school had been canceled because of the blowing snow, but no when we drove by the new Burley High, there were a lot of cars, as well as a lot of cars at the Burley Branch of CSI (the old Burley High).

So we joined our walking class--which was about 24 compared to the full class of about 50.  From there, at noon we went over to Institute Class which only had 6 when class began, ending up with about 10 of the normal 25 or so.

Nancy Blauer always does a great job of teaching each lesson.  Today was on "The Redemption of the Dead," which is always interesting to learn more about.

Friday - February 24, 2017

This morning Kathleen Hedberg continued helping Walt with his Grandmother Nellie Katie Olson Petersen's line back to the 1700s.
She pulls up the original Swedish records online--which are in Swedish--handwritten.  She points out that some of the Lutheran clerks were better at penmanship than others, so their writing is much easier to read.

Later in the day we drove over to Paul to get a 25-lb box of #1 potatoes for $6 at the Idaho Potato Company.  It's always so convenient to have these nice potatoes on hand always.

Then I had a short grocery list to pick up at Smith's where I picked up my refill of thyroid medicine.  There were a lot of icy spots to walk by and through, so we always say a prayer of thank yous when we don't slip fall or become injured.

This evening we went to Joe Lambert's viewing. I had loaded some photos but they evidentally did not "save."  So now I have to load them all over again.

Saturday - February 25, 2017

Today we went to Joe Lambert's funeral.  I think all of his daughters spoke, along with his one living son.  Only one spoke longer than 5 minutes so the funeral did not go longer than 1 1/2 hours, which seeing 8 speakers, in addition to the Life Portrait, would appear to be at least 2 hours duration.

We believe all the good things that were said about Joe, and know that he was a true man of Christ.

We were excited to go to the Open Hiuse for Gary and Linda Hollinger's birthday--which they said
"Combined we are 150 years old now.
Gary - 80, Linda - 70."

It was a fun 2 hours together with lots of friends and family there.
Here are some photos I took.
Gary and Linda Hollinger --
His Dad and Mom ran The Reminder for years.
Then Gary and Linda ran it.
She told me they sold it several years ago.

Here are some of their friends -
Dick and Jan Huzinga, and Datha Cook sitting by Walt.
Some more friends...
Ro Gillette teaches the "Over 60 and Fit"
Walking Class at CSI that we are in...as
are Gary and Linda.
We loved talking with Gary's sister, Holly Hollinger Trumbull
who was here from Seattle.

Just as we were leaving, when the official
time of the open house was over, the grandkids
got Gary and Linda to come and dance with them.
They were having a great time!
You wouldn't know they are 80 and 70 years old.

Edward and Holly Hollinger Trumbull--
Gary's sister and brother-in-law from Seattle.\
He and another brother were so kind to help
Walt and me walk out to our car on the icy, slippery parking lot.
I love old-time memorabilia.
Here are fun family photos...
More photos...glimpses into the past...
Thank heavens for the man who invented cameras!
Wish I would have taken more time
to look closely at all these great photos...
I can enlarge them to see them better...
I put two views of some because the
light glared in different places.
I especially love the old-time photos...
This is like a "life story" in photos...
A treasure of magic moments...
We had our family Christmas letter
printed at the Reminder each year...
These prices seem so low...
but then so were salaries low...
I don't know if they did the Kings' Variety
Store ads for the 102 years that King's was
in business, but for most of those years
the Kings' ad brochures were printed
at The Reminder

Yes, it ws a "Happy Birthday" fun party
for Gary and Linda.
Linda told me the next week at
our walking class that a couple of her
friends told her they forgot about it.
Linda said to me: "I didn't have the heart
to tell them all the fun they had missed!"

We do wish Gary and Linda
"Happy Birthday for 80 and 70 years"

Sunday - February 26, 2017

This morning we were able to partake of the sacrament in remembrance of our Savior, Jesus Christ.  It is a sacred time to reflect on His Great Atonement for us, and to think about how we can be more Christ-like in the week ahead.

In Sacrament, the first Youth Speaker, Annalee Fluckiger talked about the Sabbath Day and how she loved the peacefulness of it.
Koby Prescott talked about how we need to multiply our talents.

Mindy Hale, our Young Women president, was asked to share her testimony.  Since she had been to a Martin-Cove-Trek planning meeting that morning for the youth, she shared how the experience she and Russell had four years ago when they were a "Ma and Pa" for a group for the Burley Idaho West Stake Trek that year.
"It is a sacred experience," she said.

Our Choir sang a beautiful song...

We share testimony that The Church of Jesus Christ is true.

Heavenly Father knows each one of us personally, by name, and loves us.

Jesus Christ, His Son, also knows each one of us by name and loves us.  Because of His Atonement, we know that every person who has ever lived on this earth will be resurrected.

Joseph Smith is the Prophet of the Restoration.

The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ.
The Bible is the testament of Jesus Christ.

Thomas S. Monson is the Living Prophet for the entire earth today.

Of this we bear testimony at the end of this Sabbath Day on February 26, 2017.
